If people haven't heard around these parts yet NBC thought they'd do some fear piece on evil hackers and so forth.
Well, turns out trying to take on very intelligent people isn't everything it has cracked up to be.
It seems like nowadays reporters are more and more trying to do the more popular fear pieces than real journalism nowadays, such a shame. Where are the Woodward and Bernsteins?

I'm waiting for Dateline to apologize. I have this feeling I'm going to be waiting a long time though.
Makes you wonder what NBC was thinking. The guys at DEFCON have a game called spot the fed. Why did NBC ever think they could get away with it?
If Dateline does a show with their footage I suspect it will more than likely blow up in their faces. Taking on idiots is one thing, but taking on very intelligent people is likely to open you up to a world of humiliation.

I'm waiting for Dateline to air it with some spin on how she felt so threatened by this underground convention of degenerates that she had to run for her life while being followed and verbally abused.
Maybe with some footage of exploding vans and 4chan memes spliced in, if they can get FOX LA's approval.

There's plenty of "Anonymous" responses to that Fox thing on Youtube. They just need to splice in voice clips with their footage and bingo.
Interesting stuff. Would it really hurt the author to do the tiniest amount of proofreading though? I keep having to restructure the sentences in my head and thinking makes me sad

This is more along the lines of what I fear, and sadly expect, will happen. And they've got plenty of material for doing it too. The crowd was jeering her pretty hard as she left the building. Now it isn't that she didn't deserve it, its just that 'bitch had it coming' doesn't hold up as well as it should in the court of public opinion. Especially when the other side is poorly understood and easily monsterized. Who knows though, maybe they'll finally catch some flack over their 'journalistic' tactics. These are the same asshats that do the "To catch a predator" sequence, right?
Hopefully this doesn't change the way they do DEFCON admissions though. It would be a real shame if it did, as I hear that the speakers they get are on par with any ACM or IEEE topics conference, and its just a fraction of the price to get in, everybody wins.
Why would she turn down the press pass? Why? I really don't understand.

They recently had Chris Hansen do something about iPod thefts where they would leave iPods sitting out in the open and then track down the people that took them after they hooked it up to a computer.

Yeah. They only recently discovered that Apple can track down where an iPod is plugged in and who it belongs to. Supposedly they're going to start implementing this as a kind of Lojack system now that all of this was made public

The whole idea was to get secret footage of hackers saying things they wouldn't tell a reporter. I guess she figured if she denied she was doing a story they'd, like, forget or something.

??
I really don't see anything wrong with that.
The defcon story is awesome though.
The thing about this was that only a few of them were actual thefts, where their marked iPods were sitting in cars and the such. The rest were abandoned in public places in various cities, so it seemed more of a way to try and make people into inhuman monsters.
hah, see, with that iPod thing, my brother and i were walking through Oxford, and he suddenly stopped and went "hey, was that an iPod?", and sure enough, there was a Nano sat on the floor. So we picked it up and stood around the area, it was still on and playing, so the owner would've been nearby, just hadn't realised they'd lost it. After much waiting and walking, looking for anyone who might've been missing their mp3 player, we took it, and he handed it in to the police as soon as he could. The upshot? No-one claimed it, so we now have an iPod.
I wonder how that would've looked on one of those shows..

that's not interesting news.
not unless you rape babies and steal people's gigahurtz
Initially, when I first saw the thread title, I thought some crazy reporter delved into Introversion's game of DEFCON and somehow used the "lust to destroy the world" angle as a basis for a story.
While that struck me as nuts, it didn't strike me as IMPROBABLE, which is a sad statement on the state of today's TV "journalism."

I'm surprised that game didn't garner more infamy, being what it is.

But if you were on your way home and hooked it up there to see what music they had before taking it into the police station the day after, criminal.

Probably fear that hundreds of techies were going to swarm her.

The part that damn near depressed me was she apparently turned down a press pass four times.
