[Fitness] 20 laps around the tree
Are y'all keeping up with your routines during the holiday? Taking a break? Going heavy to make room for more pie?
This morning is cardio & weights before I head to the family house and get loaded with lots of good home cooking over the next days.

But it's gonna be anywhere between -8 and -13 up until the Saturday, and it'll be snowing too. So maybe it'll just be up on the trainer and maybe the occasional swim until the new year.

Might get a whole family 5K on New Years Day though. Very nice of the organizers to schedule it for 10am instead of the normal race time of 7am.
I lost a hit of strength off my lifts over the break and was way more sore after. I’m also unable to do the 5k I was doing before. Just kept to a single mile run today. Going to do a full three miles of walking though.
I’ll build both back up in time.

I've got a biodex test in late January, and whether or not I can play in a tournament in February is reliant on me getting the green light there.
I mean, I'll have to manage my minutes and wear a hinged brace, but better than flying all the way to Vegas to sit on the sideline and watch.
But on the other hand, I wanna absolutely destroy my body with food and booze and do nothing but play video games.
In summation, a land of contrasts etc etc

Merry Christmas, all you strong and fleet of foot nerds!
Feel pretty much back to normal so time to get back to my routine.
I'll also try to climb, even if my climbing gym has not put up any new lead routes in a while.
I guess I could Boulder......
A big snowstorm here that's been slow to be cleaned up has kept me off the roads the past two days, and I think that it will today too. I might WANT to run, but slipping and cracking a bone is pretty detrimental in the long term. Instead, I am carb loading. And fat loading. And a little bit of protein loading. Bulking, let's call it.
Oh man, I was using the gym near my sister's place when I was in Australia for a month, and i was unreasonably nettled that things were different.
This morning I went to the gym at work, but because I packed my bag in a post sleep haze, forgot my runners.
Did my physio, but decided against running on the treadmill in socks. And we've just had a big dump of snow, so running outside is not on the cards.
I guess I'll try and do 30 minutes or so on the bike later, if I have the time.
I wonder when the commercial gyms open back up after Christmas, I might have to get a few day passes....

Exactly! trying to use the leg curl machine when it goes the other way is intense!
Also, I have shattered both my knees.

It’s hard. I love food.
It's really rough trying to change how you eat. I've never done well at all with like specifically health-conscious you know tracking macros or whatever, but I do think that honestly the biggest improvement in my eating habits has come from trying very hard to cook as much as I can and ordering curbside pickup.
Something about having to lay out the whole grocery list in a row and be like this is all accounted for in the recipes I'm planning makes me think ah I probably don't need several types of potato chips as well. I guess impulse buys are obviously less compelling when you're not in person.
We got more snow on the 24th. Rather than help my family chop vegetables, I went out to clear my brother’s driveway and sidewalk. My project expanded, and I cleared the sidewalks down his whole street from corner to corner, and then went around the corner and shovelled that stretch too. About 150 metres of sidewalk shovelling. My watches don’t think that I did any meaningful amount of exercise, but my arms and butt feel like something happened.
I could get used to this.

