Why you no dance? Also BYOC rant

I feel like I may have been the only one DANCING to freezepop. Everyone else just kinda stood there. I was disappointed and decided to make a thread about it.

Also, a comment on closing the BYOC area at 2:30 instead of 3. I planned to take a bus just after 3 home, but since you kicked me out at 2:30 I ended up walking home. Not the end of the world, but it would have been nice to know you kick me out at 2:30 so I can plan accordingly and leave earlier to catch a bus home or something. Again, not the end of the world but it would be nice to know what your game plan is for the night. I assume tomorrow night will be no different and I'll plan for it...but ya that was kinda mean :(

I agree with the dancing part at least, I actually felt bad for the One Ups because they where really, -really- good, yet all they got was some slight head bobbing. Then for Optimus Rhyme there where a few small groups but most everyone just kind of stood there. I stayed for Freezepop until Bike Thief, at that point I decided I didn't like them, but just like the other two nobody freaking moved. Everyone just kind of stood there nodding their heads. I mean comon...

As for BYOC it wasn't just you guys, I was there freeplaying some CS when we got kicked out. Which wasn't the end of the world but my ride came pretty much on-time for 3 so I had to wait a extra while (and I don't like Seattle at night). But that's just my two cents.

Freezepop truely was the best at harnessing the crowd energy tonight. They really got a reaction.

I mean, this is still a giant crowd of geeks. There is only so much rocking out they can do. I got the destinct feeling tonight that the crowd, for the most part, simply didn't know how to rock out.

But it got closest with Freezepop.

    Also keytars are hilarious.

If you think that there wasn't enough dancing, you should come up to Ottawa, you don't even get head bobbing, I was at a bloody Hollies show and there were 3 people dancing, for a fifties themed speed punk band, goddamn scene kids.

Furthermore, the crowd popped huge for all the bands, all the bands were feeding huge from the crowd, if you can get a crowd to singalong, clap, yell, jump, bob heads, wave hands, you did well.

Not everyone enjoys listening to music the same way. People could just as easily post about being annoyed that the dancing people were bumping into them and distracting them from their enjoyment of the show. *shrug*

Albertans (Edmontonians, anyway) seem to rock out to just about anything.
Fast songs? Woo, jumping time! Slow songs? Woo, jumping time!

i think geeks just don't tend to express their emotions through movement.
in fact, they don't really express emotion all that well.

anyway the first 20 minutes of oneup was good and then i got bored and left. was freezepop, optimus, etc worth it?

I went in for the second concert at MC Frontalot with my friend after we had finished super bad (one gripe I have is that after the exhibitions close there isn't much to do besides free-play, which lacked in games pc wise), and just as instantly my friend decided that this was too stupid. Just like last night people where standing, not even head-bobbing for Frontalot and even the one row of chairs was too much. It shouldn't even be an option really, while it was probably meant if people needed to rest after dancing it just turned into lazy idiots with ds's sitting around.

Well i dunno if you noticed but allot of gamers arnt in the best of shape to begin with then combine that with the fact that they spent all day going to all kinds of places in the convention center. I think they have the right to sit down and enjoy a concert as they see fit.

honestly i think this is a stupid thread though. just cause they wernt dancing didnt mean you couldnt be the trend breaker.

I also agree that Optimus Rhymes should have played Super Shiny Metal!

Seriously. I was near the front row, it was a great show.

I did stop in during the middle of the Mini-Bosses show, though, and the crowd didn't seem nearly as charged. Maybe it picked up towards the end?

Of course I have noticed this, and by no means do I claim to be in great shape myself (if any), and just as well I did quite happily dance to Optimus Rhyme with the small group near me which of course was looked at with confusion from those around. The thing is that movement at a concert is always great, and it's not only good for the people it's also a good sign for the bands/singers. It shows they have the crowds support and that they're doing a good job, but sitting down is just pathetic. If most bands had a crowd like PaX that didn't move they'd threaten to (if not just) quit.

I'd say that most gamers are just kind of reserved, and enjoy music well enough standing motionless. I don't really see a problem with this, as it doesn't keep you from rocking out.

Well if I recall (didn't see em this year) the minibosses don't deal with the audience nearly as well, they just play and ask if you're ready to rock.

Also, I really think the set needs changing up. I mean, yes, zelda and metroid evoke feelings of nostalgia but there are only so many times you can hear them before you really wonder if there are better songs to get a crowd going out there.

I would for example be hella pumped if they gave a nod to PC gaming with unreal tournament music, namely the trophy room tune that is really quite charged (something metroid can't deliver, hence the people standing there).

So yeah, concerts should really be an active thing in general, but I'm not big on faking it if you really aren't having your face rocked. They need to examine all of gaming to find some tunes that you can't help but move to.

ASIDE: I think it would be awesome if Deltron could be persuaded to play PAX, someone should really get on that amirite?

