We still don't know, so here's hoping.

I actually didn't like MH Language much in World, so I got used to having them speak in Japanese. The Palico voice though, that one is definitely going off. A Palico's crazy excitability does not translate well to actual voice acting.

That's what, 4 different monsters available in the beta? Whatever you were fighting, the one that jumped into the turf war, the one that the left the area and the one that showed up? Rey Dau, Doshaguma, Balahara, and Characabra respectively, I think?

  • SatsumomoSatsumomo Rated PG! Registered User regular
Yup! This is pretty much exactly the same as the Gamescom demos, with a singleplayer story mission and then a free-roam where you can fight these 4 monsters. In the Gamescom demo you couldn't fight Rey except by random encounter, but here, you can actually select him from the quest list.

Capcom needs to get their heads out of their ass and allow for even more customization on Palico. As a charge blade main in world, this video has me super hyped

I’ve also been trolling comments and videos and it’s striking that I have not seen a single negative post on how any weapon plays/feels yet. Capcom seems to have done a bang up job!

One of the things that I vividly remember when playing World for the first time, was just the amount of detail in everything, but one particular thing that stood out to me was how the water would react to your and the monster's moves, making for incredibly cinematic moments.

I don't understand how this is what water looks like in Wilds now:

    https://youtu.be/JjFqtgQzNK8?si=vm2uNxVQNQR1j3Ev

Once again, fingers crossed this is just a really old build. But... :/

Edit: I guess the video is not very clear, but in World, the water moves with your weapon, e.g. you make a slash, you will create a wave. In Wilds, it's just an alpha texture. I'll upload a World vid to compare.

    Edit 2:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLC4GQodN8g

It's quite jarring to go back to World and see it run at a higher resolution and 60fps :P

I take it back, as more charge blade speed run videos are coming out, I am seeing complaints that they made the chainsaw moves too strong and that there is no reason to switch to shield mode. I can kind of see this, as the speedrunners are now able to stay in axe mode constantly since the chainsaw doesn't burn through your phials which is definitely a big change. I do agree that this is a negative change as I really enjoy the giant SAED explosions, however I'm not super concerned because 1) I assume that endgame gear will have abilities that buff the saed and what we're seeing now is a narrow meta based on early gear, 2) speedrunners with optimized play are a far cry from how I actually play, and having some defensive time is probably going to be important for me and many other players, and 3) if the playstyle really is so skewed away from core chargeblade gameplay, I have full confidence that capcom will tweak it over time.

I dunno if I'm just old or depressed or what but this was... Fine. Nothing really knocked my socks off. I'm not sure why I'm more excited for this than just playing Rise if the mood strikes me.

What is this I don't even.
  • EnigmedicEnigmedic Registered User regular
Wasn't it kind of important to have the artillery or something like that abilities for the big explosions with the CB though? It might scale better once you get access to that stuff as well. I haven't played the demo, but I imagine the armor you get just has like improved potions or something.

Low rank monsters are always boring if you're already a MH vet. It's what I felt with Rise until I reached late HR.

I kind of question their decision to have the network connection aspect happen before the menu appears, and you can quit since the servers aren't available yet. As opposed to the endless loop until you alt tab and close it externally.

Putting this here mostly for my own reference. It does seem like he is promoting a much more balanced playstyle, so that is a good contrast to my earlier post.
Going to need to watch this on repeat for the next few hours though; lots of muscle memory to unlearn!

So, uh...I've seen that Switch Axe now has TWO counters? One for Axe and one for Sword? And they dont use any resources? Is...is that true? If so, goddamn that's AWESOME. The elemental counter in Rise was great but the wirebug cost was annoying.

Edit: I found a video showing both counters. Holy shit man. I thought Lance was defensive?? Switch Axe here I come...

Yes! I tried them out both yesterday and they're not OP. The axe mode one is more powerful but more difficult to pull off since it has a somewhat long wind-up and small counter window, while the sword one is quick with a generous counter window. The axe one is the flashier of the two, it seems to have an added stagger bonus because the times I was able to pull it off, it would send the monster reeling back. It is really cool.

Aaaah, fantastic. I'm glad they both have uses. I'm super curious to see how gear and skills will impact the counters. Seems like just about every weapon has at least one now, so I'd be pretty surprised if they don't provide a way to build into a counter based playstyle.

Quick correction: The axe mode counter is not a counter, but an "Offset attack"!

