The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
A Take-Two spokesperson has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the episodic content planned for Grand Theft Auto IV will be exclusively released for the Xbox 360.
Eh. Thats the PLANNED episodic content. Also, if the game is shortened in any way that its not a brilliant, detailed and nigh-endless game in exchange for DLC, then it can go fuck itself anyway.

I'm not sure what your point is about it being the planned episodic content. I mean...the use of the word planned is odd. If they don't have any planned DLC content then they don't...have any plans for any DLC content.
It'll be hard to say if the game was shortened do to episodic content, was HL2? Even if it isn't shortened, though, people will bitch that it was because this is the internet.
I doubt MS would pay $50million dollars for anything less than GTA IV itself being an exclusive title. So, no, probably not true. Unless MAYBE they pledged to spend $50million on advertising the game...but I doubt it.
I always thought there was just going to be different DLC depending on which system you bought, so there's be xbox360 exclusive AND PS3 exlusive DLC. Gamesindutry.biz are super reputable, so unless the Take-two rep had a brain fart, I guess that fell through.
We've since confirmed that an exclusivity deal between Namco and Microsoft is very close to fruition, likely to be announced at the E3 Media and Business Summit in July.

"A telling exchange during last week's Take Two earnings conference call may have revealed a sizable price tag for the Xbox 360's exclusive rights to Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable content. During the call, Pacific Crest Securities Analyst Evan Wilson inquired about a $25 million "deferred revenue chunk associated with the episodic content on Xbox 360." Take Two CFO Lainie Goldstein responded that the money was for "the first episodic content package that's supposed to go out ... in March of '08" and that another $25 million was being deferred for the second content pack, to be released later in fiscal '08."
25 mil an "episode"
and katamari is said to be an esclusive for xbla... dont know how its still coming.. please elighten me

$50 mill for downloadable content. These downloadable contents are going to be huge.
25 mill for one, and another 25 mill for the second dlc.
Yikes. For that price, you be expecting that DLC to at least double the total length of the game.
Which will certainly irk PS3 GTA fans.
well microsoft really wants to be the king of the castle.
I'm guessing they're hoping this will shoot up the HD sales and console sales through the roof. and it just might.
I thought the new content was going to be on a seperate new island or something.
It could be a pretty big deal, and a major win for MS. If they are throwing $50 million at it, it must be a big deal.
Although, I'm kinda skeptical of the new GTA, as much as I'm sure it will rock, not having the ability to jump over buildings / throw trucks / enjoy multiplayer carnage etc a la Crackdown might feel kinda... dull. Though I'm very much looking forward to where the story will go, sounds interesting.
But yeah, 360 extra content + achievements = LOL Sony? Wonder how the graphics will compare between the two powerhouse platforms.
Ah, but GTA replaces Super Powers with Story and a Real Sense of Humor.
Fair exchange, at least with Crackdown's set of superpowers.
I'd have to agree...and I don't even like GTA that much.
Indeed, some of the GTA missions over the years have been genious, can't wait to see what they come up with this time. (Although I hope there are no bloody remote control helicopters!!)
is this really news? hasn't there been talk of this since GTA IV was first officially announced? maybe this is the first 100% official confirmation, but its hardly a shocking revelation.
thought the $50Mil figure certainly allows for rampant speculation as to the size and scope of the DLC and just how much its likely to help MS/hurt Sony.
I think they need a new word now. Every GTA, from III to present, has used the word "EXCLUSIVE!" in big shiny letters to advertise it. Only for it to be everywhere else within a year. There has never been anything "exclusive" about the GTA franchise for years. The only reason we probably never will see the "XXXX City Stories" outside the PS2 is because they sucked shit and its not worth the energy to port. This DLC stuff? It'll either be on the PS3 in a year, or released on the disc and billed as a "Special Edition".
Exclusive? Sure you are. :winky:

I think GTAIV is moving in the opposite direction. Something about it almost reminds me of Sin City. Not the color or lighting but just the dark, dramatic undertones. The music from Philip Glass only adds to the feeling.

There were no $50 million involved in those deals.
At 25 million a pop and something like half a year lead time, each, I'd be surprised if they weren't considerable additions to the game. Probably not engine updates but new storylines start to finish might not be out of the question.

This is interesting; if it means what I think it means, the DLC for the game will be huge. The more focus placed on DLC the better, as far as I'm concerned.
I'd bet money on GTA IV being Vista-only when it comes to PC, and having the DLC packs available for it as either one combined expansion or two seperate ones.
Wow. Its gonna suck to be buying that DLC content if it cost them 25 mill. They're going to want to make that money back in spades.
With this move, Microsoft is paying $50 million to create the idea that their platform hosts the definitive version of what could be the most popular game of this console generation. They are not looking to make all of the money back via the DLC. The DLC is bait to secure sales of other games, accessories, RROD repairs after 18 months of console use, and everything else that comes with increasing 360 installed base. The DLC will be comfortably priced for what it delivers, and Take Two will probably still make the most from direct sales.
Still, I'm not sure this is as smart as Microsoft thinks. GTA sells like nuts because it is mainstream. So mainstream, in fact, that it dips into the Core 360 users, into the people still using dial-up, into the people who would have no fucking clue what we mean by DLC or episodic content. How will this be marketed? Take Two will likely keep it out of their advertising because they are shipping the game for two systems and will have no interest in making one version appear inferior. That leaves Microsoft with some sort of odd spin-off ad campaign to convince Joe Consumer that he needs to play GTA on X-Box 360 so he can connect to the internets and pay to download a new episode (fast speech at the end says he needs one of them there hard drives).
The only people this is guaranteed to sway are core gamers, and most were already leaning to the 360 version because it seems to be the lead SKU and will have achievements. In the end, this might just be Microsoft shelling out an enormous pile of cash to keep their stranglehold on what, in the scheme of things, amounts to a large niche that is not getting them anywhere in the long run. And frankly, as part of that niche, I would rather this $50 million go towards making amends to everyone stuck in Red Ring purgatory. I treated my X-Box 360 like a newborn baby for 18 months, and all I got was a $100+ bill just to get it running again. Considering that, I might be playing GTAIV on my PS3, because heaven knows I need to keep the miles off my 360 if I want it to, you know, work.
Hey, Wraith260, I thought I was going crazy---I would swear that when they first started making announcements about GTA:IV they were saying the DLC was going to be for the 360 exclusively. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that, or I'd be losing my mind.
Both versions of the game (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) will likely be identical, but the Xbox 360 version will have exclusive downloadable episodic [sizeable] content. Rockstar have now spent over 3 years developing the game, and Dan Houser compares the leap from GTA III to GTA IV, to the leap from GTA to GTA III.
I'm not too bothered about it personally (though I'm a PS3 owner), but I'm sure this will be a big blow to Sony.
i know that feeling Catarina. there's been dozens of times in the past when i've wished i'd saved a link/quote/screen-cap of some article or quote so i can look back and prove i'm not imagining things.
You know, for all we know, the $50 million could come from the sheer profit Microsoft have made via themes and gamerpics purchased thus far on Marketplace, has been planned way in advance, and will have no bearing on the price of any GTA IV DLC.
But it will be interesting to see how this all plays out in a few months.

On A Roll, Or, How Microsoft Secured Yet Another Exclusive--Beautiful Katamari--From Namco Bandai
And wii as well. As far as I can tell, the "xbox360 exlusive" rumour started at the namco gamers day, where only the 360 version of BK was shown.
Edit: well shit, reading above... ouch. Wonder if they'll try and grab soul calibur 4 next.
