It does kind of do a number on the verisimilitude of a bog standard JRPG Hero's Journey narrative when there is a side game you can spend as much time on as you want to no real negative effect on such. And I say this as a person that bought the game in question and has already wasted a chunk of time on Wheels.
In Final Fantasy 8 they just put the card dude in the back of the airship. Problem solved.
Final Fantasy IV the whole airship was a casino. And with 14 player characters and a party limit of 4 you know Setzer was retiring early off the house take.