This was my first PAX, and hence had my first concern experience on Saturday. I certainly had a good time, although I'm sure not everyone felt the same way (most of my friends left during the minibosses).

While there wasn't much in the way of dancing, seeing DSes being waved in the air to the music is utterly nerdy and cool.

I also agree with your sentiment regarding the minibosses' set. As PAX gets older and older, I just wonder how many people are going to "get" references to the old Castlevania, Mega Man, Metroid, Contra, and even Zelda games. I was one of the relative few who head-bobbed and cheered to songs I remembered from my youth, whereas many of the kids had looks of, "wtf is this song?" on their faces. Syncing one of the screens with videos of the games they're covering would help tremendously, but I'm sure that's difficult to do.

    I'm claiming: tired feet.

Being up at 6:30am, hitting the PrePAX Breakfast (bacon waffles!), hauling BYOC equipment in at 10am, in line until 1:40pm, set-up, then racing to Exhibition hall for swag.....by 3pm my feet were screaming.

So by the 1ups set at 10pm? Oooooh a chair! No dancing.

My feet also continued to be tender for the next two days. This is our first PAX, and we decided that if we focus on concerts next year we need to plan better for the best experience.

I agree that it was ridiculous everyone just stood there. My group of friends and I were the 8 people at stage left (that would be the far right if you're facing the stage) rocking out hardcore to Freezepops, The One Ups, MC Frontalot and The Minibosses. While everyone was staring at the stage like zombies, I was doing the undead dance from WoW and my friends were head banging and going wild. Standing still is not appreciating the music or the band. Rocking face and pen-fifteens is the way to show the band that you love their music. Stop being so introverted and rock some socks.

Yeah, while it would have been nice to have more people dancing, at the same time I think that the non-dancers have every right to be there. In fact, there were a couple of dancers we could have done without. I'm looking at you obscenely tall guy with the palm tree hairdo that pushed his way to the front to stand in front of me, block my view, and almost elbow me in the face multiple times while drunkenly dancing.

I got a pretty good amount of drunken dancing in myself on Saturday night, though. I just hope I didn't hit anyone with my hair or accidentally push or elbow anyone in the process.

Every year someone cries about this shit.

    Here goes:

If you're playing DS or whatever, chillin', etc., as long as you're out of the way of the people who are in front of the stage gettin' down, that's fine. As others have said, everyone enjoys it differently.

THAT BEING SAID, if you're going to stand around like a zombie, or you're not interested in the music, and/or you're only interested in standing around, talking shit about the band/artist/music style, please move to the sides/back or just gtfo. You make the show less enjoyable for everyone around you.

That doesn't apply for Coulton (sic), of course, since his style is totally different.

Oh, and to the guy who said no one was into the minibosses... are you NUTS? I was at both lives (friday/sat), and the minibosses set EASILY got the best crowd reaction and interaction.

Perhaps you were just too far back, and didn't notice all the crazies up in the front who were totally into it.

My friends and I were on the far right side (near you mr bawls jangles) during the minibosses concert (also during the friday concert). We got stopped because we actually started moshing during the minibosses. Eh, whatever. I was really freaking tired, my feet hurt like fuck by the end of the night fri an sat but during the minibosses I was dancing. My friends and I were jumping around, etc etc. Last year during the optimus rhyme concert i was dancing with this girl and this dude on the far left side but not this year.

Most of the time i just swayed with the beat until a part where i could really rock out to. As for the freezepop concert there was a great crowd reaction, i dunno about the lack of dancing (as my friends and those around me were dancing) but did anyone else not enjoy frontalots concert? there was too much fucking bass i couldn't understand a damn motherfucking word he said. i was highly dissappointed and watched the movie 8Bit until the minibosses were going on. Am I the only one who completely didn't like Freezepop? I had heard so much good stuff about them, and hyped them to the friends I brought, and . . . left after the fourth song because it was so un good. I was digging on the Roland hardcore keytars, just not the music coming out of them. Boys on Film? Felt like an inside joke from the outside or something, maybe I just missed it.

Loved Optimus though, and what I saw of the Minibosses. One ups were pretty good, though I caught myself and others staring gape-jawed at the game screens more than at the band :-) Hate that I missed the Neskimos' set, but the guys I was with were actually pissed the rest of the night at Freezepop.

I wasn't quite as thrilled with the bands as I expected, but I left halfway through both concerts for various reasons so I probably missed a lot. The Zombie song (Re Your Brains) was awesome. Frontalot and a few other bands needed better levels, because half of enjoying Front is parsing his rhymes and if you can't hear the lyrics it's almost impossible.

Remember, PAX spans a broad range of geekdom (from jock Halo all the way to LARP and "Where's the Mountain Dew") so each side needs to accept differences. Some will tend to stand, sit, break out a DS or talk, whereas others will want to rock out hardcore. Both are acceptable, just get out of the way of each other. No one wants a broken DS or bruised arm.
