It feels like we've been waiting for a [Dragon Age]

[Did the previous thread disappear? I searched all over but could only find the closed one from 2 years ago, and I was sure there was a more recent one. If there is, sorry!]

So we're closing in on 10 years (oh god) since the last Dragon Age (Inquisition) was released -- 9 years since the last real piece of content (Trespasser). But it looks like DA4 is finally headed our way!

The game will reportedly be out by March 2025, quite possibly before the end of 2024.

Oh also, it's not called Dragon Age: Dreadwolf now, it's been retitled to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
cyifcqd8f6pz.jpg

There are definitely mixed reactions to this change, but here's the reasoning given by BioWare General Manager Gary McKay:
Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience.
Considering that companion stuff -- especially interactions between them and events where the whole group gets together (Citadel!) -- has always been one of the most popular aspects of BioWare's game, leaning into that could be a good thing. We'll see!

Speaking of companions, other details from McKay include:
  • The game features 7 companions. I'm slightly disappointed by the number, but when you think about it, it's fairly in line with most of the other DA and ME games (except ME2), especially when you take into account DLC additions, mutually exclusive characters, late-game additions, and Dog. I wouldn't be upset if there end up being secret or DLC characters, though.
  • In a notable change, it sounds like the number of party members has been reduced from Player+3 down to Player+2. Personally, I'm fine with it in Mass Effect and I expect I'll be fine with it here. I've seen some people complain about not getting any 3-person banter but like...that almost never happened anyway. Obviously there are also tactical considerations.
  • According to McKay:
We’ve worked throughout development to create really incredible backstories for each companion that intersect with the main narrative in meaningful ways.
Oh also, there's (finally) going to be a 15-minute gameplay reveal on the DA YouTube channel this Tuesday, June 11th.

There are more details in the linked IGN article.

Who's ready to age some dragons?!

EDIT: Here's the reveal trailer!
And the gameplay reveal!

I literally cannot believe it's coming out this year.

    That is wild.

I dont have time for another RPG this fall!

But I'm excited. Baby gryphon friend!

This year was already stacked out of control for me I'm amazed that even more is getting added.

Even though I'd prefer DA to be a top down rpg, Pillars of Eternity in the DA setting essentially, and lean more towards DA1 gameplay I know it's not gonna happen so I'm kinda happy with this ironically. Inquisition tried to please everyone and ended up with pretty bland gameplay imo. If you want DA to be a 3rd person action whatever then lean into it and make it good at least. If they manage to pull off a fantasy Mass Effect it'll be great.

Obviously we can't read too much into a trailer but that combo of the purple, the logo shape at the end, and the faceless nameless boss can only mean one thing.

    Saint's Row 5 confirmed.

I feel sad. Dark Fantasy can get annoying and stupid fast with how edgy people will try and be, I laugh and laugh at that original Dragon Age Origins trailer with the screaming emo metal, but that was the Dragon Age world. Even Inquisition knew this in between magic spas. Changing the name to Veilguard instead of the more ominous Dreadwolf also furthers this attempt to be lighter. Trying to lighten it up with this new art style and the feeling of D&D bandits just felt off. Nothing about the game or Bioware in general makes me feel like this is going to be good. It also took me a good while to realize that's Harding from DAI, it's like they had to dwarf her 30% more and also removed her cheek scar.

I want Bioware to break out of the self imposed funk they've been in, I just don't see this is it.

    Color me whelmed

It’s been 5 years since BioWare released a new game and 10 years they released a good game. It’s gonna take a lot more than the most generic possible trailer to get me excited.

The trailer fails to show anything about the game—just randos fighting randos sprinkled with punctuation quips. What’s the story? Who are these people? Why are they fighting? What should we care?

If you look at the early trailers for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, cringe though they be, they gave some indication what the games were. The Veilguard trailer feels like a bad mashup.

While I hope BioWare gets back to making classic games, I think this is going to be another episode of Wha Happened.

Man, considering this game burned through a bunch of creative directors (and who knows who else), plus has had a rather troubled development and seemingly no clear vision the trailer has not inspired confidence in me.

I still watch these every now and then just because they're awesome. Why is Shepard trying to do a leaping dab onto that Brute? Because of that quality epic crescendo that's way better than some shitty cover of Bowie's Heroes, that's why!

