BBC bashes Master Chief

Interesting read

But the game gets a bit of a bashing from the reporter.

He has issues with the A.I, he was underwelmed by the graphics and he also thinks that bungie have tried to play safe with this version and not change much of what made Halo2.

Just one mans opinion but it does get me down a bit.

We are only a month or so away from launch.

The BBC's gaming reporting is complete shit though.

Nice sensationalist title by the way. He isn't even bashing it, he points out some obvious bugs that will certainly be fixed before release, and says that the decision not to try and reinvent the whole genre is a good one.

I imagine reviewers are going to love picking apart Halo 3. It will get high scores but plenty of snide comments will fill the actual text of the review. Especially if Bioshock turns out to be the second coming of FPS that it is currently being hyped up to be.

everyone seems to be 'underwhelmed by the graphics', i'm seeing it a lot. But hey, i've also heard it looks better than the beta, which looked great to me. There was something about them that just looked solid and real, so i can deal with them not being 'the best thing of all time ever. And not changed much from Halo 2? Well, no, quite possibly because it's a sequel. But then for me, after hearing all the new weapons and features, i was worried that the game i loved would get lost in amongst all this, so.. eh.

    I just read the article.

"BBC bashes Master Chief" is a bit harsh don't you think? Seemed completely fair and normal to me.

Ok bashes is a bit harsh but it did feel like and all round "negative" preview

The previewer had some seriously flawed expectations. I think most people are hoping/expecting it to maintain it's haloness and just take it to next level. From the article it sounds like this is exactly what is happening. For whatever reason it seems as though he was hoping for something entirely new.

Bleh Halo is under so much scrutiny. It is not even remotely my favorite franchise but I have no doubt that Halo 3 is going to be a fuckton of fun.

    Not enough Bloom.

Games don't look real unless there's enough bloom to make the screen completely white.

1UP's hands on from a few days ago said the graphics were really good. I believe Garnett even did his trademark "IN....SANE" about the graphics in the single player in one of the E3 1UP Yours'.

Anyway, you can judge for yourself by looking at screens and video. It's not flashy, it doesn't immediately grab you by the balls and make you go "OMG GRAFIX" like Gears of War does, but it's just incredibly clean and real looking.

As for not changing it much from Halo 2, what do you expect? It's the sequel to the damn game. They're not going to radically change anything about the gameplay because it's been so successful in the previous games in the series.

Meh. Halo 3 will be a good game but from what I played of the beta it's the same old shit, just extremely refined. While I realize that this is probably Bungie's goal, it's not what I'm looking for. I may play this with any friends of mine that pick this game up but I certainly won't spend money on it; there are other games that I am much more excited about.

Because of the hype the Halo series has behind it, people have incredibly unrealistic expectations, especially in terms of graphics and innovation. For me, if they just refine the Halo 2 gameplay, improve the graphics, and create a fulfilling conclusion, I'll be extremely pleased.

It's the final chapter in a popular trilogy.

I'm gonna go ahead and predict that half the Halo 3 reviews will gush about it and give it 11/10 and call it the greatest game of all time, and the other 1/2 will give it a 4/10 and call it a waste of time shitty game.

well, I didn't much like Halo 1 or 2, but I did have a great time with it playing co-op with a buddy of mine. I didn't hate the Halo games, they just felt a lil bland. However, I still want Halo 3 to be good and I still wanna play it. it just sucks I won't be able to until I get a 360, which won't be this year :(

ah well. I hope it ends up being great though. There's a small part of me that wishes it could be what I wanted Halo 1 and 2 to be. Just....more exciting and interesting. The gameplay was fine, it was everything else that felt bland to me.

Anyone who truly says that the Halo single-player was really some of the best out there (The Silent Cartographer != two amazing games... sorry) has some serious rose-tinted glasses. It only sounds that way because normally previews are sickening fluff pieces that amount to little more than a press release. The most negative thing you'll ever hear in a preview normally is "there were some issues I hope they work out before launch."

That's why the Lair review scores in EGM were such a shock to everybody ... because the previews were far too unwilling to criticize a work in progress, and readers take the absence of negative comments as a form of positive commentary.

It is interesting that you mention Mario. Mario has always been the best platformer on every Nintendo console. Halo 2 was probably the best shooter on the XBox, and that fact alone propelled it to superstar status. Like Mario, people are now expecting Halo 3 to fill the same role on the 360, and they are expecting every Halo afterwards to do the same. People aren't expecting more of the same. They are expecting to be blown away with every new release.
