The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I have heard from people that loved UA that the new characters were just clones of existing ones, though. So I wouldnt even pay $10 for it.
You've, uh, you've heard wrong. Short of Sabertooth and a few random moves from the other characters they aren't copies. Hell even those moves that do the same thing get different effects/animations.
They've openly commented that they were already working on Marketplace content before the game was even completed. That's market-babble for "we're holding some stuff back so we can charge more for it later".
That doesn't mean they would have made that content if they couldn't get extra money for it. There is a good chance they wouldn't have developed it, or at least not as much of it, if they weren't going to get more money out of it. Without DLC they might only have a 10 month development cycle for the full release, but with the money they know they can make off of DLC they can stretch that to 12 months. This, obviously, isn't always the case but it is something to keep in mind.
I have no problems with DLC, because often games get updated with extra content (Gears had a huge update that added Annex and fixed some issues). DLC is extra content. It's optional. You don't need to spend 800 MS points to purchase the ending to your game.
What I do have a problem with is Bungie's latest DLC, because you can't play most of the game modes online without it. The same thing happened with GRAW when Chapter 2 was released, although it was slightly different that time.
So I say, as long as I don't need to pay for content to have full access to the game I bought (that it is, full access to the features it was released with), I'm cool. But if things like new maps that are required for math-making and the like, I'm definitely not going to support it.
I'm always pretty shocled that the theme packs or whatever you call the skins cost actual money. Shit like that should always be free. It's promotional material!!
I whole heartedly agree with you there, I understand it takes time and work to create them, but not enough to justify paying money for. It would be equivalent to having to pay for screen savers and desktop images. Also, there's no way to preview the item before you buy it, which I think is pretty silly in itself, you could go on-line and check them out I suppose, but that should be a feature built into the system already.
I agree though that pics and themes should all be free. Or unlock them with achievements. Then it would mean something when my opponent saw my pink ghost avatar: that I'd beaten Challenge 2 in Pac-Man CE or some such.
That'd be pretty cool, I've only encountered one game so far that has done that (Outpost Kaloki as seen in my gamer pic). Though it was easy to obtain, so your achievement idea would make it more worthwhile and rare to see.
To me, it's all context. If they're releasing DLC the day the game hits shelves? That's bad. But to plan out another episode and announce it before the game is released - i.e. something that takes some substantial, additional dev time, then it's not exploitative of the market at all. Like the GTA IV thing. I'm fine with that.

Yeah...
And that's only up to last November...
