I've had a few mice since (currently MX1000 and Razer Copperhead), but that holds a special place as my first "serious" mouse. (Before I knew about mouse quality I used to just buy 10 dollar cheapies).
It stays as a spare one in my cabinet.

It had been ailing for a week or two now, but it left my USB port today.
We had some good times. We had Half-Life 2, and HL2 Episode One, and World of Warcraft.
I'm sure... I'm sure it's in a better place now... *sniff*.
Oh MX518, why did you have to leave me??? Why?????? You were so young.... We were about to play through Bioshock together, but... not anymore.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2pm at the local PC hardware recycling center.
My Mx-518 is still running strong. Its tough losing a mouse though. I am currently eyeing that 100$ logitech mouse only because of the weights on it. Weights = win for me.

Not so fast. I've heard many good things about Logitech support, and even though your mouse is probably out of warranty, giving them a call won't hurt. I know people who have had MX510s die on them, and Logitech replaced them with 518s for no charge. Granted, I don't think this kind of thing happens with everyone, but if you call and explain that you love your mouse oh so much and didn't mistreat it, they may be extra nice to you.

I still use my MX700, great mouse, had it for years now
I hope my MX518 does not die. I would cry.
I bought some new slidey mouse skate things for it because the old ones wore out though.
I need a new mousepad....

Ummm why? If his mouse is out of warranty and did a good job he should be more than happy to purchase another one. Electronics don't last forever and I'd rather support a company that makes a quality product than try and freeload off of them. Free stuff is nice but it's not how companies stay in business. Personally I'm using a 518 and will happily purchase another one when this one craters unless they update it or some new fangled tech comes out between now and then that is a must try.

Same here. I had one at home, it got me through over a year and a half of City of Heroes and Guild Wars. I was rummaging through some boxes in the basement of my office building and I found another one, in the box, cast aside.
So now I have one at home and one at work.
The one at work sometimes has a little trouble catching its charging connectors when I dock it, but other than that they're both running strong.

I bought my mx518 as soon as they hit the market and she's still kicking.
The new G7 is supposed to be pretty pimp. I feel your pain, though. We have 3 MX518s. I have 1 at work, 1 for my PC at home, and one for the wife's PC. Probably gonna go G7 if they ever die, but they're tough little buggers.

Do you mean the revised corded G5, which now has both thumb buttons, or have they done something new with the G7 as well?
Edit: Aha, looks like there is a shiny new black version. They didn't add the second thumb button like they did when they revised the G5, so it's still a no-buy for me. I love my thumb buttons and use them both routinely at work and when gaming.
I'm a total Logitech mouse whore. MX1000 at work. MX1000BT for my laptop. MX510 Blue at home. I also have an MX510 Red spare sitting around.

DOH! Yeah, I meant the G5. I gotta have my thumb buttons too, plus I don't do cordless.
I've got a hand-me-down MX510 that my old roommate gave me when he upgraded to...I can't remember, one of Logitech's first laser mice. The thing's still going strong, if a little dirty. One of the buttons by the scroll wheel is stuck and doesn't work, and the feet are all but gone, but it's still a great little mouse.
I love my 518, but like someone pointed out, I'm shocked at how much this weird surface LOVES filth and dirt. And I always wash my hands before using my PC or playing videogames.
I like Logitech mice, but I always find myself gravitating towards Microsoft's lil' wonders. I'm currently using a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0, which is perfect for gaming. Before that I had another mouse of the same model, but had to switch when I bought the accompanying keyboard in it's own pack, and the new receiver wouldn't pick up the old mouse. I gave the old one to a friend. Before these mice I had a Microsoft USB optical. Lovely mouse, but I wouldn't trade anything now for my current rodent... it's perfect. Long battery life, two thumb buttons, horizontally-scrolling wheel (first mouse to do so), comfortable fit... and it doesn't pick up dirt.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

I had the wired version. It rocked ass, but died after a year. My Logitech mice always last 5-6 years.

I had the cordered version of the Intellimouse and I loved it, but the left click died on me. I found myself using the thumb buttons as substitutes for a while, but I finally got a Logitech MX610 Wireless Laser 'Smart' Mouse.
I like this MX610, except the wireless...the mouse is advertised as being smart and when it picks up on wireless interference it will supposedly seamlessly switch channel frequency and avoid interference. Yeah, mine doesn't seem to do that so much.
Otherwise it is awesome. But when the cursor starts going sporadic, I go sporadic and consider throwing the mouse against the wall.
So I slit open the cord (what do I have to lose?) and found a broken wire. My dad says he thinks we can splice in some wire and a drop of solder to fix things.
So maybe (cross fingers) it'll be back from the dead.
Dumb question: I have this here Logitech Wireless Desktop set, but I don't use mouse that came with it. I still use my old MX310 mouse. Now, I see this piece of beautiful work on Logitech's site, and I'm wondering... Will this work with my existing wireless receiver? Or will I have to plug in its own dedicated wireless receiver?
I love my mx 518 - didn't even realize it was popular until I saw this thread.
I've basically sold my soul to Logitech for my peripherals - I just love their stuff (provided they have cords. I'll use cordless for work, but not for gaming). G15 keyboard, MX 518 mouse, Z10 speakers...
I prefer the MX Revolution over the G7 when it comes to cordless. The MX's battery lasts longer and charges faster, even though the G7 comes with two batteries. The G7's left and right buttons are kind of flimsy too; they're molded out of the thin plastic shell. I had to quit using my G7 after I knocked it off my end table two feet to the thickly-carpeted floor. The left button is hyper-sensitive now and treats a single-click as a double or triple, no matter how I change the sensitivity.
The G7 is not sturdy enough to use from a couch or recliner where there's more risk of dropping it. It would be okay if you're always at a table or desk, but in that case you'd be better off with a corded mouse anyway.

To save some money? I mean, if I had a choice between paying for a replacement or letting Logitech take care of it for free, I'd go with the latter every time. I'd have no problem buying a 518 if my 510 dies, but if I can get a replacement with a simple, no-hassle phone call...well, why the hell not?
Sorry if it looked like I was suggesting he try to con them out of one, but I was trying to show that their service is quite good. And unlike most customer service, they seem to actually care.
Go buy an Evoluent 3. I've got bad RSI/Carpel Tunnel issues for not having a life outside of the intornatz, and a few months ago I started having mild pain in my mousing hand, so I decided pick up this mouse. Better than a mother fucking vicodin. No pain whatsoever. I'd also recommend Microsoft Ergonomic Natural Keyboard 4000.
I feel your pain. I had to bury my MX 518 last month. It was painful, we've been through Call of Duty, WoW and F.E.A.R. I've been trying to find a replacement but I doubt I can find something better then it. The memories can't come back. ;[
So since my dad doesn't know where his soldering iron is and I was too impatient to wait for him to find it I went to Fry's and got a Logitech G5 which is super sweet except the dynamic sensitivity is indicated by a tiny glowing man on the left side of the mouse.

My MX518 (which I was recommended from this very forum) is still going strong, and I love it. Even if that "dented" look is just weird.

the G5 had a grey version 2 for example (no other real differenecs). the 3rd version is the one with 2 thumb buttons and goes by G5 2007
