Spectrum still refuses to explain why they can't get internet back up so I tried getting AT&T fiber and the soonest date they can have a tech come out is November 8th. I guess so many people are trying to jump ship so they can get back to work and shit overloaded their capabilities.

So I guess I'm just fucked both ways. I can at least keep working out of the meadery on my WFH days but dang man. Like, I get it. Hurricane. Devastation. But between Duke and Spectrum it's like the Olympics of vague and useless messaging around here.

This is perhaps a bit beyond petty complaint but my neighbor across the street's house caught on fire and burned down just now. Pretty sure they made it out ok at least but there are like a dozen fire trucks on the road between us.

I had woken up and rolled over and got all comfy and warm under the covers and then my fuckin alarm went off for work. Uggghhhhhh, I really don't want to go in today. Not for any particular reason, I just don't want to go. Taking nearly all of last month off wasn't enough

I've been calling the plumbers the last two days trying to set up their return to replace the shower hardware but to no avail. I was getting depressed about it, but then they just texted me. Apparently they've been having phone issues and it wasn't recording the voice mails. Anyway I now have an appointment for Tuesday morning. Cons: I have to wait more days. Pros: That is pay day so it'll help when I inevitably have to give them all my money. I also had to put in for a absence on that day but I got like 90+ sick days banked.

Was in the lottery for a room for magfest, got 1877 out of like 16k in line but all affiliated hotels were booked before my number came up, which is very annoying

We only live like 40 minutes away but I was hoping for a room so we could really stay at out and have more fun this time

My cat, who is 18 years old, has always been a bit difficult with litter boxes. She won't adjust her body to pee downwards so we have to have high wall boxes. Since she's pretty old, she can't do top entry ones anymore, even with steps. So we've been through several different boxes in the past year to find one that works. Currently we have an enclosed front-entry one that we thought would work great. But we discovered that she always poops at the back, which means she pees at the front, and even through she tries to pee in the corner, she often misses and just projectile pisses right out the front door. So we've got to find some kind of tray to put in front of it that she also won't step in and track peeprints on the carpet.

We have a wobbly girl from an intense fever when she was a kitten and she also has difficulties with litter boxes. I have seen various suggestions but i basically just made an extra long box. She still has accidents outside of the box sadly but i can't really think of anything else to do. In addition to the wobbles i think she also lost some brain cells during the fever because she has a confused look on her face at pretty much all times. Like even when trying to get a drink of water she seems perplexed.

My parents' cat is only 8 and technically doesn't have anything wrong with her according to the vet, but is built like she's made out of spare parts and is just not very good at being a cat, and she misses in the litterbox all the time. Just poops straight over the edge, then goes through the burying motions even though there's nothing to bury. It's not my house though so it's quite funny.

so I had to get a new psychiatrist, and they have different rules about meds and how they prescribe them, so I have to go off two and it sucks.

it's not the worst withdrawal I've had, but those I could at least just curl up and try to sleep through. I take care of a toddler now, I have to be active and present and shit.

I've sweated through the last few nights and have been having kafka dreams.

I got an extra large litter box when Dinner was having hip trouble which helped a lot, because both he and Levy did the same thing where they pooped at the back and peed at the front. Having the extra room made it easier for him to position himself comfortably. Though it didn't entirely eliminate the issue.

They have you tapering off or just quit outright? My wife had a hell of a time getting off certain psych meds even with miniscule dose reductions over a period of months.

Psych meds suck so much. Here you go, try this new med, it takes 4 to 6 weeks before we find out for sure if it works and if the side effects will go away, or maybe pop up. Didn't work? Ok, in another 2 to 3 weeks, after you taper off that med, we can try another med that will maybe take 4 to 6 weeks to start working.

The taco shop next to the meadery lost power during the hurricane and instead of opening back up they just said fuck it and closed because it was more expensive trying to keep it running than just shutting the doors.

So this place is down another business. There's only the coffee shop, the Georgian restaurant, us (until next month) and an escape room. They're building a suite out to be some kind of GameShow simulator.

This place is fuckin donion rings. It's been kind of wild watching a once thriving business location die in real time.

It turns out poking a business with a stick and going "make money" isn't actually a viable form of property management and you gotta like, keep things clean and invest in repairs and upgrades.

This groundbreaking information could absolutely change the business world as we know it.

it is extremely depressing how many places this is true for over the last decade. obviously covid was a massive blow, but even before that it feels like places all over the US that should have enough population of people with disposable income to keep things at least steady if not growing wildly, have been just...slowly turning to dust

another decade and we're gonna be a country of abandoned social business centers and miles of gas stations and aging fast food joints

sure, these places had the population numbers but a staggering amount of those people hadn't had a raise in over a decade .... unlike the prices for literally everything

Its kind of already happening here. Our downtown is not quite rapidly but faster than it should be emptying of all the local businesses that started the place and are being filled with chains. They're the only ones that can pay to play anymore.

This market is tough. Inflation has absolutely made people way pickier about where and when they spend their money. With the skyrocketing costs of rent (which is really the biggest overhead cost that's killing people right now) if you aren't in an area with heavy foot traffic or don't have a solid, dedicated customer base you're gonna be struggling.

  • HoukHouk Nipples The EchidnaRegistered User regular
oh yeah I mean the reasons for it - increasing rent and supply costs for businesses, dwindling disposable income even for young working professionals, usually your ideal demographic, the world generally existing as it is - are pretty evident

just sad sad stuff all around

Jugs and I live in a city that is also being particularly inundated with out of state people looking for a nice city to live in. Somehow it made a few best places to live in lists, i think US News put us at 4th, and the city/county is not using the extra tax money on fucking infrastructure. So in addition to prices going up, gentrification is rapidly getting out of hand, and traffic gets worse by the day. Maybe the weather will take a turn for the worse due to climate change and some of these people will leave...

Fun fact: you can just pay to get on those Best Of lists.

My petty complaint is the damn Hurricane killed power in the townhouse at 10pm as it crossing by. And I didn't get my power back on till around 8pm today!

p.s. I use a cpap machine so I didn't sleep last night except the few minutes or so I fell asleep till I choked awake.

p.p.s - My elite controller LB broke, so I bought a replacement. I followed the video on how to remove the broken, then when putting it back together, the part I NEEDED help with they couldn't do it themselves and quit filming. I put it all together and of course I screwed it up while trying to hold the pairing button and clipping the bar over the Xbox button, so both buttons no longer work and I'm too discouraged to rip it all apart again today.

My parents are coming into to town to visit for a week. By 'visit' I mean they will sit in their RV park while we work and the kids are in school, and not want to do anything during the free time we have other than to flaunt their wealth and be judgmental about pretty much everything.
