People trying to blame Concord's failure on diverse and queer coded character design is just absurd. Not only because it's not really accurate, but also pokemon has been leaning hard into this for their human designs the past few games and they're the most popular human designs they've had.

It instantly falls apart when you say things like, "Concord failed because of WOKE, unlike Overwatch 2 and Valorant, which are famously uh... LBGT unfriendly... hmm..." I've seen pitiful attempts at squaring this circle like "Concord is MORE woke/TOO woke!" which doesn't mean anything, I've yet to see their wokes per unit measurement. I've seen the slightly more plausible sounding, "The introductory marketing was more explicitly diversity focused than other popular games, which added that stuff later," but that also falls apart when you recognize that one of the game's largest problems is that people didn't know about it and didn't look into it if they ever heard about it. The idea that the entire audience received a certain marketing message that they didn't like was extremely different from the reality, that the vast majority of the audience did not perceive the game at all, in any way.

My read on it was: the marketing rollout was poorly done (nothing to do with diversity, it was about previewing a multiplayer game as if it was a single player or co-op campaign, which is a current sore spot in marketing, created from stuff like Suicide Squad). That poor marketing led to low player counts for the beta playtesting (which was also very close to the launch). The beta impressions were so-so to bad, which created even less hype. Finally, two competing games (Deadlock and Marvel Rivals) had better received playtests close to Concord's launch and were both free to try, while Concord demanded a paid entry fee. All of these combined led to the very low player counts at launch, which then becomes a story that makes the game an object of scorn for those who HAVE heard of it.

All I heard about Concord was it had a player base of 14 {which I was curious how they collected that info} and it was being recalled
As I left it at that

Sony also decided that rather than trying to right the ship with clearer advertising before launch, that they'd just do absolutely no advertising at all.

The sorta folks who blame the failure of Concord on Woke, if not explicitly bad faith trying to blame any kinda failure on thing they don't like, comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of work. There's a concept they have that effort put into the project is a zero sum fungible resource and effort put into diversity is effort taken from somewhere else, like making the game good. That management letting queer characters be visibly in a project are a sign of bad managers and if they had good managers(who would leave queer characters on the cutting room floor) they would have a good project. The obvious marketing failures fall on deaf ears because they are somewhere between knowing that and trying to be inflammatory, and being convinced that resources allocated to not just having a buncha straight white guys character shooting at eachother is enough to have saved the project if used in other places.

I don't think Concord failed because nobody knew about it, or that they didn't promote it. I can kind of see arguing they didn't promote enough, like maybe somebody somewhere saw the writing on the wall after the first beta test and decided not to put anymore effort into marketing. But all the same they dedicated the opening 16 minutes of their State of Play to the game. Game sites covered the game. This wasn't stealth dropped out of nowhere. Enough people knew about it. The fact is that nobody cared. Absolutely nobody was interested in the game whatsoever. The phrase that comes to mind is "The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference". And boy howdy were people indifferent. Their first beta was initially only for preorders, until a few weeks prior when they changed it to be fully open. That means preorder numbers were dire.

that's the thing is i firmly believe that the people who watch state of play and read game sites are aggressively a minority

I am a person with 37 thousand posts on a video game related web forum who plays a few dozen games every year, and the very first time I ever heard of Concorde (outside of maybe seeing the name tossed around once or twice with no idea what it was) that I can remember was about a week before it came out. And that was only because someone mentioned that it cost like 40 bucks or something for a hero shooter that looked like it was just going to be an also-ran next to all the much bigger (and more free) hero shooters currently or soon on the market.

Absolutely no one I know in real life had ever heard of the game until it became a meme for being recalled and shuttered after a week.

The first time I heard of Concord was the trailer that made it look like a single player GotG type game. And then the hero shooter reveal came, and basically everyone I talked to about it (which was, granted, on these forums) was a near universal "lol no". So I was interested for all of maybe 3 minutes.

Concord is a place in Massachusetts.

Pronounced conkerd, like it has been visited by a certain squirrel.

Sad to hear that it has been shut down.

    But it's probably about time.

I’m a guy who’s extremely tuned into this stuff and I didn’t know Concord had a beta, let alone two of them

I didn’t even know Concord was out until the day after its release

That’s all on Sony far as I’m concerned

This guy is creating a demake of Mario 64 for the GBA, a console that was never really meant to render 3d graphics:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mUsgJ-HiDM

Crazy impressive how much he's achieved in only a few short months. It started out as just a tech demo with only the castle grounds just to see if it was possible, and now he's started building out the levels as well. :oB)

Hopefully this will see a release (if that is indeed his intent) before the big N notices and fires off a cease and desist etc.

Abject failure is like the default state of any multiplayer game, because it literally can't be played before it earns a community. You have to fight like hell for every inch just to reach that "playable" critical mass at launch, and then keep fighting in perpetuity to preserve it, and Sony was clearly not willing to do that for Concord.

They got away with it. It's so fucking absurd, the governor and election commission head were both on Bush's campaign team.

Also like a half million people's votes in florida were uncounted because of shit election practices?

Isn't that typical of Last Week Tonight segments. Here's this expose on something or someone, you may or may not have heard of, only we're going to talk mostly about everything that is absolutely fucked about that topic at hand. We'll throw in some humor to try and lighten the mood, but it's still going to be both depressing and infuriating.

some of his conclusions about hostages and such are a bit much for me. Also the uprising couldve targeted more military outposts more exclusively and achieved the same goals. The same amount of humiliation and baiting of isreal, and the same righteous revolution, the military posts they did target were overrun after all. There was no need from an uprising perspective or any of the frameworks he covers to target civilians directly for executions.
