Gitaroo Man: Weekend 60 Minute Challenge!

edited August 2007 in Games and Technology
Please see old thread here for the general gist:
http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=21932

What's the point in a new thread for this? Well, Lave II got himself jailed for being a naughty boy, and now we can't really edit the OP without hassling an admin.

Below is the op, detailing what goes on, the post below that is the current week's game and the post below that the results from games gone by!

So, without further ado (Stolen from original op but slimmed down!):

Lave's Sunday Traditional Game Club - of Great Repute - For the busy Penny-Arcade Gentleman*.

* and Gentlewoman

Why?

Getting older sometimes means less time to play games, folks like myself sometimes only get an hour or two a week (if that). The idea is to set a challenge (or two or three) on an older/classic game and play this for the hour.

And to be honest this thread is probably aimed at the older gentleman, who's time poor, and money adequate. A Gentleman's* Club if you will.

Get to the point! What is it?

It's like a Book Club - but for "Classic" games. And with a time limit. So it isn't hard to join in.
  • Each week we choose a "traditional" game amongst ourselves.
  • Each week we set challenges. Typically "Get a High Score" and "Get as far as you can"
  • That weekend you play the game.
  • After NO MORE THAN ONE HOUR you make a note of your score etc.
  • You get back on with your busy life (and/or keep playing).
  • Come Monday we get together and boast, discuss and start over again.

This way we all get to compete in a way that levels the playing field.

What it isn't:
  • It isn't a [game on] thread
  • It isn't a thread for on-line games.
  • It isn't a thread for long, complicated games.
  • It isn't a thread for games with a (proper) story.
  • This isn't a thread for the "latest and best" games.

However:
  • It is a thread for one player games.
  • It is a thread for simple hi-score games.
  • It is a thread for games that will give you that nice sense of achievement and satisfaction after "only" an hour of play.
  • It is a thread for (re)discovering interesting missed classics and taking chances.

IMPORTANT

Please don't post screen caps for older games, it hints at a way of playing games that's greatly frowned upon here. Pictures of you playing the game on your tv are pretty much fine (but not necessary, everything is based on trust!)

PAST AND FUTURE WEEKS GAMES - WITH SCORES
    PAST WEEKS

WEEK ONE: 12th-13th May: Sonic the Hedgehog (8bit)

    Format: Master System

    Challenges:

    1) I remember Sega Power running a competition to see how quick you could complete the first level . I discovered there was a secret trick on the ramp that helped. I actually beat the winner of that competition - but my mum wouldn't develop the camera film I used to photograph the tv as proof. So this gives me a second chance to win.
    2) Hi-score challenge
    3) How far can you get?
    4) TSR's extreme bonus challenge: In Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for the Sega Master System/Game gear, it's possible to get an extra life just prior to the final boss in Sky Zone Act 3. Post a screenshot of yourself getting the hidden extra life (hint: I use the word "hidden" loosely) and explain how you did it.

    Results:

    1st Act Speed Run
    1) 19s Area & Lave
    3) 20s Jam Warrior
    4) 22 secs Ben0207
    4) 26s Mr Grinch

    Hi Score Challenge
    1) 317,500 LewieP

    1) Completed (2 Chaos Emeralds) - 55mins - mattclem
    5) Sky Brain - Mr Grinch
    6) Labyrinth Act 3 - Lave
    7) Labyrinth Act 2 - area

As ruler of the thread I declare that LewieP can dish presents out however he likes (or not at all), and anyone who that annoys is a big stupid doodoo head.

Ok, we're a tad rushed for this week so we need to pick a game and get the op updated.

    My suggestions would be:

    Doom
    Donkey Kong (Nes)
    Super Mario Land (Nes)
    Donkey Kong Country
SimCity (Seems odd but you can get a shit load done in an hour)
Street Fighter 2 (Set a standard difficulty level, how long to complete in certain time, how many continues etc)
Mortal Kombat (How long to complete, how many fatalities, total score (MK keeps a running score))

Anyone have any further suggestions? Anyone think any of those are great/shit?

