[steam] Autumn Sale now on: Beware backlogs and classholery!
Posts
Until today. More than two years of silence, suddenly there's a big patch fixing some bugs, adding some new customization options, and adding some QoL improvements (including streamlining a specific type of sidequest that never made much sense).
I have to admit, as pleasing as it is to see this game still worked on, I'm also very surprised.
The subsequent compilation times being significantly shorter than the initial one tells me it's not actually rebuilding all the shaders each time, but whatever it's doing it's probably not something truly needed (unless it's after a patch).
Did you get invited to the steam group yet?
I don't know anything about game design. . .but this game is a mess at the moment. Like, I can't even cap framerates so that I'm not swinging wildly between 40 and 60FPS (rather just have a smooth 40FPS locked) having given up on getting my controller to work (just flat out doesn't work period, which is a common complaint on STEAM and Reddit).
. . .like I was ready for jank, but this is just coming in too hot. Might be a refund for me (which blows because this game looks right up my alley).
Woo!!!
Thanks so much, @KoopahTroopah, and congratulations on your latest successful drive! (And thanks to @Undead Scottsman for passing, I guess! )
I picked Catclismo because it looks like fun, and when Koopah saw that it was on sale he threw in a copy of the highly regarded (and highly addictive) BALATRO as well - much appreciated!!

Can't cap frame rates as in the Frame Rate limiter setting in the Display options isn't working or that you can only pick from set values and not specifically use 40?
Edit: My USB Xbox controller seems to work without issue. I switched to one years ago for my PC because the couple 3rd party controllers I had before were hit and miss on functionality through Steam.
I don't think so.
Should it be under notifications or do I have to go digging through the menus?
I was minding my own business hating the day as usual, when out of the blue @Karoz decided to attack me. Now, I've been giftbombed before, at times I've been hit with as many as TEN games in a single day when drafted into the Gift Wars. But never, and I mean NEVER, have I been hit with FIFTY FUCKING GAMES AT ONCE! Hide your spouse, hide your kids, hide your pets, if they can get me they can get ANYONE!!
Spoilers for the carnage and screen real estate, the faint of heart should not click to see:
The in-game limiter I think works, but yeah, there are no options for arbitrary frame rates; I've got Rivatuner running but the game does not want to acknowledge my frame limiting.
. . .I at least got my controller working, but had to use third-party software to do so.
See if you can trick it into using other values by directly editing the FrameRateLimit value in the c:/users/<account name>/appdata/local/stalker2/saved/gamesettings/appliedsettings.cfg file.
I could buy the Judgement games too I guess, I always forget they exist but I'm not really that interested in them until literally everything else and thats like *checks* nine games.
My progress through the zone was akin to a time reloop story, reset by frequent quicksaves.
I'm playing this even if my computer is on fire I don't give a fuck.
Waiting for the dl to finish....
I am unreasonably upset that Fake Kiryu isn't one of the units in the Majima Construction minigame.

Now I'm really glad I declined that.

Thanks @Iolo ... I tried but couldn't figure out how to invite to a group, only to the chat.
Perfect.
It's a very sink or swim first encounter.
i felt a pang of joy seeing part of the clear sky mission where you raid strelock's hideout
Even though you have at least 20 bones for them?

Really love this game on veteran. Maybe do not play it on veteran if you don't love feeling like going literally anywhere is a massive risk tho. I know that can be stressful and I'll tell ya now you pick veteran, that's what you are signing up for.
stalker?
Now I've seen everything.

"The space witches burned down my beaver city. Lost millions of cheese worth of rat carcasses."
I'm always torn between wanting to play the games being described and not wanting to know what they are because the posts are such delightful context free nonsense.
It's odd that killing humans with guns is way easier than killing a pack of ravenous dogs. I guess maybe not that odd. But still feels odd.
That is so fucking close to the emtional texture of Against the Storm and what a stargate city builder should feel like that I'm almost convinced i wrote that
Thanks to the both of you!
It actually was not among the general notifications and I had to dig into the Friends and Chat section to find it so apologies if someone sent an invite earlier and I just didn't see it.
Loved the first chapter, but I am a bit worried I might burn through it and then get stuck waiting for chapter 5.
Also, my wife loved StP so, after getting an unspoiled ending each, we decided to try and see other branches by switching controllers between chapters and see how much fun we have setting up one another for horrible outcomes.
For me the difficulty is coming from just trying to figure out the game systems - and I mean the ones that you aren't explicitly told about. Like the game isn't consistently "gamified." Radiation is a good example: in most games, the game would have you come across a clear source of radiation and a nice prompt would tell you to watch out for these sources; here, you're just told radiation is bad. It took me too long to realize it wasn't just in bodies of water or around random items in the environment clearly labeled, it is in everything and the only way to know is to look out for the diegetic signs, or just listen to the geiger. Which, okay sure, that is how it is in Chernobyl (as much as I know about that place from seeing the HBO show), but this is a vidya-game and it would be nice to know what level of "realism" the game is going for.
Overall though, it's a solid game and what I was hoping it was. The game is for sure janky and there's a lot of polish that needs to happen (controllers do not feel good here; as a primary controller gamer, I can tell the difference between a game where controller support was a priority from the beginning and one in which it was a late edition; there was also this moment after the prologue where I went back to get my stashed gear but the game just magically took away two really good weapons because I guess you aren't meant to start with them) but you can clearly see what they are going for here. There's this other SOOPER janky open-world game (not survival) called GENERATION ZERO that this game reminds me of, except the enemies there are robots. But the density of scale, difficulty in encounters (along with managing shit gear) and resource management remind me of that game, except here it does feel like it has been done a lot better.
. . .but yeah, the sense of a lack of polish is there and something - with the games overwhelming success - the developers are going to have to get on ASAP (as I expect player count, and possible negative feedback, is going to increase as we get to the weekend).
For a second I thought there might be a space witch dlc for Timberborn and now I'm disappointed.
Love that it tracks em!
Love that it tells me nothing. I gotta work it all out myself. This is just like the original in all the ways I loved.
I hate that it tracks them and puts them in my face with every failure. 🤣
I finally got a nice working gun (Viper-5, fully repaired and with holo sight) so it's starting to feel like I can fight back.
Now this has me extremely curious. Tell me more please!
Against the storm's gameplay cycle feels a lot like FOBs established in the various Stargate shows. Stargate Atlantis most of all. Always on the back foot, always adapting to unknown threats. Fighting against the fog of war. Victory a concept based on not fucking up.
So if I were to have this game, it would basically be sending it into a new network, locking and loading to explore a planat and the region the stargate landed in before the SGC disengaged for reasons (black holes, starships, wraith attack, cyber swarm attack, shifting to another universe). Each smaller run a series of stories and people cycling back to the primary base. Maybe special missions with heroes and special modifiers. Combat less RTS and more.....Evil Genius?