Huh....so it's hyper-armor and a quasi-counter? Interesting...that'll be fun to figure out. Also makes more sense with the way Hunting Horn has to queue up a song for it - it seemed like too much effort for a counter, but makes more sense for a more technical punishment move.

did the opening hunt as a quick PC performance test

getting about 50-60 FPS without frame gen at high settings which is not amazing, i'll be honest, but probably acceptable enough if i can tweak settings (or heaven forbid, they optimize the game more prior to release) to hit a locked a 60. still, oof

Glad pc version gave me the choice to set controller cues as PS4. rise (or world) always showed xbox buttons which is annoying.
Got a consistent 60fps without tweaking any graphics setting.
Played through all available monsters with long sword. Digging the added moves.
Will probably try switchaxe or gunlance next.

Some of loading screens when joining multiplayer through quest board were kind of brutal.

Got down all the monsters using charge blade with only a couple carts on doshaguma due to not chasing off his buddies and also still trying to remember what all the various buttons do. I was also very surprised to jump off my seikret once with an lbg in hand, but easily explained by my getting confused on said buttons before mounting.
Anyways, yes new chainsaw moves are awesome and I think I’ve figured out how to actually do them somewhat consistently. Still need to work on how to get to a real saed, but most of my combos seem to be working pretty well.

    Edit
Also for those who didn’t realize like me early on, they actually give you four sets of armor you can swap in camp. Nothing spectacular at this level of course, but nice to have options and you even have set bonuses available!

Well, LS was working again after relaunching it.

    New stuff of note:
Can hold RT to charge spirit combo moves/spirit gauge. Longer you hold it the later the attack it releases, hits Roundslash before long. Useful.
Red is now it's own whole thing. Basic combo changes. Roundslash can combo into Crimson Combo, and there's a second roundslash you can do after the first. Gauge drains faster, foresight slash becomes a new version... It's cool, but maintaining it's going to suck.
Helm Breaker got a followup attack that spends a second level of spirit.

The upgraded foresight slash isn't any better than the old one (still a very small window etc), and whiffing it destroys your precious red gauge so... yeah. High risk low reward as ever, do not use.

...I miss Sacred Sheathe from Sunbreak already, so I'm probably not playing LS this game.

Oh man, sad that I was busy tonight. I'm really curious to see how well this will play on my PC. I built this machine as a high end upgrade to play MH World, so you can imagine it's a bit aged now. Thankfully gonna splurge on another high end machine once the next batch of video cards come out.

I'm running it smooth in potato-ish graphics on my own 2060. I was worried it would not let you lower settings enough to not kill my poor old GPU, but no, deactivating a bunch of the niceties and setting DLSS to balanced I'm getting smooth framerate. Sure sometimes people look like they're out of a PS3 game but I started playing game with the NES, I'm not scared of the occasional pixel!

But yeah, I ran two hunts and called it a day. All I wanted was to know was whether it ran playably, because if I can run it I will play this game full stop.

EDIT: Okay, further testing tells me I can reduce the potatoness significantly and still get a stable 45 fps, so that's great, cause I'm generally bothered by frame drops more than low stable frames, I'd much rather run at 45 stable than 60 but it dips to 40 at random. That said, I showed the usage stats in MSI afterburner while doing the testing and man this is absolutely a game that goes "you paid for the CPU so I'm going to use the whole CPU". Sure my processor is oldish, it's a Ryzen 7 3800X, but this thing was absolutely using all the cores, all the 16 threads were running and some were hitting over 80% usage.

So, in other new weapon toys - bow's arc shots seem more interesting now. They'll stick tracers on the monster as they hit... in multiple places. Not entirely sure if they function like the normal tracer on most shots, but they act as additional lock on points for the focus shot. Which lets you lock on 3 times to each tracer and wound before releasing a hail of homing arrows at them all, it's awesome.

Thousand Dragons is a spread Dragon Piercer basically, and definitely needs a tracer active. Coatings are applied in sets of 8, but you have infinite stock (it's a meter that you use for both coatings and tracers that refills as you charge shots). Infinite power coatings is huge.

Also, there's a leaping spread shot off the charging evade that I'm fairly sure is new as well? And of course, that's predictably useful with tracers to make all the arrows smack them in the face.

Press d-pad up to turn off the self-driving mode. There's a toggle in the options to have it not go automatically into self-drive mode too.

The game runs better than I expected, but it still doesn't run as well as I'd like. 5800x + 3070Ti, with almost everything in high and a few things in medium, 1440p with DLSS set to performance and I'm getting around 40-45fps when in an open area with multiple monsters.

Since the demo has some bugs that were also present in the Gamescom Germany demo, I'm going to assume it's a very similar preview build that isn't optimized. I'm just happy we don't have any stutter, that thing has been plaguing so many new games lately.
