Forza 2 came out recently. This got me to thinking about how you travel in Fallout 3. Are you able to drive your rust bucket in real time around a zone or in designated areas or will it be what we saw in Fallout 2, where you 'drive' a cursor over a map?

Why do elitists have to make ignorant generalizations?

edit: As for the driving. I think it would be neat if they did happen to have a car featured in the game to make the player have to walk to travel until he finds/repairs the car, then he gets a Fallout state/world map and can fast travel wherever.

Oh, man, Saint's Row would have been so awesome with turn-based combat.

Best case? It'll be a kick-awesome new type of play we've never seen. I dunno, I'm nervous about it, so my worst-case is something along the lines of Doom 3 meets Oblivion.

How the fuck could it end up even remotely like Doom 3? This is a serious question. Do you expect super-mutants to pop out of hidden wall-compartments and yell "boo!" whenever you walk past? That the game will just be really, really dark? What's your reasoning here?

I find that I tend to hoard items - like, steal or pick up almost everything in the game - and sell them all for items that don't weigh anything in Fallout. By the end of Fallout 2 I had like $50,000 and nothing to spend it on, plus like 300 Stims, 100 Jet, RadAway/RadX, like 50 Psycho, and like 20 Mentats and Buffout.

I'm beginning to think getting all that was a waste of time.

    Fallout Tactics question:

Is it possible to be an effective melee (hand to hand, specifically) character, or are you basically forced to go with a gun type?

I ask cause I have the strange mental picture of one of my guys sneaking around and then doing a Larry, Curly, and Moe style critical strike to the eyes at random.

early missions yes, but later on you pretty much need heavy/energy weapons.

Ooooh... alright, thanks for clearing that up, does it actually do more damage than the turbo plasma rifle and the gauss rifle... I always just gave it to an NPC or sold it.

    *edit* nm, figured it out
    M72 Gauss Rifle
    Category: Weapon
    Weight: 9
    Value: 8250
    Skill: Small Guns
    Damage: 32-43
    Minimum Strength: 6
    Ammo: 2mm EC (20)

    Turbo Plasma Rifle
    Category: Weapon
    Weight: 14
    Value: 10000
    Skill: Energy Weapons
    Damage: 35-70
    Minimum Strength: 6
    Ammo: Micro Fusion Cell (10)

    YK42B Pulse Rifle
    Category: Weapon
    Weight: 9
    Value: 17500
    Skill: Energy Weapons
    Damage: 54-78
    Minimum Strength: 6
    Ammo: Micro Fusion Cell (10)

^If god used an energy weapon it would be this

The Guass Rifle is much better.
Range: Guass Rifle is 50 range, YK42B is 30 range. IIRC, Fallout calculates range penalty as a fraction of maximum range, so at a midrange fight, you'll hit more often with the Guass Rifle.

Damage Type: Guass Rifle is physical, YK42B is plasma. Combat Armor takes effectively 20% more damage from physical than plasma. Similarly, Advanced Power Armor takes 12% more more damage. Lower level enemies take better damage from plasma, but as a general rule of thumb anything in metal armor or better will be more vulnerable to physical.

Ammo and Magazine: The YK42B gains no benefit from it's ammo. The Guass Rifle employs 2mm EC, which gives -30 AC, -3 soak, -20 resistance. As a comparison, Advanced Power Armor gives 30 AC and Combat Armor gives 20 AC, negating it's protection and then some. The -20 resistance is also a big factor. When firing on combat armor that 20% damage bonus goes to 60% more than plasma, and on Advanced Power Amor it leaps from 12% more to 62% more damage by being physical. Also, the Guass Rifle has a 20 round clip compared to the 10 of the YK42B.

General Usefullness: Small guns is a much easier skill to get through the game with than energy weapons. Also, lots of NPCs are more proficient with small guns than energy. When you add up the accuracy bonus and the -30 AC, it means that the Guass is a lot safer to put into their hands than energy weapons.

TLDR: The YK42B can put up more impressive numbers, but for anything you'll actually need either of these weapons for, the Guass Rifle is going to out perform anything else.

    Short answer: No.
    Less short answer:
Later in the game you go up against robots, who are just utter rape. They've got basically impenetrable armor to anything short of guass/heavy/energy weapons.

You could also do yourself a big favor by skipping that quest. Fighting dozens of rats is really lame, unless you've put your skillpoints into melee/unarmed or already have the 10mm pistol, in which case it's just annoying. The car part you get isn't required, either, so there's not much to miss out on.

I'm not really sure, after reading the stats posted by zerg rush, why the Gauss Rifle is good. I understand the energy penalty as opposed to physical, but I've gone through FO1 at least using a max perception build and a very high energy weapons skill and I never have a problem hitting enemies from very, very far away for massive damage potential. Even with inadequate strength, this is true.

have to go with zerg rush on this. I also think the guass rifle is way cooler. also also if you want lots of 2mm EC ammo, there's that cave near arroyo (starter town, named something like that) with lots of geckos. all the way in the back is an elevator. I think its either a high science or repair skill, you can access it and get inside. there's a shitload of different weapons and ammo (and an enemy robot) but most notably is the crapload of 2mm ammo you can get in a locker. think there might also be a gauss weapon in there as well.

anyways I like to tag and work on small arms and just small arms, which is easier than working on it for a while at the start of the game and then switching over to something new like energy weapons later on. just a personal preference.

To get in that cave (north of Klamath) you need to repair the generator and have the electric lockpicker from Navarro. Unelss there is another way...cause the door will tell you it is locked but you have no way to lockpick it without the device.

I'm pretty sure I remember there being a second electric lockpick somewhere, but you do need one to get in.

Another good source of 2mm EC ammo is the patrolling Enclave guards around Navarro. Not quite the bonanza you can clean up in that cave, but the ones that carry gauss weapons usually have a few clips worth, plus you can unload their guns for a few more rounds.

Edit: What Goumindong is spot on, I'm pretty sure. The difference between FO1 and FO2 is that in FO2, late game enemies get MUCH stronger. They have far more hp and much better armor than anything in FO1. The Gauss rifle's ability to punch through all but the best is very nice. You can empty a pulse rifle into a high level floater or wannaningo all day and do crap for damage. They can even shrug off minigun bursts (Any highly armored target can take burst fire like it's popcorn). A gauss rifle, on the other hand, will splatter them all over the place.

I'm downloading the 3 video interviews (each file is 10m or so). More interesting is the Q&A session with them that they posted yesterday.

Here's a tidbit to convince you guys to login:
Q: Is this another Oblivion but with a Fallout theme?

A: In short: no. Sure, Fallout 3 plays primarily from a first-person perspective like Oblivion, and conversations with NPCs use a similar style of dialogue tree, but combat, questing, character creation and most importantly the tone and style of the gameplay shares more in common with Fallout 1 and 2 than Oblivion.

When that hits the open web, the guys over at NMA are going to freak right on out.
