    This actually tracks with the canon. The Rama sequels go *really* weird places. 3001 Final Odyssey was weird but the last couple Rama books were a fucking fever dream. David Lynch could direct a script by Hideo Kojima and it would be less weird.

    You can try to write them off but everything before Bright Messengers was ideas Clarke was happy to take credit for even if he made Gentry Lee do the writing, and the weird shit is 100% the kind of stuff he wrote in that era. Right down to the creation of a whole extra character just to have an unhinged side story about pedophilia - he did the same thing about incest, circumcision, bestiality, vegetarianism, and masturbation in books he actually put his own pen to paper for, and the whole plot of extra-universal aliens entering our universe early in its history to do poorly specified science stuff to life parallels what he did in Space Odyssey to the point that he called both series "orthoquels" to one another.

    I have to agree with Gabe, inscrutable cosmic shapes are sexy. Ozma is the sexiest character in Final Fantasy.