It's ok, I love food too! You can totally do it!
Well, 2024 is in the books for running. One of the things that I like about running is just how much data can be generated, and used to measure progress or to indicate areas for potential improvement.
There was a lot of good for me in 2024, most notably new PBs at 5k (20:33), at 10k (43:38), and at the HM (1:34:59). I’d say that I’m 95% of the way recovered from my hernia surgery; it rarely pains me, and almost never pains me on a run. But I’m not quite back to my old form, as I’m running about 15 to 20 seconds per km slower than I did in April/May/June. I am running faster than I did last December, so there’s that - it makes me optimistic about my chances of getting a new HM PB this March. One thing that I’ve noticed is that my cadence has fallen off a bit since I was able to resume running. It used to be around 175 steps per minute, and now it’s about 168 or so. At my stride length, that’s seven or eight metres per minute or more, which might not sound like much, but it adds up fast.
My favourite shoe this year was the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4; I got my 10k PB in that. The runners up for me were the Hoka Mach 6 and the Saucony Axon 3; my 5k PB came in the Hokas, and the Axons were absolute mileage monsters that could pick up the pace surprisingly well.
I finished the year just short of 3,000 km, which is just over 600 km short of my goal. But given how July/August/September were so disastrous for me with illness, hernia issues, and recovery from surgery, I’m not losing sleep over it. My hernia and recovery from getting the hernia fixed kept me from doing any full marathons in 2024, but hopefully I’ll run the local city marathon in May 2025. It might be overly ambitious, but my goal right now is a finish in under 3:20, which would be a 4:44 or faster pace. I think that I’m close to being capable of that now; the big thing is putting in the kilometres to build the endurance necessary, and for my legs to relearn the lessons about just how much they can suffer and still keep going.
My New Years goals are to do more fast 5k or so runs, to do more hills, and to try to pick up my cadence.
This data comes from Garmin:
This data comes from my Apple Watch and Nike Run Club; it tends to underestimate distance slightly.
Then the next day I get a letter in the mail from the gym saying "sorry, we're actually closed forever now, as of a couple hours after you left yesterday"
So I guess I need a new gym
You basically worked out and they decided they couldn't handle your essence
I hope you get any money back that they still had from you.

I am considering getting a paddle board because it seems like a fun way to exercise and spend a morning on lake Michigan.
Depending on the season haha.
I may sign up. Obviously not to win but to give myself a metric to work towards and kind of keep me honest. Consistency has always been my issue and maybe this will help give me a tangible goal to stick to for the first 1/3rd of the year.
I'm currently at about 220 lbs give or mostly give and have been for a year or so. I'd like to get as close to 200lbs as possible but I think, realistically, 210 lbs is what I'm going to shoot for.
Running: Distance 258.9 km - 34h 7m, and my 5k PB was 24:16
Swimming: Distance 45.6 km - 77h 5m and my average speed is 2:43/100m
Cycling: Distance 2,755.7 km - 155h 53m and an average speed of 15.77kmph (I think this is massively skewed by so much of my cycling being community on a bike sharing bike, and not racing)

I felt I needed to start the year off with a faster run, so I did a 5K around the neighborhood after the race. Strava gave me a 22:00 for that. And I feel I could have gone a little faster. I ran up a set of stairs at one point, and was running into a pretty heavy wind for about half the run. (Strava has my PR at 21:21).
My stats for the year were a little lower than 2023, I know travel and sickness kept me from a number of runs.
1879 miles, 290.5 hours, 88.5K feet of elevation gain.
Social media reminded me how far I come in 4 years.
Really happy not only with my progress and changes but just my approach to my health and weight.
I struggled with it all my life but these past couple of years I think I finally landed at a good place mentally about it.
I work out, eat healthy and track my weight but it's not something I obsess about and let it take over my life. I still enjoy indulges and def have had months when my weight went up a bit. I just refocus and keep at it.
My partner and i agreed on aiming for an 8-10 week cut, so I just bought a bunch of fun protein foods and also signed up again for a high protein meal prep service I tested out last week (a local kitchen that makes pretty darn tasty pizza-pop-alikes filled with barbacoa beef and also little pre-made meals that just need to be microwaved)
Nothing like a few weeks of binge eating to make you excited about making small healthy meals!

Okay well a lot of things about this post
1. Exercise is only maybe like 1/3 of a contributor to someone's physique, much bigger influences are genetics and substantially - food
2. Exercise is good for people of any size, for far more reasons than fat loss, and if you're not sure which you're able to do due to accessibility concerns you can work with a physiotherapist and/or a dietician to help get on the right track - but again, if you're only worried about your body shape or composition, what you eat has a far greater impact (but strength training is great for building your metabolism and often gets people closer to their idealized physique, and cardio can be amazing for heart health - even just adding a 15-30 minute walk a day can do loads)
