So we're closing in on 10 years (oh god) since the last Dragon Age (Inquisition) was released -- 9 years since the last real piece of content (Trespasser). But it looks like DA4 is finally headed our way!
The game will reportedly be out by March 2025,
quite possibly before the end of 2024.
Oh also, it's not called Dragon Age: Dreadwolf now,
it's been retitled to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
There are definitely mixed reactions to this change, but here's the reasoning given by BioWare General Manager Gary McKay:
Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience.
Considering that companion stuff -- especially interactions between them and events where the whole group gets together (Citadel!) -- has always been one of the most popular aspects of BioWare's game, leaning into that could be a good thing. We'll see!
Speaking of companions, other details from McKay include:
- The game features 7 companions. I'm slightly disappointed by the number, but when you think about it, it's fairly in line with most of the other DA and ME games (except ME2), especially when you take into account DLC additions, mutually exclusive characters, late-game additions, and Dog. I wouldn't be upset if there end up being secret or DLC characters, though.
- In a notable change, it sounds like the number of party members has been reduced from Player+3 down to Player+2. Personally, I'm fine with it in Mass Effect and I expect I'll be fine with it here. I've seen some people complain about not getting any 3-person banter but like...that almost never happened anyway. Obviously there are also tactical considerations.
- According to McKay:
We’ve worked throughout development to create really incredible backstories for each companion that intersect with the main narrative in meaningful ways.
Oh also, there's (finally) going to be a 15-minute gameplay reveal on the DA YouTube channel this Tuesday, June 11th.
There are more details in the linked IGN article.
Who's ready to age some dragons?!
EDIT: Here's the reveal trailer!
And the gameplay reveal!

I don't have a strong opinion either way mostly interested in the gameplay trailer.
That's like my favorite part of any game.

I want Bioware to break out of the self imposed funk they've been in, I just don't see this is it.
It’s been 5 years since BioWare released a new game and 10 years they released a good game. It’s gonna take a lot more than the most generic possible trailer to get me excited.
The trailer fails to show anything about the game—just randos fighting randos sprinkled with punctuation quips. What’s the story? Who are these people? Why are they fighting? What should we care?
If you look at the early trailers for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, cringe though they be, they gave some indication what the games were. The Veilguard trailer feels like a bad mashup.
While I hope BioWare gets back to making classic games, I think this is going to be another episode of Wha Happened.
Man, considering this game burned through a bunch of creative directors (and who knows who else), plus has had a rather troubled development and seemingly no clear vision the trailer has not inspired confidence in me.

I still watch these every now and then just because they're awesome. Why is Shepard trying to do a leaping dab onto that Brute? Because of that quality epic crescendo that's way better than some shitty cover of Bowie's Heroes, that's why!
I saw it in the trailer comments or on twitter, Dragon Age: Veilguardians of the Galaxy and that made me laugh and then sadly sigh in truth.

EA, not even once.
The trailer shows pretty much nothing (it's three teasers in a trench coat really) and has weird upbeat Big Game hype energy.
Don't really care about the name change. It's not like Origins and Inquisition are all that ominous and Solas isn't the only antagonist, prolly not even the biggest one.
Guess we'll know when the gameplay video comes out on June 11th.
Actually kinda looks a little like Fortnite to me.
I thought the next Dragon Age entry was supposed to be Dread Wolf?
Those shots look better than the trailer at least.
I've never been one to closely follow the goings-on behind doors with game development.
But I realized way back when Diablo 3 first came out that games are made by people, not companies.
And people come and go, but the company... well, the company just keeps beating on IPs until money stops falling out.
...Oh.
Well, I guess Larian Studios is still around for my RPG fix.
E: The Steam page screenshots are nice at least, but the trailer says a lot more than some nice landscapes do.

The art style absolutely threw me a bit. I was genuinely not expecting the...almost Disney-esque characters. It's not necessarily bad in and of itself but it's definitely a thing. There seems to be some debate about whether the game itself will actually look like that (although the trailer does say it's in-engine) so I guess we'll see when the gameplay trailer drops.
I don't know that I'm crazy about the style, but I do know that I'm old enough to remember the response that DA2 got, before and after release, and the huge amount of (sometimes terrible) commentary about its shift in art design. I dunno, we'll see.
Also, this trailer definitely doesn't seem to really reveal much other than a tiny glimpse at presumably a few of the companions. But hey, it DID give off those heist vibes that they talked about way back, which IIRC a lot of people were interested in.
I think it matters more how it ultimately coheres in game, like how animations and cutscenes and dialogue scenes are framed and handled, that matters more than static cartoon v realistic arguments for me
Aside from that I liked the tone of the trailer and it is ultimately a teaser meant to get as many people interested as possible, so it was unlikely to be something more self serious and fan-centered
But they really did need to show gameplay at this stage, it’s like come on
I think teasers are often not super reflective of the totality of like 50 hour games tho. It all just depends on how the broader project comes together, more than what they thought would sell the game to the widest audience
not sure if much more than that was ever on the cards given the development history of this game sadly but i'll give it a chance
