Who would win in a fight between Mario and Sonic?

I was talking with a coworker and the subject of video games came up. Then the subject of video game fights came up. The first match that we couldn't decide was Mario vs. Sonic. I think Sonic would win. He thinks Mario would win.
Sonic's Strengths: Fast, Invincible (assuming he starts the fight with even 1 ring)
Mario's Strengths: Limited invinciblity (with star), Fire Flower
Here's how I claim the fight goes:
Sonic starts with 1 ring and Mario starts as Super Mario.
Sonic spin dashes Mario, who is now standard Mario.
Mario uses his invincibility star right before Sonic can spin dash him again.
Sonic's ring goes flying, but he is able to retrieve it due to his superior speed.
Mario's invincibility wears off, Sonic spin dashes him a third time, and Mario dies.
The end.
My coworker offered no rebuttal other than calling me a retard.
What do you think?

The world will never know, but we'll get to see if the fat plumber can beat Sonic in Olympic sports soon. The real question though is.... do we care?

Not that I actually have an opinion on this matter, but you seem to be regarding the spin dash as an unstoppable, undodgeable attack.
I can understand not giving mario some of the special powers he gets through the course of a game, (flying, fireballs, that sort of thing) but you seem to have left out his ability to jump.

Mario smiled wryly as he leaned over Sonic's shoulder to look at the computer screen. He gently caressed his lover's cheek, then reached past him to turn off the display. "There's no-a need, my blue-a lova." Mario's hands fell down to Sonic's exposed nipples and tweaked them both playfully. Sonic closed his eyes and relaxed back into Mario's overalls. He could feel Mario's tumescence growing, positioned right between his shoulder blades.
Sonic looked up into Mario's eyes. "Can we use the mushroom this time?"

Mario doesn't have fights. Only slaughterings.
Mario could just wear spikes on his outfit, and Sonic would die instantly.

Mario fought back. He hit Sonic with the invincibility star. Then Sonic killed him.
Then Mario was revied with a 1-up Mushroom.
As for his jump attack, mario can easily dodge it, since it is easily telegraphed and cannot change direction unless it first hits its intended target.
The spin dash can easily be jumped over, since it has a startup time and sticks to the ground. at farther range, he can jump while in spin, and that would have a better chance of hitting mario with the randomness of being able to jump or stay on the ground.
sonic can dodge mario's fireballs. sonic's biggest weakness is running into terrain because of his speed, or running into an enemy while not in spin.
I would think mario would win, with my only reason being that mario has more "toys." all sonic can do is spin attack and jump attack; his only tactic is hit and run. mario can use metal form to stop sonic in his tracks. then sonic would be at melee range, and have a slow startup time. mario would whoop ass. also a well timed racoon tail whip would stop sonic. or a jump stomp.
mario could also bring the battle underwater to negate the speed advantage.
So fast, in fact, that even though this particular attack requires a good 2 seconds of charge-up time, during which Mario could be increasing the distance between the two of them, there is not enough time for even a battle hardened veteran like Mario to react and jump before Sonic closes the entire distance between them.
