It feels like we've been waiting for a [Dragon Age]
That boggles my mind that it's even a reason. Why wouldn't you want a trailer that tells non-fans what kind of game it actually is? What does introducing people these characters that they have no idea about actually do for non-fans? The Mass Effect 2 trailer was perfect at combining what kind of game it was and also showing you flashy moves.
Almost any cinematic trailer ever wouldn't tell you what kind of a game something was unless you already knew.
And they happen all the time. Gets people interested in a vibe.
The vibe from the trailer and the gameplay are completely different too lol.
Both felt appropriately Dragon Age
DA2 and Inquisition both had plenty of more lighthearted moments along the line of the trailer, along with an overall dark vibe. Origins was the only one that didn’t fit that feel.
If you didn't fucking know that DA was an RPG you would assume from the trailer that it was going to be a fucking hero looter shooter game. Or maybe a mobile game with roguelike features!
Hard for either of us to say what we would assume as we both know that it IS an rpg, so why worry about it?
Regardless, I wasn’t thrilled by the trailer either, but I wasn’t worried about the game based on it, and the gameplay video reaffirms my feelings
several of my off-forum Dragon Age Fan friends seem to be pretty on board with this one after the actual gameplay previews and such started getting shown today, definitely seemed like a weird direction for the initial cinematic trailer but it sounds like there's good stuff there actually.
I just really hope they don't try to make Scout Harding a badass because the thing that made her super cool was that she was just a normal person.
But she was a badass though.
We never saw her in action but felt pretty clear she was a trained combatant/archer.
Yeah, but like in a "consummate professional" sort of way. Like "I'm as weirded out by all this magic crap as everyone else, but fortunately we've got adventurers to deal with that. Meanwhile I've got reports to fill out and soldiers to feed."
Bioware parties usually have at least one "level headed professional with their feet on the ground" character to balance all the weirdos, so Harding fits that nicely.

I haven't really thought about anything Dragon Age since finishing Inquisition 10-freaking-years-ago, and I still was taken aback by these trailers. The reveal was dumb as hell and looks like the mobile game garbage ads I'm used to seeing when I watch broadcast TV, but even the much better gameplay footage shows a pretty massive departure from the previous franchise installments.
I don't really care because I wrote off BioWare as a husk of itself a very long time ago, but I definitely understand fans of the series (what's left of them that is) looking at where it went and scratching their heads.
I get not liking the trailer, but like... Who cares? It's just a trailer. It has already served its purpose and it's over now. I don't see why we should spend any emotional energy on this. At least when we're arguing about gameplay, that's something that does matter once the game is out.

I dunno, as a fan of the series I think this game looks great based on what they've shown so far.
The trailer was fine, not going to win any awards. It might have fit better for a secondary ‘meet the team’ trailer, but the hostility I’ve seen from people seems overblown.
I was whatever about the visuals but I mean "Let's assemble a team of badasses to take down this world-ending threat" is pretty Bioware and I actually liked how they were able to show off each characters personality with limited time.

Am I the only person who thought the reveal trailer and the gameplay reveal were pretty tonally and visually consistent?
If you'd asked me to guess the colour motif for the latest Dragon Age game, neon purple would not have been my guess. Kinda Gotham Knights-y vibes.
Gameplay looks... interesting. I'd like to see more. It was completely linear, which I get happens a lot in big set-piece moments, but I'd like to see some open-world action.
Also I was doing chores while watching so I might have missed it, but was any companion-control shown? I couldn't see them doing much.
And no, for me at least they were completely different visual styles. I would expect Tevinter to be more colorful, etc. But the overall tone was super Pixar'ish in the first one. Almost comedic. Which while DA has always had humor, its never been cartoonish.
theres 2 sides to gameplay; gameplay (boring) and sliders (the real shit)
You can play as a husky fellow!
Huzzah! Hopefully theres a day when that becomes a regular feature. Sometimes I don't want to play someone who looks like he was sculpted by the gods themselves.
I’m digging the creation news—all the updates are things I wanted for Mass Effect: Andromeda. Do we know if the game will have different VA options like Inquisition?
As for gameplay, hopefully we get to see high-level combat soon. It’s already won a lot of points for bringing back more in-depth companion control.
So they’re going for a more linear mission-style format? Getting the impression everything is kind of streamlined and railroaded, which makes me sad. Kind of got ME:Andromeda vibes from the gameplay trailer with how linear and annoyingly quippy the dialogue tried to be.
I guess I’ll always be confused why after DA3 was this massive commercial and critical success that BioWare tried to redesign the franchise for a decade instead of just making DA4.

