I find the story and lore to be pretty good. The actual on-game writing though? Uhhh.. I have to go with fucking terrible. Its way too long winded and up its own ass. Now the English translation is pretty ass, so maybe the original Chinese is better? But I almost always blow through the in-game writing as fast as possible and then use wikis/reddit to piece the actual lore together.
I will give an exception to Chapter 7 and 8 (the latest two chapters) where the visual elements made it a lot more bearable, and was actually pretty impactful. The art direction is always top notch.
I find the lore pretty interesting, but the translation, pacing, and delivery to all be pretty disappointing. Basically the art and music is fireman carrying the rest of the presentation, which is (losing the analogy)... dying somehow?
The story starts very, very slow, but improves considerably for chapter's 6-8. The more recent event stories are usually pretty strong, leaning more into random bits of world building and character development instead of anything too plot intensive.
And yeah, while I don't mind the in game writing, it is definitely, uh, wordy. Lots of Visual Novel type prose, with characters going out of the way to be as descriptive as possible about their feelings, no matter the situation, and no using three words when twenty will do. Where the writing does excel, imo, is thematically, especially in the more recent chapters and events. The early stuff is very by the numbers gacha story and kinda dull, just a bunch of "hello self insert with inexplicable memory loss, here is bad guy, go hit bad guy, oh no bad guy has semi tragic backstory," with a bit of worldbuilding and setup for the future. Eventually all the setup pays off in a big way (Chapter 8 is brilliant imo, even with the overblown scenery chewing from certain characters), but getting to that point might be a bit rough if the gameplay isn't hooking you at all.
As for depressing, uh, yeah, I'd say so? The setting is basically "post apocalyptic hell world where a good percentage of the population has incurable magic rock cancer," with all the tragic backstories and fucked up shit that that implies. Most of the truly depressing stuff is in the background lore instead of the main plot (you get extra bits of lore via "operator files" whenever you pull or level up a character, they can get pretty brutal), but there are a few major gut punches in the main story proper.
Edit: Oh yeah, the translation. Best described as serviceable, I guess? Again, starts out really rough (though I think they may have gone back and fixed it up a bit?), gets better around chapter 6-8, still a few random mistakes, grammar errors, and awkward phrases even in the most recent stuff

I didn't have a problem with it, but then again... my units. Continuing to use Mudrock in as many stages as possible with great success. and Bagpipe just nukes Crownslayer out of orbit when you apply slows.
Ahaha. Clearing a challenge by waking the flagbearers early and just bursting down everything I woke up with it, since they only trigger once. SA+borrowed Surtr+Blaze clears a whole lot of shit.
...only challenge left is maximum grudgebearers. That one could get ugly.
Today was pretty easy since the enemies got basically no durability boosts. I had Blaze top and Bagpipe holding the right (with Hoshiguma to catch the bully). Had to redo once because Blaze didn't quite kill a ghost and I didn't react fast enough.
Can confirm the markup, since I've been working on Red cert things for a while. Getting the 4 720 potential chips is stamina expensive as hell (I already have max potential Ethan and Breeze).

Yeah the lack of level 2 tags is a real pain in the ass. Barely pulled it off using push/pullers to keep those Wraith's in line of Eyja blowing things up.
It would have been a lot easier if I wasn't having to do anti-Crownslayer setups too. Eyja S3M3 deletes the wave of strong wraiths nicely, at least. The last wraith wave I had blown the bomb to ensure Crownslayer would die, but I had a borrowed Surtr there with S3 active. And SA S3 was going off covering the area. And Ceobe had been redeployed over there to root shit. They did not survive long.
I dislike today's map. Super buffed ghosts and buffed Crownslayer.
Ceobe s2 plus Angelina s3 stalls her nicely, but she still survived the first pass.
Used Thorns, Mudrock, Suzuran, and Angelina myself for Crownslayer. Suzu and Ange slowing her down, then Mudrock's S3 stunning her after the passthrough and then massive damage. Then added Exusiai and Ifrit afterwards to make the rest of the map easier.
Yeah, max risk was tricky today, though not too bad once I figured out the strat. Basically had two teams, a physical burst team just to nuke crownslayer (Schwarz/Bagpipe/Silverash s3 for burst, Rosa s3 + Texas s2 for the stun into bind), then retreated almost everyone and set up ifrit + Eyja + support Sutr for the wraiths, with Ceobe s2 and Saria s3 for cc.

Yeah to me it very much feels like they just have someone (who is not super great at English) doing a literal translation. That's why everything feels stiff. A good localizer would modify the script slightly to better fit with a natural English speaking manner. I honestly have trouble following what's happening at times because of it. But the story in general is pretty decent. I still need to go back and read chapter 8 tho...
Of course, they still leave in plenty of mistakes all over too. I think they did go back and fix some of the "${player}" stuff, but I swear every chapter gets released with at least one or more levels still in Chinese because they didn't even bother to translate it (it's like they forget that some levels have in-game dialog...).

I swear as I get older I can barely hold it together for a whole map if I'm not just dropping Ops in and leaving them alone.

Also...
S3 is the most used/standard but S2 is also good for permanent placement and high burst.
// Switch: SW-5306-0651-6424 //
s3 is boss/tough killing and s2 is for constantly mowing down mooks

Shockingly easy once the initial drops are down

Bones strong
Of course, my phone can't capture the event but the clouds turned out pretty
And this is me trying to look directly at the sun.
Actually didn't need the drone disabler and it messed up the timing, would take the risk that removes it if I re-did it
