I think there is a fundamental difference between being collectively traumatized by a handful of fellow men and the hand of God sweeping millions of people off the globe in anger. I highly prefer the movie ending where Manhattan is the perceived threat, but I think the psychic element might have added the final layer to the plan to make it believable. It's one thing to suspect you've angered a deity and another to know beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Either way, the thought experiment isn't about whether or not it works. You're supposed to take it as a given that it does and wrestle with the question of what you would do if you knew the truth. Is justice worth sacrificing peace? I think I would stand with Dan, paralyzed and impotent.

I guess my perception of the movie was flavored by having already been spoiled on the premise from the comic, where my understanding was that it was framed as "mankind will unite to defend against the aliens and in the meantime realize the futility of war". So the movie just seemed to swap in Dr. Manhattan as that external threat that they would unite to fight (not knowing that fighting him would have basically been impossible).

If they had framed the situation more as "play nice or the moon god will destroy everything", that might have made more sense but would have kind of removed the question of whether to tell people "the truth". Because Dr. Manhattan playing along meant that even if he didn't actually do the nuclear attack, the threat is real anyway.

Trump is now directly demanding French companies in the US comply with his anti DEI bullshit which is fun because I work for one of those big French companies who are still doing DEI stuff.

So I'm very interested (mildly terrified) in how this is going to shake out.

Like, we are one of the top 10 biggest French companies in the US. We did about $11.5 billion in sales in 2024. We have contracts with the federal government including the DoD. We employ nearly 10,000 people in South Carolina and roughly 23,000 across the US and Canada.

This is a big fucking fight to pick and I imagine he's going to try and lean on our shit government to pressure us. I just don't know who's going to win out. We've been here since the 70's with our NA headquarters here since like, the 80's? We've been a MAJOR part, I'm talking tent pole staple, of this states economy for 40+ years.

At best we lose our federal contracts, which I don't really deal with and have zero idea of how much of our bottom line that makes up.

    Fuckin sick of this shit.

Swiss pharma giants Roche and Novartis already removed their DEI policies some days ago

    https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/roche-abandons-global-diversity-targets-concern-over-us-executive-orders-2025-03-19/

Not sure the Swiss are who I'd look to to stand on principals when profit is involved, tbh.

Start every one sitting in a wingback armchair in a smoking jacket reading a book. After a few seconds, look up, say "Oh, hi!" and then start your presentation.

I've spent this weekend clearing out the ol' relic closet - I've had quantum-indeterminate bowling balls piling up in there for years - running fissures with the singles and pairs to turn them into prime junk/ducats (and maybe score something nice off my squadmates) and putting the bigger stacks up on warframe.market for plat, which I've been using to buy the components for a lot of neglected weapons and warframes. Building the latter has been greatly assisted by the above-noted argon drops from the Gift of the Lotus mission on Earth, which pretty reliably gives 1-2 per run; a mobile defense against low-level Grineer in the jungle is a lot more convenient than taking my chances out in the Void.

I've also been playing Commander Shepard and trying to help all of the new arrivals with their personal problems, as I did before with the original Hex. Flare's is a particularly thorny one, and I've come to realize we have more in common than I thought:
like them, I'm stuck with the talking space cancer as long as I keep playing, and while I try to ignore that unpleasant aspect of the game/lore as much as possible - I don't use the Helminth room for anything but popping pink zits, and own no Infested or Coda weapons - sometimes it just won't fucking leave me alone.

I feel like the movie made it clear that everyone on the planet was under the impression Jon would kill more people if they didn’t get their shit together, and Jon, realizing this, let it stand despite knowing the truth.

There’s no way Jon is letting that much destruction go to waste, even from space. Jon let it happen because he knew it would work.

Also, I looked at the order a little and it doesn't necessarily appear it was Trump saying that French companies in the US have to submit to his demands. It almost reads like he's demanding French Companies in France submit to his demands.

I still imagine I'm gonna lose my job within the next few years but at least it will come with some small satisfaction of getting to watch the French tell him to go fuck himself sideways.

And when you dive down a bit, this is also the conclusion of The Abyss (by one of Atomika's favorite directors ;) ): "play nice or the sea gods will destroy everything." As awful as the threat of nuclear suicide is, it's just been replaced (along with all human agency) by another existential threat: beings that might change their minds and wipe us all out any time they feel like it. Or, if they decide there are too many of us and we're polluting too much, use their mind-control powers (from the novel) to make a few billion walk into the ocean or go stand on the beach to get culled by tsunami. And there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. Fucking chilling stuff.

If the point was that Manhattan was going to be this benevolent godking who would enforce civility on the planet, why did Ozy do the whole thing with the fake cancer patient? I know part of that was to shake John's confidence and/or push him down the path of inhumanity, but I thought it was equally intended to make the public see Manhattan as this dangerous monster, so that he could be the "threat they unite against"?

Hey, I just put a bid down on my first house, so does that make me qualified to post here? I'm a little nervous about the housing market and living near DC is ridiculous (seriously, this "starter" house with a quarter acre is asking more than my parents paid for their much larger retirement waterfront property 10 years ago) but I'm pretty sick of renting and I want to stick around the area for a while at least, so it seems like the right time. And I have enough for a 25% down payment without dipping into any of my retirement savings (not just my 401k, I have additional money socked away as well), so the market would need a major dip to put me underwater.

Any words of encouragement for someone who is about to put a good chunk of their savings into their down payment?

Yes, but that's the same thing. Oz can't run the scam forever, he is mortal. Manhattan needs to be distracted during the plan, sure, but he also needs to be dealt with long term. Showing him that he can be outsmarted and that he's out of touch with humanity gets him to fuck off. He can't be around in either version. He's either the villain or the entire world would look to him to solve the space squid problem. Movie or comic, if he sticks around, he breaks the plan.

Oz doesn't really have a plan for that. Instead he goes through with it anyway and hopes that Manhattan does nothing (which works). He is hoping that Manhattan buys into what Oz is selling (which he does after a bit of prodding). Basically his only other option at that point is to kill Oz and take over himself to save humanity, which he does not want/care so he just leaves.
