Total Eclipse (of the fart?)

I'm in the path.

What dark forces should I summon to do my bidding?

Some kind of ghoulies?

I work event support for a university that is in the path of totality.

We have like 5 simultaneous events that we're helping with tomorrow, and are supposedly expecting ~15,000 visitors or so on campus

Also there is currently a ~40% chance of thunderstorms during the early afternoon, and oh god that would be so funny

Yeah it’s a shame the path goes right thru the Ohio/West NY misery dome, where there’s a gray ceiling 3000 feet up still this time of year

I’m 2 miles south of the totality line wah wah….gonna try to sneak up the back roads into the country and hopefully avoid the traffic on 71- they’re telling people to pack a days worth of food and blankets and clothes anticipating the highway will just be blocked for the whole day due to having about 5x cars for every car’s worth of pavement

We've only got a 40% chance of clouds here last I read. But then I'm only going to get a minute and a half totality. I still hope it's clear though. I'd like to see it.

NWS forecast with t-minus 24 hours (give or take)

    s4y5ctgcn3tc1.png

My dad knows a guy who has like...a summer home condo in northern Arkansas that he's letting us stay in for just the cleaning fee. We're the only people in the building right now and if that forecast proves true we hit the bullseye. Fingers crossed.

  • ShadowfireShadowfire Vermont, in the middle of nowhereRegistered User regular
We're just south of totality and driving north in the morning. I'm worried about the traffic, mostly for getting home. But I am excited!

  • JragghenJragghen Registered User regular
Also for people keeping track, the next total is early August 2026 and passes over Reykjavik.

  • UrielUriel Registered User regular
They are saying traffic in nw Ohio is going to be absolutely insane tomorrow so I'm sucked I up on snacks now

It is 97% coverage where I am, but to hell with that I'm driving south as soon as my morning courses end in the hopes I make it to a friend's place before traffic and, more importantly, totality sets in.

FYI: if anyone here plans to photograph the event, make sure to take appropriate precautions. Without a sufficiently dark filter on your lens, you can easily damage your camera, your lens, and your eyes depending on the light path involved. Here's an article written after the last total solar eclipse in 2017:

I briefly considered the idea of including the text

Instead I settled on a ghoulies reference because they'll get you in the end

Equipment test today picked up a sunspot.

Totally did the thing like "is that dust on my sensor?" and moved my camera around. Nope, the spot stayed in the same place on the sun

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

I get to spend the afternoon driving to Chicago for work, so I'm crossing my fingers that everyone is watching the road, and not the skies.

  • ShadowfireShadowfire Vermont, in the middle of nowhereRegistered User regular
People aren't watching the road normally, today should be much more interesting.

    I never understand the fascination.

I mean I guess it's kinda neat if you happen to be in the path.

But people driving hours just so they can watch it get dim for a few minutes...

    meh.

Being under totality is a much different experience than it just gets dim for a few minutes. Seeing the corona under the total eclipse is special.

I get to walk like 8 yards to the hill across the parking lot and sit to watch it 😏

    Is it, though?

Perhaps I just have an underdeveloped sense of awe.

  • UrielUriel Registered User regular
I think of the crazy amount of cosmic coincidences that had to occur through that history of our solar system to cause the eclipse to happen like it does.

I've never seen a total myself and the last one in 17 was just a partial in my area and was still pretty impressive IMO even though it mostly just got dim.

I'm sorry that you feel that way. From the outside it just looks like you're trying to be negative about an experience people find exciting.

It's also something that is for a limited time. The moon is drifting further away and eventually totals won't happen.

We were giving away eclipse glasses for 45 seconds last week before we ran out and now people are calling every 60-90 seconds (this is not an exaggeration) to ask if we still have any and could everyone just prepare a little bit better before the next one please, jiminy christmas.

  • MagellMagell Detroit Machine Guns Fort MyersRegistered User regular
I wouldn't go out of my way to view the eclipse, but I'm definitely going outside to look at it.

It seems like it's a little of that, but it could also be what they said: they don't have much of a sense of awe or wonder. The Grand Canyon is just a hole in the ground, the pyramids are just piles of rock, an emotional cinematic masterpiece is just a film, etc. Maybe it's not their fault and it's just how they are, maybe they're unconsciously contrarian, etc. I wouldn't immediately chalk it up to them being a Negative Nancy getting their jollies from shitting on our excitement, but it could just be genuine confusion as to what the big deal is (though the end result is the same, with them raining on our parade)

I imagine everyone has something that everyone else finds really remarkable and special that just doesn't do anything for them, but it's important when you're that person not to poo-poo other people's joy or try and make people explain/justify why it matters to them. just accept that not everything is gonna affect people the same way and let people do their thing without trying to minimize or dismiss it (something I've had to learn from personal experience of coming off like a big butthead)

The path of totality ends halfway through my city. So the south half gets a full eclipse, but the north half will only get a partial eclipse. Close enough to be considered a full eclipse, but still technically a partial.

Actually, upon further research, I am two-three blocks away from the totality line.

Warby Parker set up an automated thing on their phone lines just for that. I was going to see if they had any pairs left (lolnope), but I'll be doing the thing with a strainer instead. We're only getting 35% or so coverage in this part of California.