Eh, it felt like standard BioWare tutorial vibes to me. Very similar to Inquisition's into area.

I like the visual style for the new game it's basically all the fun shit from 2's style that Inquisition somehow lost. And I'm happy they kind of finally just picked a combat style in this game instead of this kind of weird hacky mixture of them wanting to make a CRPG but also an Action RPG. 2 was kind of busted and Inquisition was a huge snore fest with Origins knowing exactly what it was from the get go.

Well this got me to reinstall Inquisition so I can finally finish that.
Get your Central Perk ass out of Thedas. Could have at least mimicked a classier place like Monk's Cafe.
I had to google to remember what Central Perk looked like, and I don't know if you're going off memory but this doesn't look very similar.

2 was basically Bethany casting haste on my 2-handed Reaver who would then proceed to demolish everything so I was already playing it like an action RPG.
Gameplay trailer looks good, though I'm not getting people saying it looks more like an action RPG because the combat just looks...like Inquisition, including having to spam the same move way too many times on basic enemies. Obviously can't tell that much from 10 minutes of combat, but I'm really hoping enemies aren't as health-spongey as they felt in DA:I.
I just hope you can still change their gear. My biggest issue with Andromeda was not being able to change companion gear at all. Get a cool new weapon that would help the AI actually hit something? Sorry, no can do, now if you'll excuse me I'll be over here with no hope of being able to hit the broadside of a barn.

Gameplay video was solid. The vaguely cartoony look present in the cast trailer and that group lounge shot was nowhere to be seen here, so maybe it's a lighting thing?
That said, I'm gonna need to get used to Varric's new look. Not the art, just that he looks older. And has more facial hair, and his hair is darker.
My initial impression of the combat is that they took a step back towards DA2? Which I don't mean in a bad way. Anytime this made me think of DA2 made me happy. I know some have the opposite response.
I've heard a lot of complaints from people who don't like the conversation wheel, because it doesn't tell us exactly what Rook will say. While I understand their frustration, I'm wracking my brain to have a voiced Rook without the conversation wheel.
(I enjoy the wheel, with only FO4 fumbling it)
oh god is it 2010 again, please don't give me flashbacks to the bioware forums

The """"""""fans""""""" have been shitting all over pretty every game from SGF about DEI and SBI....Monster Hunter Wilds, Perfect Dark, AC Shadows, Dragon Age, Fable, South of Midnight, Diablo 4 expansion....These people are tiring.
I don't give a flying fuck about any of that. Diversity is awesome. Inclusion is awesome.
Goofy Pixar art in my dark fantasy series isn't.
Have dudes make out with fucking unicorns on a transgender crocodile as long as the look and tone is series consistent. That trailer isn't.
Like at all.
Dragon Age is supposed to be dark fantasy? I must not have noticed, though I did only play Origins and Inquisition, maybe 2 was dark. It's always seemed like regular high fantasy to me, some parts are dark, some parts are goofy.
There is active dodging and parrying in the game now, which were not in Inquisition. You also only really control Rook, with other party members chiming in with abilities ala Mass Effect - you no longer pause the game, control Sera and use abilities etc. Bear in mind that DA2 and DA:I were already mostly action games as they were, so this isn't the huge leap into unknown territory - it's just the completely 100% logical end point.
Parry and Dodge were in Inquisition. They were Rogue abilities, and the character in this gameplay demo was a Rogue. Its just a continuation of what the class already did.

What kind of games are these? What do they even look like?
We as people in the know probably glaze over this more often than we think. We fill in the blanks because we know what they are.
This is how most cinematic game trailers are.

Now I'm thinking of doing another playthrough of the first three. Time to dust off Origin (the EA launcher), if it even still exists.
Oh shit!
Exactly what I was hoping on the other page!
Character creator sounds robust.
Kind of disappointed the combat seems so similar to Inquisition though which was one of the weaker parts of the game.
I dunno, as a fan of the series I think this game looks great based on what they've shown so far.

Seems like more Inquisition which is okay but I was hoping combat would look more interesting this time around, doesn't seem to be the case so far.
