Sam and Max originated from a comic from the (deranged) mind of Steve Purcell.
The comic details the adventures of a trenchcoated canine and a furry rabbity thing who savagely protect the rights of innocents, under the unassuming moniker of the Freelance Police.
The comic ran for a while, and one day, LucasArts decided to make a point'n'click game based on their exploits.
The rest is history.
Sam and Max don't have much of a predefined agenda. If crime gets in their way, they beat it senseless with the rolled up newspaper of justice.
Occasionally they take on jobs from the ever-disembodied commissioner, such as rescuing Bruno the Bigfoot and Trixie the Giraffe-Necked Girl From Scranton©(the basis of the old PC game).
Since then, they had a
short-lived animated series(aimed at kids, which of course is a natural progression for a comic about a profane trigger-happy crimefighting duo):
(It wasn't that bad, really. And it looks like it actually got released on DVD at one point.)
Correction: it's out now.
LucasArts had planned a second game at one point... and then, it was cancelled.
Until a few months ago, at least.

New adventure game which I haven't played yet, developed by some people who broke away from LucasArts, also created with Steve's assistance.
I've played up to Episode 5 of Sam And Max Season 1, and it gets much better in the late game, and Season 2 is supposedly even better. 1's available in (some) stores now, and 2's episodes are up for grabs online.
But that's not why you should visit their website(though it's a good reason).
You should go there for the
new comics Steve Purcell is doing alongside the game's release, presumably because he has nothing better to do.
Also, this is an awesome book and everyone should own it:
I hear it got reprinted with extra content, but I haven't seen it yet. I still have the original from way way too long ago.
Posts
and sam says "hey, that's funny"
and then max is standing there in a big shirt and shoes and he says "at least it doesn't say anything about pants"
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
Of course, I wouldn't even be able to play the original(with audio) anymore if it weren't for DOSBox.
The lack of the definitive VAs makes me sad, but I still want to play the new one.
"Hey, that gives me an idea..."
One of the first puzzles in the original game, and one that had me stumped for a long time. Hey, I was eight.

No really I can't pick that up.
Are you dense? I can't pick that up.
Read my lips: I. Can't. Pick. That. Up.
I give up. *cry*
*cry*
Max: now you've done it.
"They say she's a seven-foot tall spectre of evil, wandering the highways, wearing a blood caked smock"
"I've got a blood-caked smock"
No, me too.
That was the only time I've ever used a walkthrough for a LucasArts ARG, and it was to figure out that you've got to turn that cat inside out.
But I suck at Grim Fandango's puzzles.
Max takes his helmet off
Sam: You can't do that little buddy. Theres no air on the moon
Max:/takes a big breath
Theres plenty. I guess those moon guys were just too weeny to try.
/Sam and Max rescue moon rat person from being held up.
Max: you can put your hands down now.
rat person:/Talks to Sam
Sam: you can put your hands down now.
rat person:/ Still talking to Sam
Sam: /begins to pummel the guy PUT. YOUR. HANDS. DOWN.
COST ME FIVE HOURS OF MY LIFE
I first tried playing that game when I was 14, I think. I got bored and stopped.
That and Vampire keep tempting me.
Fuck Steam. Now even my lazy ass isn't a guard against impulse purchases.
So. Much. Talking.
I should reinstall it.
edit: oh god where's the sound!
That having been said, I've owned this game for a good 7 or 8 years now as part of a Lucasarts collection but haven't ever played it.
Ahahahaha, god I wish I could play the game right now.
But nooooo, the disc has been MIA for years.

I don't know if even Sam & Max is worth the emotional price of buying Gametap.
They would make a lot of money off of them.

They do.
I signed up for their 99 cent first month special, played all 6 then cancelled.
Best 99 cents I ever spent.
2) I reviewed all six episodes of Season One - it's fantastic and gets progressively better as you get further into the series.
3) cj iwakura: There IS a disc version. They're apparently sending it to me for review...I think it's either out now or will be shortly.
4) We sent off a few interview questions to Telltale about Season Two...they said they'd get back to us after san diego comic con...if you're interested.
Glorious.
I think I could still play the game in one go because I still know what to do.
I played it so much when I was like 12, this might even explain why I am such an awful person nowadays.
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
If you buy me the the LucasArts collection that works on XP/Vista and give it to me at PAX I will pay you back and as a bonus I will you forever.
No joke.
Alternatively, when we are at PAX, take me to where I can buy it.
Can I cockblock everyone by sending you a copy in the mail?
I used to have a bunch of the LucasArts collections. The Dig is one of my all-time favorite games.
Damn that turtle-creature skeleton puzzle though! :x

I own sooo many PC games that I've never even played.
Fuck you Teefs.
It is like the most idioticly hard puzzle ever, because half the bones look like each other.

- No useful clues pointing you toward its location.
- A ton of environments to explore/inventory items to use at that point, but it was an impasse until you found the Sunstone.
- It's found by clicking on a hotspot that wasn't even a hotspot before.
Toughest graphic adventures, though, at least in my opinion were King's Quest III: To Heir Is Human, and Quest For Glory II: Trial By Fire.
