If it's just an ignore feature, it's really not going to do what some people need it to do, since if it works like vanilla. They can just opt to expand things and see it anyways. Much like the hiatus, sometimes people just need something they can't easily override because they know their self control won't get them through.
Not that I need such a feature, but I do think others would benefit from such a feature.
It does not. In XF ignore completely hides ignored content. Unless an ignored user is quote an then it's collapsed or something? Threads and forums and whatnot are fully hidden and you have to go into your profile to restore them
Ignored content won't appear at all, there is a "Show ignored content" button at the bottom of the page though. If someone quotes an ignored post, it will be hidden, but a button will be there to temporarily show ignored posts. I think it's doing everything it can short of literally banning you from threads or something.

Also it even takes away who the ignored poster is.
So it's like "a blocked user has been replied to: click here to show post" (while still showing the response to that post)
Honestly if you ignore someone on CR they might as well not be on the forum as far as your layout goes.
As someone who doesn't xwitter, what does 'the way it used to work' entail?
Like, a two-way street? I block someone and not only do I not see them, they don't see me?
Because that seems ripe for abuse. Don't like someone's viewpoints? Just Block them and be sure to start the next thread on the topic you'd rather not see them.
It's one thing to have a populous of millions where blocking someone isn't much of a big deal. When your population is down to 1-2k, and more importantly, something under a hundred of those (if not a few dozen most commonly) are the ones creating threads, such a feature could remove a lot of folks from a topic they might wish to discuss, even if it's created by someone they aren't fond of.
There were recent times where a subforum would have half a dozen+ threads created by the same person on the front page. Run afoul of that person, and you'd lose access to a lot of discussions, and presumably wouldn't even know it, as letting people know whom they're blocked by is hardly going to bring the temperature down.
Am I off base here or misunderstanding something? Because that's based off of an impression that I note may well be incorrect, but wasn't exactly given much to work with here, and a cursory Google'ing indicates that I think I'm at least on the right track.

A two way block would be kind of hilarious for lurkers. The reciprocal part is also somewhat bypassed by making lurker alts if you know what you're doing

This is the NFL thread when you have me ignored:
I can still see and interact with your posts. Also you can still see in the subforum that there is an NFL thread that I am the OP of.
Separately you can ignore threads, tags, or entire subfora (iirc, the last one may not be true currently).
Also note all of this is only related to posting - DMs and profile content visibility can be managed separately.
maybe the real panopticon was the friends we made along the way

I will note that ignore features are being thoroughly explored and tested - I know "trust me bro" can be weak sauce from a privacy and safety perspective, but the features work, and they work well

Since ignoring seems to be obvious at this level where it modifies topics and stuff, it would be interesting to see how much this actually motivates people to maintain a multiverse of discussion in threads with significant ignore configurations. People could participate in the same thread and have entirely different conversations with entirely different memories and takeaways! It seems like an exciting thing to be a part of, where you can never be sure whether you're living in an alternate history from your peer.

How do you define blocking? There is a separate "conversation starters" block list, which stops people from DMing you but doesn't ignore them.
