PAX-goers,
I'm not sure if the community has covered this before, but I wanted to bring it up about PAX this year. Since we are using hotels in Downtown Seattle, I want to remind you all about proper hotel etiquette with an example.
This year at Sakura-Con, two hotels refused to offer discount deals with the convention because of hotel-overpacking issues, and unruly behavior. If you stuffed more than a reasonable five people in one two-bed hotel room, the management is going to get pissed. On top of that, they don't tolerate partying unless you rent out a large room (like a meeting room or something) and keep it reasonable. These are hotels that were built in the eighties or older, people. We don't have robust soundproofing or easy carpeting to clean.
Because of overstuffing in hotel rooms in 2006, Sakura-Con saw some of its attendees tossed out onto the street and the discount agreements nullified with no negotiations for the future. We don't want that to happen here at PAX - impressions are important in Seattle, and we don't want to see problems flying up and down Pike Street.
I don't want to stress this repeatedly to get it through to some of our more inebriated fellows, but with a lot of people needing a place to crash at PAX, it would be a good idea to consider the point of this message: Don't stuff more than five people into a hotel room, or there will likely be hell on earth. Same goes for partying - this isn't the Hilton we're talking about in Belleuve in '05. Those guys were very lenient and flexible - they were into the video game spirit. Here in Seattle? Not so much. They are more for professionalism. Plus the Seattle fire codes are a hell of a lot more strict, and people take this crap seriously.
Remember, you're not the only ones renting out the hotel rooms here in Seattle - other people visiting Seattle for other purposes will be renting a room on your floor, a floor above, or a floor below you. So partying isn't a good idea unless you want to see a couple of SPD officers greeting you in front of three half-naked partygoers. Partying is for the bars and grills we've got in the Westlake District, so look alive - there's the Fox Sports Network Bar n' Grill, there's Gameworks across the street from the con - you want to party after-hours, crash at those venues. As well as any other locations you'd care to find that doesn't have a bed and costs you $150 between five people for a weekend.
That concludes my message: Be a responsible hotel tenant/renter, and party responsibly here in Seattle, and you'll have a good PAX '07.
I'm pretty sure Robert and the gang would agree with me on this.
Signed,
Kato

Therefore, Sealab Party goes off without a hitch.
And so, I answer the clarion call of my foreposters...
ALL HAIL SEALAB!
ALL HAIL SEALAB
If people want to throw a room party then have at it, just heed warnings from the front desk for noise complaints. They have to give you like 2 warnings before they call the cops anyway.
Granted parties arent endorsed by PA but if people want to do something on their own terms...
The big issue in seattle is room stuffing I agree. They can throw you out with no warning for that, or just charge a lot more on your bill.
Just dont do that and all is well
Sheraton is the most PAX-heavy hotel and they're in the midst of an expansion that will more than double their capacity. The goal next year is to fit EVERYONE in that one hotel. A total buyout. This would be a Good Thing because we'll have the entire place to ourselves. But we won't be able to do that unless we leave a good impression this year with every hotel.
And I think we will. Recruit has it right: PAX-goers are the best attendees on Earth. Our exhibitors said so. Everyone in Bellevue hotel management said so. The Meydenbauer folks even said that they--amazingly--didn't have any to do anything by way of repairs/repainting after our show. You guys were more courteous and respectful than any of their other attendees, including the National Dentist Association. I trust you guys to have fun, and not piss anyone off.
So: have fun, and don't piss anyone off.
-Mike
OH! And also, this year a few exhibitors are throwing parties at bars and venues all 'round downtown Seattle. If partying is your thing, why not do it on a game publisher's dime?
Shouldn't be a problem. Thanks, boss.

This is really cool to read. Thanks for sharing that mike. The national dentist Association part makes me chuckle. Ya-- I think this is why PAX is possibly the coolest collection of people in the entire planet.
Oh, and Hail Sealab
More info is required.
Sealab is not the only room party that's going to be taking place over the course of PAX, not by a long shot. More or less, you've read the exact opposite out of this thread.
Getting kicked out of a hotel is for noob room parties.

SWEET
No doubt. Those dentists can get hella rowdy. Or maybe too many of them slit their throats in their hotel room. If you have seen the Whole 9 Yards, you would know that dentists are very prone to suicide.

I blame their drills.
Pod 6 is jerks. I'm surprised there's no Pod 6 team in Patient Zero.
What day you guys going to be there?
me and jaiden have a SPECIAL DRINK that we will be sure to bring that day.
A very small amount of people who even attend pax read/post in these forums and even then most everyone here knows how not to screw up but yet still have fun. Just like the majority of pax attendees.
because on their dime means they'll buy you one cocktail and then make you pay $10 a drink for the rest of the night, duh
I agree with the above statement and have thus quoted, subscribing to the good man's newsletter.
haha so true.
i didn't realize my mom was posting on the forums to teach me responsibility. sweet lord she better have packed peanut butter and jelly with all that yammering. ooo snap.
now with attitude away. of course people will be careful. if you have never left your house before and or never stayed in a hotel overnight, please stay indoors during the night events of PAX.
p.s. the blonde at the Pirates! booth. kinda hot.
ALL HAIL SEALAB
I figure alcohol at gameworks = game developer party likely.
