[Monster Hunter] Wilds coming 2/28/25 - Open Beta is over (Sad Palico meow)
Posts
I actually didn't like MH Language much in World, so I got used to having them speak in Japanese. The Palico voice though, that one is definitely going off. A Palico's crazy excitability does not translate well to actual voice acting.
That's what, 4 different monsters available in the beta? Whatever you were fighting, the one that jumped into the turf war, the one that the left the area and the one that showed up? Rey Dau, Doshaguma, Balahara, and Characabra respectively, I think?
Capcom needs to get their heads out of their ass and allow for even more customization on Palico. I want Palicos looks like my cats and have different attitudes , I want one that is aloof not just Uber genki bullshit all the time. It’s cats for effs sake . The internet loves cats lean on that shit
I’ve also been trolling comments and videos and it’s striking that I have not seen a single negative post on how any weapon plays/feels yet. Capcom seems to have done a bang up job!
even when buffed up, the damage doesnt seem to be on par with other weapons
also, the beta only has the slowest of kinsects so thats no bueno

I don't understand how this is what water looks like in Wilds now:

Once again, fingers crossed this is just a really old build. But...
Edit: I guess the video is not very clear, but in World, the water moves with your weapon, e.g. you make a slash, you will create a wave. In Wilds, it's just an alpha texture. I'll upload a World vid to compare.
Edit 2:

It's quite jarring to go back to World and see it run at a higher resolution and 60fps :P
OK but my palico drives a little mech and it's paws hang out of it. I can forgive many sins for this

Low rank monsters are always boring if you're already a MH vet. It's what I felt with Rise until I reached late HR.
How'd you get it? I'm still not seeing it in the store nevermind, I had to search the full "Monster Hunter Wilds Beta Test"
Putting this here mostly for my own reference. It does seem like he is promoting a much more balanced playstyle, so that is a good contrast to my earlier post.
Going to need to watch this on repeat for the next few hours though; lots of muscle memory to unlearn!
Edit: I found a video showing both counters. Holy shit man. I thought Lance was defensive?? Switch Axe here I come...
Yes! I tried them out both yesterday and they're not OP. The axe mode one is more powerful but more difficult to pull off since it has a somewhat long wind-up and small counter window, while the sword one is quick with a generous counter window. The axe one is the flashier of the two, it seems to have an added stagger bonus because the times I was able to pull it off, it would send the monster reeling back. It is really cool.

Quick correction: The axe mode counter is not a counter, but an "Offset attack"!

getting about 50-60 FPS without frame gen at high settings which is not amazing, i'll be honest, but probably acceptable enough if i can tweak settings (or heaven forbid, they optimize the game more prior to release) to hit a locked a 60. still, oof

Got a consistent 60fps without tweaking any graphics setting.
Played through all available monsters with long sword. Digging the added moves.
Will probably try switchaxe or gunlance next.
Some of loading screens when joining multiplayer through quest board were kind of brutal.
Anyways, yes new chainsaw moves are awesome and I think I’ve figured out how to actually do them somewhat consistently. Still need to work on how to get to a real saed, but most of my combos seem to be working pretty well.
Edit
Also for those who didn’t realize like me early on, they actually give you four sets of armor you can swap in camp. Nothing spectacular at this level of course, but nice to have options and you even have set bonuses available!
New stuff of note:
Can hold RT to charge spirit combo moves/spirit gauge. Longer you hold it the later the attack it releases, hits Roundslash before long. Useful.
Red is now it's own whole thing. Basic combo changes. Roundslash can combo into Crimson Combo, and there's a second roundslash you can do after the first. Gauge drains faster, foresight slash becomes a new version... It's cool, but maintaining it's going to suck.
Helm Breaker got a followup attack that spends a second level of spirit.
The upgraded foresight slash isn't any better than the old one (still a very small window etc), and whiffing it destroys your precious red gauge so... yeah. High risk low reward as ever, do not use.
...I miss Sacred Sheathe from Sunbreak already, so I'm probably not playing LS this game.

I'm running it smooth in potato-ish graphics on my own 2060. I was worried it would not let you lower settings enough to not kill my poor old GPU, but no, deactivating a bunch of the niceties and setting DLSS to balanced I'm getting smooth framerate. Sure sometimes people look like they're out of a PS3 game but I started playing game with the NES, I'm not scared of the occasional pixel!
But yeah, I ran two hunts and called it a day. All I wanted was to know was whether it ran playably, because if I can run it I will play this game full stop.
EDIT: Okay, further testing tells me I can reduce the potatoness significantly and still get a stable 45 fps, so that's great, cause I'm generally bothered by frame drops more than low stable frames, I'd much rather run at 45 stable than 60 but it dips to 40 at random. That said, I showed the usage stats in MSI afterburner while doing the testing and man this is absolutely a game that goes "you paid for the CPU so I'm going to use the whole CPU". Sure my processor is oldish, it's a Ryzen 7 3800X, but this thing was absolutely using all the cores, all the 16 threads were running and some were hitting over 80% usage.
Thousand Dragons is a spread Dragon Piercer basically, and definitely needs a tracer active. Coatings are applied in sets of 8, but you have infinite stock (it's a meter that you use for both coatings and tracers that refills as you charge shots). Infinite power coatings is huge.
Also, there's a leaping spread shot off the charging evade that I'm fairly sure is new as well? And of course, that's predictably useful with tracers to make all the arrows smack them in the face.

Press d-pad up to turn off the self-driving mode. There's a toggle in the options to have it not go automatically into self-drive mode too.
The game runs better than I expected, but it still doesn't run as well as I'd like. 5800x + 3070Ti, with almost everything in high and a few things in medium, 1440p with DLSS set to performance and I'm getting around 40-45fps when in an open area with multiple monsters.
Since the demo has some bugs that were also present in the Gamescom Germany demo, I'm going to assume it's a very similar preview build that isn't optimized. I'm just happy we don't have any stutter, that thing has been plaguing so many new games lately.
