If you get Divine Divinity, realize it's more of a spinoff than a straight clone. It plays more like an Ultima or something. Also, stick with it past the first town/dungeon. If I recall, you're locked in until you finish that dungeon, which kind of sucks. After that the world opens up wide and you can go wherever you want.
So good. Diablo + Ultima = Divine Divinity.
Stay away from the sequel though...not as good.

Fate is great fun, but installing it and dealing with the fact that you'll have to ignore the cries from your spyware detector that pop up forever more is a sticky point.
Couldnt you uninstall the part that was considered spyware? As in it was separate from the game.

Right, I should have mentioned that. At first, you have to do the whole "rid the dungeon of the evil" routine, basically something ripped from D2 (as if enough hasn't been ripped from that game), but then after you do that the world opens up like you said.
Also, I heard a rumor about how the ex-Blizzard North guys have a working version of an MMO that plays just like D2. Imagine, an actual MMO in the style of D2. They plan to actually release it from what I know.
You mean the ex-Blizzard North guys that founded Flagship Studios and are making Hellgate: London?
edit: and Mythos
Yes, those guys. The network guy here said he read an article a couple weeks ago about how they have an MMO game in the vein of D2, and they all play it around the office, and they said it's fun as hell and they want to release it as a full game. I should see if he can give me a link
Yeah, that's Mythos. They built it with the Hellgate engine, as sort of a proof of concept. It's in closed beta right now, and is going to be released for free, eventually

Was Beyond Divinity that bad? I always thought that the whole "soulbound" deal with the death knight sounded pretty interesting. What was it that made the game so much worser than the first Divinity?
I'd highly suggest the demo of Titan Quest before getting it. I found the game fun for a while, but just got bored of it. It was missing the charm of Diablo, no random maps and I found most of the skills just lacking.
I'll 2nd this.
I did the exact same thing... There's something about it that doesn't feel right... I don't know what it is.
It's slower than Diablo 2, and also there's physics instead of blood and cartoon monsters instead of nightmare horrors. I mean, I'm fond of Titan Quest, but those are the main differences and they're bigger than they sound. Oh! And the story is totally weak even by Diablo standards, and oh. my. god. the voice acting. ><
If you aren't looking for the grim feel of D2, though, some of the environments in Titan Quest are heart-stoppingly gorgeous.
Alien Shooter: Vengeance was actually pretty decent for the $5 it cost me. It's isometric and you gain levels/skills like diablo. The whole game is pretty mindless but fun enough to buy on the cheap. I wasted a couple nights on it before I got bored with it.

Benjamin Franklin used foil covered window glass to create a capacitor. He then attempted to kill a turkey with the stored charge. Instead, he knocked himself out. Franklin later wrote, "I tried to kill a turkey but nearly succeeded in killing a goose."
I'll second Titan Quest. For I bought TQ + the expansion for $30 on Steam and it seems worth it so far. It feels a lot like Diablo without random dugeons. Which I actually like. The random areas in Diablo really didn't do it for me. I like the handcrafted nature of TQ's world. The voice acting is pretty bad, but the skill system is pretty customizable. Killing dudes and sending them flying across the screen is also very rewarding. I just wish they had gone for an M rating and added some gore.
Fate is wicked amounts for fun for a non-mainstream title. Divine Divinity is freaking awesome but it's got more rpg than most Diablo clones. It's also very easy to break the game (read: make a godly character which rapes everything). Alien Shooter: Vengeance is short & shallow but I've finished it over 10 times and I honestly can't tell you why. Maybe ripping the life out of 50+ aliens with a minigun firing explosive rounds while wearing power armor is just that much fun. I want a sequel so bad.
Oh, and before anyone even thinks about recommending Silverfall...no, just...no.
Uh. The best way to play Titan Quest, so far as I've found, is with the xMAX Mod. Monsters upon monsters upon monsters. The only areas you won't be completely beset with beasties and madly drinking health potions are in the really large towns.
Dungeon Siege II was also a serious step up from its predecessor, though it lacked for a good Yoda mod. Yoda made DSOne a hell of a lot of fun.
Fate is great fun, but installing it and dealing with the fact that you'll have to ignore the cries from your spyware detector that pop up forever more is a sticky point.
Divine Divinity is amazing and everyone should play it at least once.
Titan Quest is fun, but the item system blows, in my opinion. There are no randomly generated rare items and the set/unique items are really the only things worth picking up. Play the normal game and you'll probably never find unique items you can use. Mod the game so the drop more often, and suddenly they're the only thing worth picking up. It's very pretty though.
In case this post about the item system throws anyone off of Titan Quest, I feel I should point out that there are randomly generated rare items using the prefix/suffix system, and at higher difficulties they become more powerful than uniques.
So there were these two GBA games that were Diablo clones. The first one was said to be just kinda okay, and the second one was said to be quite good. I always meant to get the second one so I could get some Diablo-esque action on the go, but now I can't even remember what the hell they're called. If someone can remind me what these two games were called I'll be ordering it online pretty much immediately.
The title is like something Sword, or something.
EDIT: it was Shining Soul and Shining Soul 2

