OK, but it seems kind of obvious that if you take ANY comic's really early work, they're not gonna be very good. Look at Seinfeld's early work; it's the same stage persona that we've all seen, just it's not as refined and it's delivered with less skill and confidence.
It seems unfair to go "he's not good without his character" because his character is his own creation. His character is an integral part of what he has created and used to make his act work. He built that character specifically for this reason.
