Here's the thing about Concord--I remember watching a trailer during a State of Play, being baffled at anyone throwing a hero shooter on the market now, and then completely forgot about it. And then it came it out and it cost $40. And for me, why would I spend $40 on an unknown hero shooter when I can just play Overwatch for free? Nothing about it clearly demonstrated to me why I should spend money on something when there are already free-to-play juggernauts on the market. This game should've come out 8 or 10 years ago, not in 2024. And it sucks for the dev team, I know, but also, who is trying to throw a hero shooter on the market now, one you have to pay for? It was just a whole perfect storm of a bunch of decision-makers not reading the room at all.

I think it’s pretty obvious that the healer should have been riding a dinosaur, the barrel robot should have more barrel, the brute should have a head made of fire and Gurren shades, and the scout should just be a dog. That’s just character design 101.

unfair, the dog would be invulnerable because no one would shoot them

  • Endless_SerpentsEndless_Serpents Registered User regular
The dog carries no weapons, but when you press the attack button it still swings TF2 Scout’s baseball bat.

The barrel robot gains an extra barrel for every kill, until it becomes difficult to control like the guy from Death Stranding.

Why won’t Sony give me millions of dollars over an eight year period?!?

oh wait shit is that a pilot for an actual show idea

I kept waiting for the "just kidding, not for kids" violent turn, and it never happened. Something about the production values and specific references to the limitations of old shows (like the Sesame Street/Eureka's castle worm on a stick puppet) feel more like the nostalgia bludgeon jaded millennial horror media makers would focus on. When everybody started screaming, I thought "oh, this is it, the next cut will be to a bloodied puppet like Too Many Cooks or something" but then... nope! Business Duck lets them go over budget and it's all okay!

Is... is business duck specifically targeting the people who approve shows? That's.... cynical/savvy.

    We'll get back there someday.

The thing is Call of Duty doesn't rely on character designs because for the most part the entire representation of your character is gloves and the gun they carry. Even so there are characters I, a non-COD player am aware of such as Soap and Ghost. Also they just license characters you already love like John McClane and Rhea Ripley.

Another thing that probably didn't help Concord, is that Sony shat the bed pretty bad with how they handled Helldivers 2. There are a sizable number of people that are pretty pissed about that and aren't going to to touch any games that Sony handled as publisher, until Sony cleans up their mess.

Also it's incredibly cringe that the right fails to get the issue with the character design. Diversity isn't an issue. The issue is that Concord is a hero shooter and that means the characters need to bring a certain level of character and memorability, which they really don't have in the visual department and it sounds like dialogue isn't any better. Worse that failure can also heavily bog down things that the game did do well and it's not like the character design aspect was purely visuals either. Being able to quickly recognize a character either on silhouette or voice lines, quickly conveys useful information to the other players, that will help a team determine what they are going to do in a match.

It is a shame that everyone insists on trying to get in on the live service model. I'd argue that carcass becoming more a more bone by the day. Any new live service has to either time their entry right to take advantage of another live service shutting down, losing player in droves or the new live service has to be fucking amazing, so that it can brute force it's way into the market. As has been noted, usually you get 1-3 big players in each genre and a few medium sized life service games. So it tends to be really hard to break into that market unless you get lucky and you're pretty much dead if you get compared too much with an existing live service, that also has more content as a result of being older.

I think this is in reference to the whole region-locking thing from awhile ago.

If I remember right it was something a long the lines of Sony suddenly enforcing linking your PlayStation profile to be able to play.

I actually saw less marketing for Helldivers 2 than Concord, but the former had a memorable trailer and is an homage to a beloved movie, which lead to a lot of positive word of mouth and it snowballed from there.

What baffles me about 12 live service games is that these are in their very nature something players are expected to consistently commit time to in perpetuity.

So not only are you in competition with the established titans, but planning to release so many within a relatively short time frame leaves even less oxygen in the room.

Sterling makes this point almost every time they come up. A game that is designed for you to play it nearly as much as you work at a full-time job is a singular hobby. You can't really have much outside of it. Yet for years live service games were getting shoveled out because the execs got it in their head that, sure, it's crowded market, but ours is the one that's the best, and so it'll take over and make us all of the money.

How is it the best? Well, obviously, it has the most ways for the player to give us money.

Since CoD is often thought of the archetypal ‘dudebro’ game, it can be a bit startling to find about how large the thirsty mostly female segment is. One of my online acquaintances now has a well paying patreon where she does renders of the guys in… not combat suitable gear.

Live service games target a very specific audience and that audience is shrinking for multiple different reasons. And the older and more opaque a live service game is, the less new players it will have. At some point the folks leaving outnumber the folks starting and the game starts its trek towards death unless they can figure out a way to change the game to be newbie friendly without scaring away all the long-time players.

About that, it's still region locked out of the 177 nations, they blocked off. What Sony did, was the tried and true approach of "We know there are some in the boycott, who weakly support it and are desperate to get their fix. So all we have to do is make enough empty promises about walking our shitty idea back, without actually doing that and they'll jump back into the game, while also telling everyone to shut up about it because 'Sony said they weren't going to do it anymore and that all the proof we need!'" Last I checked, they added other games when people pointed out how full of shit Sony was, by listing those game snot being impacted by their insane policy. I feel bad for a number of developers because they got totally blind sided by Sony's fuckery, with no real benefit.

    Anyways
What baffles me about 12 live service games is that these are in their very nature something players are expected to consistently commit time to in perpetuity.

So not only are you in competition with the established titans, but planning to release so many within a relatively short time frame leaves even less oxygen in the room.

It's only really insane because of how many online services they wanted to roll out. I"m pretty sure there is no way to do 12 without some significant overlap of player bases. I"m not entirely sure what the number would be, but you could definitely go above one game because no one game is going to appeal to everyone, even weakly.

Obviously, this late in the game it gets even more insane because they are going up against established titans that have figured out how to not only retain players long term, but also have figured out ways to be new player friendly. So they wanted to do 12 live services that would be competing with at least one other service in that batch of 12 before having to then also contend with established titles. Sure live service games get shuttered for one reason or another and a sizable number of players going searching for something new, so some of this is a gamble of having a live service going that reels in all the players that are searching for a new source of entertainment. You don't need 12 services for that and doing so likely undermines the success rate for all of them.

  • I needed anime to post.I needed anime to post. boom Registered User regular
Part of the gamble, of course, is relying on the overlap. If your Users like multiple of your live service games and play multiple, why, that means it's more likely that they'll fall behind in the ones they play. And, hypothetically, that makes all the little timeskips you offer just that much more appealing. Oh, did you not put in enough time for the battle pass to complete? Well we've got some level skips here. Didn't get all the holiday items you wanted? Bulk lootboxes are available now.

But, as we've mentioned, that gamble is not playing out large-scale.

Right, you can't make a PSN account officially in those countries, but the outcry was about changing the steam version to require a PSN account to be linked to play, which Sony relented on after getting hammered with bad press for it for a weekend. That had been their intent originally because they do all their moderation through the playstation network systems, but suspended that requirement temporarily during launch to try to help alleviate the server issues. After the pushback they realized it was not worth the annoyance customers were expressing.
