Why are most game heroes kids?

Page-Page- Registered User regular
edited August 2007 in Games and Technology
This is mostly in regards to Japanese games, but it applies to some Western games, too. The main character(s) are godamn kids all the time. Anyone over the age of 25 is a grizzled old veteran, and any 10 year old can go around mangling monsters and grown men with relative ease. What gives with this? It's age discrimination!

Most of the games I play are at least rated T, many are M. Yet almost always we have kids. Nineteen seems to be a good average. Do game developers really think that I couldn't relate to grown people at age 16, and that I still can't at 18+? I'm for older characters in general, please, along with all the other things that need to change with games. Maybe it will help get people above the age of 19 playing the games. They do have a lot of disposable income, so I hear. Are people over 30 just too old to be out adventuring or killing slimes or whatever? Or are they above that sort of thing?

Anyone else feel this way?

It's one of those "The Youth are the future!" kind of things, only instead of cleaning up environment that was fucked up by the older generation, they're killing demons.

Maybe because game developers want to give all the kids a main character they can relate to?

You know, because kids play video games, and wouldn't relate to a mid-30s, balding fat guy named Buddy Jim.

Adults only relate to mechanic women and furries.

    Marketing, mainly.

Selling to the young male demographic, they need to make them old.. but not too old because too old is uncool and we wouldn't want that.

Because they want the player base to be able to relate to the person they are playing as. The majority of gamers are under 25.

You might as well ask why the main characters of most kids cartoons are children.

The average age of gamers is 32 apparently.
Lots of heroes are adults too.

The complaint is mostly for JRPGs I imagine.

    Oh-ho-ho!

To be honest, as a kid I liked it when I would play a game where the main character was my age. I didn't play too many games as a kid, around age 10; but loved Zelda and loved it when playing as a young Link in OOT and MM. My brother played mostly Macho guy games and he bought the systems and the games, so when deciding which game to play, Mortal Kombat versus Zelda, I think it was pretty obvious and to me it was actually fun to have a young hero that wasn't some crazy thunder god guy who shocks his opponents until they explode.

JRPS and Japanese action or adventure games, yes. But I also know that I play games that kids don't like and/or can't play well and the characters are 12. And most of the people I know who play games are at least mid-twenties. But for myself, even when I was younger and played games I would be thinking "Where are the godamn adults? Why do they just sit on their asses while the 14 year old save the world?" There are also M games where the main characters are still in high school. Sure, M means 18+ around here, and I'm sure people younger than that are playing them, but still. I would never NOT play a game because the main character is an adult, but my suspension of disbelief is often royally manhandled when I'm forced to destroy packs of raging, blood-spattered demons with a 11 year old and a butter knife. Maybe it's just me.

What 14 year old really plays Advance Wars?

Part of it might be the need to have "coming of age" development in the main character to make for some storyline.

I just want to add, my grandmother plays Bejeweled. She's 80 years old. Now a jump from say a 9 year old to 19, or even 29 isn't that breaking on an average, but when you factor in seniors in their later years, it can definitely have a bigger impact on the ages.

I would totally play a hard-boiled game where you're a middle-aged or older hero coming out of retirement to kick ass one last time and probably do it without subtlety, with the main character expiring at the game's end.

So, MGS4. Or that Kane and Lynch game. Or anything else that applies.

At least in FFXII they were... a bit older? (Ignoring Vaan and Penelo...) Balthier was 22, Fran was (__don't ask__), Basch was 36.

    ...Although Larsa was 12 D:

I think it's just a general prevailing trend amongst media that is primarily aimed at the teen-25 market. That and being something of a JRPG/anime/manga cliche... (everyone wants to be 16 in those, although I swear they never look their age. Unless I have terrible age perception)

25 seems to be a capping point. I mean, I'm pretty sure most of the Resident Evil playable characters were around that age.