I saw it in the trailer comments or on twitter, Dragon Age: Veilguardians of the Galaxy and that made me laugh and then sadly sigh in truth.

Screenshots on the store page look pretty great though they're mostly buildings and walls: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1845910/Dragon_Age_The_Veilguard/

The trailer shows pretty much nothing (it's three teasers in a trench coat really) and has weird upbeat Big Game hype energy.

Don't really care about the name change. It's not like Origins and Inquisition are all that ominous and Solas isn't the only antagonist, prolly not even the biggest one.

Guess we'll know when the gameplay video comes out on June 11th.

Feels tonally inconsistent with the other entries. The art style seems more cartoonish.

Actually kinda looks a little like Fortnite to me.

I thought the next Dragon Age entry was supposed to be Dread Wolf?

    Well that kinda sucks.

I've never been one to closely follow the goings-on behind doors with game development.

But I realized way back when Diablo 3 first came out that games are made by people, not companies.

And people come and go, but the company... well, the company just keeps beating on IPs until money stops falling out.

Dreadwolf was a great title. It flows off the tongue, stands out from the crowd, and alludes to past games without continuity lockout. Why ditch in favor of something as generic as “The Veilguard?”

We definitely need to see gameplay and a story trailer before I'll be excited about this. I get that this trailer was intended to just introduce the characters, but doing that in this barebones way where we see their personal title and watch them gank a dude in a generic fantasy action scene is not enough. I'd like to see more dialogue from them and a bit more about how they fit into the story. This was just...meh.

    Ok so the trailer:

The art style absolutely threw me a bit. I was genuinely not expecting the...almost Disney-esque characters. It's not necessarily bad in and of itself but it's definitely a thing. There seems to be some debate about whether the game itself will actually look like that (although the trailer does say it's in-engine) so I guess we'll see when the gameplay trailer drops.

I don't know that I'm crazy about the style, but I do know that I'm old enough to remember the response that DA2 got, before and after release, and the huge amount of (sometimes terrible) commentary about its shift in art design. I dunno, we'll see.

Also, this trailer definitely doesn't seem to really reveal much other than a tiny glimpse at presumably a few of the companions. But hey, it DID give off those heist vibes that they talked about way back, which IIRC a lot of people were interested in.

Yeah, this game's long and oft-rebooted development plus the turnover and layoff massacres at Bioware over the past few years make it hard to get very excited. Veilguard is definitely a vastly more forgettable name than Dreadwolf, but if this game is still set in Tevinter then at least that would be interesting. Trailer is mildly interesting but it doesn't say much and Bioware is a shadow of its former self...I hope this is the game that brings them back in form but I'll wait and see.

The art style is the one thing I felt looked strong. I mean it’s kind of all there is to the trailer. But I was never really a fan of inquisitions look, it didn’t have any personality. I’m not saying cartoony is the solution, but I would say calling it Disney like is a bit much. I think it’s a strong look, but I get people loved the original game and wanted something more like the witcher.

I think it matters more how it ultimately coheres in game, like how animations and cutscenes and dialogue scenes are framed and handled, that matters more than static cartoon v realistic arguments for me

Aside from that I liked the tone of the trailer and it is ultimately a teaser meant to get as many people interested as possible, so it was unlikely to be something more self serious and fan-centered

But they really did need to show gameplay at this stage, it’s like come on

I mean I loved the recent dungeons and dragons movie, and baldurs gate maybe ate their lunch tone wise anyway. Gameplay is June 11 so we’ll see how it looks soon enough

I think teasers are often not super reflective of the totality of like 50 hour games tho. It all just depends on how the broader project comes together, more than what they thought would sell the game to the widest audience

i think its a terrible trailer for what will probably be a middling but enjoyable once through game

not sure if much more than that was ever on the cards given the development history of this game sadly but i'll give it a chance

I got from the trailer that youre organising a team of dudes for an adventure. For me that’s kind of all a general audience teaser needs to be. I’m waiting until I actually see it playing on June 11 before I come down hard on it. Plenty of great games have come out of rough developments and vice versa.

There's a part of me that's forever going to be a little confused that Varric apparently became the central linking figure of the Dragon Age series. Like, he's a fine character, but not who I would have guessed to be that important.

Isn’t he a sort of bard or storyteller framing device in 2? People liked him and he’s jovial and that kind of narrator position probably cemented it. It’s not like the original dragon age was packed full of characters that could’ve become the face of the series
