I finally played a PSP and it was pretty rad

So over the weekend I actually got to spend some time with a PSP. I'd seen it in the past, touched it from time to time, and had spent a few seconds with some kiosks.

It's a pretty groovy piece of hardware, isn't it? I mean I always of the opinion that games that play well on a console are perhaps not the best material for a handheld, but its not like the hardware demands that this is the approach taken by developers. Setting aside all issues related to software FOR the PSP ... it is one damn fine piece of hardware, isn't it?

But I don't know if I want one yet. Hmmm. Only so much room for games in my bedside table.

it was (is?) a great peice of hardware that has a lot of potential. i don't regret selling it when i did for my DS. at the time i had owned about 7 games and ended up selling every single one except Lumines within a month of originally getting it. the software department is getting better but not to the point that i want to get one again.

the only thing i really miss is the homebrew community. PSP had some amazing programs for it.

The kicker is I was playing some ghetto ATV offroad game. I have no doubt it is not regarded as a platform seller by anyone.

But it was a total hoot. And it felt really cool to have graphics that nice and smooth in my hands.

I don't have a whole lot of games for my PSP, but Wipeout Pure and Hot Shots Golf Open Tee -- two launch titles, IIRC -- still amaze me with how nice they look and play. It really is a portable PS2, and as much as a lot of people poop on the notion of console games on the go there's a large segment of people for which portability is really all they want. I like being able to sit on the bus every morning or hit up a coffee shop and essentially play PS2 games no matter where I am. Plus, DJ Max Portable 2.

I've had mine for a while now and I enjoyed the hell out of Daxter, R&C, and some of the RPG's that have come out for it, but it's been put away for more hands on time with my DS. That looks like it will change in the near future though as I have seen some titles coming up that I can't wait to get my hands on. I just hope the list of good titles increases greatly in the future. There is so much potential, but little of it seems to have been used yet.

    but anyway

i got one for christmas and after asking for game recommendations on it on some other forum i got a bunch of naysays saying the DS is better and wish i got a DS, then i realized these people were fucking morons after i got a DS and enjoy my PSP and DS equally with their many games.

I've got the DA Open Edition firmware on mine, enabling all homebrew.

Let me tell you, having a device with a bitchin' screen that can play movies, mp3s, PSP games, PSX games, SNES roms, and GBA roms, is pure awesome.

I've been working my way through Final Fantasy Anniversary and Megaman Powered Up, with occasional jumps into Link to the Past and Metroid Fusion. I bus to work, so I have plenty of time for portable games, lol.

There's plenty of great games for the PSP. Riviera, Gitaroo Man, Valkryie Profile, Lumines 1 & 2, Ys(port, but still)... FFT, Crisis Core, Disgaea on the way... DJ MAX Portable(import), etc.

It's still picking up steam, and when it does, it'll be a must-own console.

I did the same thing but I picked up another one about a month ago and I'm impressed. As much as I hate to say this, it's superior in every way to the DS, in my opinion.

The problem with the PSP is that "out of the box" it's not that great of a system, especially when you factor in game availability and the price of the console and games. It's when you start looking at homebrew and some of the stuff that we're not allowed to mention here on PA that the console comes into it's own and becomes a good investment.

    Whoops...sorry about that.

Regarding the PSP, as a JRPG fan it seems to have a better potential line-up than the DS, which makes me happy:

Tales of the World (released today)
    Brave Story
    Final Fantasy Tactics PSP
    Disgaea PSP
Tales of Eternia (import from Europe)

Plus it's got an out of the box web browser and the ability to play PSPs and Video. I would suggest getting at least a 4 GB memory stick if you're going to be dealing with movies and/or music since the one supplied is tiny.

The only odd thing I've run into is with the Sony brand spare battery and charger. The battery seems just slightly bigger than the battery that comes with the PSP so the back cover doesn't isn't as snug when I'm using it. Anyone else have this issue?

I would get a PSP so hard if the D-pad didn't suck all kinds of ass. I love what it can potentially do, but those big chunky buttons are no way to control a video game, I just can't get past that, I need to be able to hit more than one direction at one time. Yes, I might have girly thumbs, but that thing is just painful and horrifying to use. I can deal with anything except that D-pad.

Well I am glad it is not just me, but seriously, how hard can it be to make a D-pad that isn't a bag of wank? It is literally the only thing between me and a the purchase of a PSP, but four individual buttons are just not acceptable in 2007.

Same here. I bought one at launch, and have always had a great game to play on it. The system really is great, and oddly enough I haven't touched my DS in months. The selection of games on it just doesn't compare. I know I'll probably get flamed for that comment, but that's just how it is for me.

Hey. Guys. Remember our piracy and emulation rule, ok?

Quick question, what's the rules on legal emulation?

For example I bought Amiga Forever ages ago to play all my old Amiga games, it means I have the legit roms and disk images. (well, technically I didn't even need to buy it.. i've still got my Amiga 1200 kicking about)

I'd kill for an Amiga handheld emulator, hell.. i'd murder for some classic Amiga games on virtual console too. I'd probably quite happily pay through the nose to play Chaos Engine, Speedball 2 etc on my Wii. It's the convenience of it, you have the urge to play an old miggy game but you don't want to dig out the Amiga connect it all up, find the disks and then play it.. you just want to click on a button on the wii menu. (laziness in older age)

    Anyway, where was I?

Oh yes, when this slim psp comes out it'd be killer to run UAE on it. Probably kill the battery life though, all emulators tend to be high cpu usage, plus the Amiga was always a really hard machine to emulate because of the large custom chipset.

Are we allowed to mention playing PSX games on a PSP? You can do so by ripping your own games. You don't even need to obtain Hot Shots for PSX/PS3 download (legally or otherwise) anymore to do it, so it's legit.

I find the PSP gets a perhaps unfair amount of derision. It is a pretty neat piece of hardware, all things considered. I love a good LOLSONY as much as the next guy but I like my PSP. Perhaps not as much as my DS, but owning both means I get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

The PSP is one gloriously good looking machine, I agree. If it had only been released with dual analog sticks I'm sure I would have bought it by now. I just, man, I really can't stand using the Dpad for much of anything nowadays. I served my time on the N64 with PD and GE, I'm not going back to a mono-stick existence.

I have also had my PSP since launch, and I have not regretted my purchase in the slightest. My PSP has probably seen more playtime than my DS Lite and I have way more PSP games than DS titles. Wipeout Pure and Lumines gave me tons of quality playtime since launch, and more good games keep coming out for the system. Killzone: Liberation has taken up a fair amount of my time recently, I love that game since it reminds me of Crusader: No Remorse.

I know a lot of DS lovers IRL and it pisses me off every time I hear one of them say "But the PSP has no good games!" BULLSHIT. It may not have games of interest to them, but to say that they are not good is a ignorant thing to say. Also, I may be ignorant here myself, but no DS game I know of has downloadable content. Wipeout Pure has doubled in tracks thanks to free downloadable content, Killzone added a infrastructure MP and more SP Campaign maps with plans for more stuff... Can't say that for the DS.

Yeah, it doesn't help in the original/new game department, but I'm willing to bet there are many people who didn't play the GBA version. I played the GBA version, and couldn't help but buy the game again for its full voice acting and updated visuals and music. Plus, I've wanted to replay the game again, this was a good excuse. Also, with Disgaea coming to the PSP, hopefully some other good (and new/original) NIS games will follow.
