Does the top of the comic get cut off when it’s pasted in this forum, or is it a problem with my phone?

I wonder if Thomas Kemper is keeping up with tech changes in IT, I'm sure with those original certs being over 20 years old now he needs some continuing education classes to stay up to date.

This is a weird thing to be amazed about. Revell and other model companies have been making Star Trek model kits for years.

I think you're missing the gunpla reference. My understanding is those types of models are basically just snap it together and you're done (though you can geek out and do lots of extra stuff). Models like Revell make are more your old glue stuff together and then paint (and decal) it type. Mike's hobby interest is in the former, not the latter.

Here's example shots of a Revell Enterprise vs a Bandai:

Yeah, those kits were far superior to Revel's offering or anyone else's. With fairly minimal skill the results looked on par with Eaglemoss die casts.

Star Trek is woefully under merchandised.

I don't get the appeal of gunpla over Revel in this instance. If you don't want to build the kit, aren't there plenty of prebuilt figures of similar quality? IE action figures?

Because there are different levels of "building the kit." There's a joy in assembling things, but for some people that joy is sucked away when it gets to a certain skill level and time commitment. Or to put it another way, just because you like sewing your own clothes doesn't mean you like weaving fabric.

It's amusingly full circle, given a lot of props in TNG were made from Macross/Gundam kits.

In my experience, there very frequently was no other options than kits, or the alternatives were of markedly poor quality.

Yeah, the prebuilt ones were usually marketed as toys rather than models.

I'm still shaky on the difference between a model kit and gunpla, though.

Edit: (How does one pronounce "gunpla" anyway?)

I think the biggest difference is one you have to paint and glue (Revel) while most Gunpla you don't have to put it together and now it's ruined. Gluing is kind of optional.

Gunpla are a subset of model kits. GUNdam PLAmo (plastic models). Some people use the term more loosely, though.

Ah, classic Penny Arcade wit! This one had me chuckling. The punchline hit perfectly, and the art style just keeps getting better. Anyone else catch the subtle nod to [insert specific reference]? Always a treat to see how they weave in those little details!

I'll never understand why people who dislike a thing keep subjecting themselves to it, and then post about how tired they are of it. Even going so far as to create an account just to do so.

Ah, the timeless struggle between expectation and reality! This comic perfectly captures that moment when things go hilariously off-script. Anyone else have a 'he did not' moment that still makes you laugh?