Speak up people! I'll be updating the op tonight with whatever is decided upon!

My suggestion would be don't rush it. Skip this weekend giving people a decent chance to source the chosen game and pick up where we left off next week.

Just a suggestion, I enjoy the thread but not to the point of putting any work into it :P

Meh. I don't have many of those games.

    SMB3 is good.
SimCity would be interesting. There's that free online version for cheapskates like myself.
I'd suggest Cave Story, but I don't think it really fits into the whole 1 hour thing.
Any one else have Vectorman I/II? *Waves around $10 smash pack disks*

As long as it's games I have access to, I'd love to participate in this.

    As for suggestions:
Donkey Kong '94 (GB) What's the best score you can get? How far can you make it?
Punch-Out!! (NES) How fast can you beat Glass Joe? What's the highest score you can get on a single boxer? How far can you make it?
Trauma Center (DS/Wii) It's a newer game, but very arcadey in spirit. How many operations can you clear? How quickly can you beat the first mission? What's the highest score you can get on the first missionl? Can you beat all of the X missions without failing on any of them?
Super Mario Bros. (NES/Super NES) How quickly can you beat level one? What's the highest score you can get on level one? How far can you make it?

    We need Gitaroo Man.

Next best thing to redoing Rez for the music gamers.

I think a lot more people here own Rez than Gitaroo Man.

Also, PC gaming is right out until I replace my sound card, and that's not for another month at least.

Gitaroo Man has a PSP version, so it's a bit more accessible now than Rez if someone wants to get in.

And almost no one responded to the Rez challenge, so I'm skeptical about how many people here have it.

Then again, both are pretty obscure by mainstream standards.

Pretty much. I'd love to own Rez though and I looked into it a little. Seems I will have to pay through the nose for a copy of my own.

    How about Metal Slug 2?

Well, Game Quest Direct has Rez and Gitaroo Man both at $40 new...

Maybe I'll ask someone for Gitaroo Man for my birthday.

Hey, any of you guys wanna buy Gitaroo Man for my birthday?

Okey doke, interest seems to have been renewed in this thread, Lave II -will- be happy :)

I have no objections to running the Rez challenge again if people want, I've actually yet to play it! So if someone could come up with a decent challenge or two, that'd be awesome. Otherwise games we've had suggested up to now are:

    -Gametap games
    -Super Mario Bros 3
    -Gitaroo Man
    -Batman (NES)
    -Actraiser (SNES) (Professional Mode)
    -Xexyz (NES)
-Wonderboy in MonsterLand (Sega Master System)
    -Adventure Island 2 (NES)
    -Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)
    -Ninja Gaiden (NES)
    -Marble Maddness (NES)
    -Kickle Cubicle (NES)
    -Starfox 64
    -SimCity
    -Gradius V
    -Ristar
    -Donkey Kong '94
    -Punch Out
-Trauma Center (I dislike this idea, not because it's a bad idea but BECAUSE THEY STILL HAVEN'T RELEASED IT IN MY COUNTRY. DAMN YOU PAL!)
    -Super Mario Bros 1
    -Katamari
-I have not forgotten Metal Slug 2
    -Warning Forever

Previously we've tried to keep it to old games, to help people either re-live an old friend, or discover and old classic, but I've no objections to going towards more recent games if folks want.

I have a prize for this week too.

The prize is Psychonauts (Pal, Xbox)

Edit: I suggest Warning forever, it's awesome, and freeware, and good for high score challenge

How about a speedrun of the original DOOM, episode 1?

EDIT: No, that wouldn't work. Most of us (including me) haven't played it in years, so it would take multiple hours to get through. Oh well. :P

Gitaroo man was last suggested and has been also suggested multiple times. I have never played it, don't own it and probably won't be buying it :)

But, if someone could suggest some challenges, I'll get an op created and we can have a challenge put up. We'll do Res again next week if there's a calling for it.