Crap almighty, WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS?
Good or bad, I'm shocked none of us have given the thing a shot.
Please someone get that game it looks like hot shit. If I had $45 right now I'd jump on it, alas, I do not. Someone get it and post if its good because it looks awesome.
Someone please get it and let me know what it's like.. I'm dying for a hack and slash that is one-up on Diablo 2 (which is to say - none I've heard of yet).
Also, reviews put it around ~80% so its not overwhelming. I never tried it though, because of its copy protection.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
Also, reviews put it around ~80% so its not overwhelming. I never tried it though, because of its copy protection.
Hey, I'm just hoping for something that's not UNDERwhelming. Hell, 80% is much better than I anticipate for a game I've never seen or heard of.
Also: any links to those reviews? I haven't been able to dig up anything, and I want to see what the general comments are re: loot tables, PC performance, single-player longevity, skill trees, and yes, the use of mythology.

Do a search over on GameSpot they've got some previews. Says the game isn't due until August 24th, but I think you can download it now.
edit: Here's the jist of what I read
-4 characters and 4 starting areas. Aztec, Egyptian, Norse, and I forget the other.
-Have to play through all the areas before unlocking the 'final' quest
-Visuals support particle effects, shadows, weather, etc etc
-Online including coop up to 5 people, 6-10 raid-like encounters(do what now), and dueling

In D2, higher level enchanted items were better than uniques, untill they added nightmare and hell level uniques. I remember that specifically being the case in the release version.
Nox is awesome. The graphics are dated. But if you can get past that it is really a treat. I was just playing the demo for Titan Quest 2 nights ago. It seems fun, but I need more time with it.
I'd highly suggest the demo of Titan Quest before getting it. I found the game fun for a while, but just got bored of it. It was missing the charm of Diablo, no random maps and I found most of the skills just lacking.
That's my exact experience with TQ. I even reinstalled when the expansion came out. It was fun to try out the new stuff but it became boring pretty quickly. The lack of a random map feature was a huge omission for me. And something about the treasure system also just felt "off" compared to Diablo 2.

Well, the thing with Diablo was was that pretty much every type of treasure (even white drops) had some sort of value. While unique items were typically the most prized, finding or trading for that elite white sword, or that sword with the perfect amount of sockets for the runeword you want to make kept you playing. Furthermore, it seemed to me in Titan Quest that chests NEVER dropped anything worthwhile. In D2 chests often had items of high value, or at least, often enough to care about and actively seek them out. There was also embuing, the cube, and all sorts of uses for items of all varieties throughout a character's lifespan.
The monsters were the best part of Titan Quest, in my opinion. Tons of different monster types, and all somewhat interesting, usually.

So i picked up fate. I'm having a ball with it, for 20 bucks its a very fun experience!
I like the pet system a whole lot, especially being able to transform it and whatnot.
I found an interesting review that gives the game a couple thumbs up (well, actually a 7.5/10) and makes it sound interesting to boot.
Some choice sections of the review:
It is a generic RPG in many ways, but it doesn't paint itself to be anything but. Loki is one of the few Diablo-clones that I've liked for a long time, it's got a few rough patches (or the code we had did) and might not interest people who're looking for depth of story and breadth of character. This is action and adventure in an ancient world, pure, plain and simple.
Now it is the turn of Loki, a brutal 3rd person "hack and slash" RPG that allows you to take on the role of four distinct heroes: The Norse Warrior, the Aztec Shaman/Priestess, the Egyptian Wizard and a Greek Warrior, who is a balanced melee and ranged fighter. Each one of these heroes comes with a different starting area, three separate Gods for them to worship and perform tasks for, as well as their own quest lines.
Each of your heroes has a diverse set of abilities, skills and magical powers that can be unlocked/bought during the game. You earn XP to advance in levels by performing quests and killing creatures on the fairly large area maps. You also earn various 'deity' points as I call them. For example: Tyr points for the Norse character. These can also be used to upgrade your character with specific abilities based on their particular skill-tree.
Monsters don't respawn either, once they are dead, they stay dead - so you can't farm an area for more XP than you could get by killing everything stone dead.
That about covers the gameplay mechanics for single player, apart from to mention that the game allows you to regenerate your health when your character puts their weapon away and is no longer in combat.
For those of you who like to play with friends, the game supports online and LAN play. You can tackle the SP story with some buddies or you can play a variety of game modes that are similar to death matches, duels and the like.
Looks like I'll be givin' this a shot as soon as time allows.
PS: Pix!
RELEASE DATE: Now if you want to buy it from the Loki website (in English too!), August if you want the physical.
