On the topic of bishies, American culture had some pretty long-haired dudes back in the 80s. I mean, Guns N'Roses guys, that sort of thing. And as for effiminate, yeah, the 80s were packed.

...This would be a prime opportunity to rickroll but too bad I don't have youtube access at work.

The funny thing is that nobody but the most conservative adults of the time thought of the pretty glamrock stars as anything but masculine. Hypermasculine, really... those guys nailed groupies sometimes three at a time and practically worshipped their cocks oi vey with the spandex.

Their thing was that they were so secure in their masculinity that they could have poofy hair and makeup and still be considered master cocksmiths and arch fucking bushmen.

This post was fun to write.

Here within America, white men seem to be more approving of effiminate guys than black men, too. Black culture seems to really despise effeminate men, at least going by the appearance of men in music videos. Meanwhile, lots of white music stars look pretty girly in music videos. And lots of white male movie stars have a girly look too. There are also TV shows like Will and Grace and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy which seem to have a zero black audience, too.

Well, that might be true of the majority black audience, but you just have to drive past a gay bar on a friday night to know that blacks make up a sizable percentage of the transgender/crossdresser community (in this straight guy's estimation, they tend to pull it off better as well). Much higher percentage than the percentage of blacks in a given community. I wonder if the aversion to ambiguity is a trait in African American culture because of this minority trend, or if it exists in reaction to the aversion... or a combination of both.

Gonna translate or is someone gonna have to whip out a dictionary. It's too damn late for this!

    It's nothing worth translating.

I'm just sad that 3 years of university japanese means that I can read the above and not much else.

Heh. Well, at least you don't have seven years of a dead language...

I didn't know you did French, XoB!

No, I "only" took five years of French. I think, maybe six.

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Japanese RPGs. There's no game there, at least to me, just a sequence of menus and more text than I'd care to read.

I'd been sort of sliding down this path for some time. I liked Chrono Trigger and FF6, but I never got the big deal about Sephiroth nor FF7 in general. Xenogears had an interesting combat system, but I played it after I got a chance to play Star Ocean: The Second Story and the system just felt slow to me. FFX was the deal breaker. The story was about as uninteresting as you can get, and while the cinemas were pretty as all get out paying (then) $50 for what amounted to a movie set me right off. The utter suck of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time helped immensely, as well.

Of course, in 04 I really started playing pen and paper RPGs for the first time and after experiencing those JRPGs just feel so... limiting. Mostly because the other characters in the party have never been as interesting as the people I get in pen and paper RPGs, so thusly the game itself is less entertaining to play. I find western RPGs, those of Bioware/Black Isle/Obsidian Entertainment not to mention Elder Scrolls and Ultima much more enthralling because, even if I know this isn't really the case, it feels like I get to do more things. In JRPGs it really feels to me like I'm playing a movie/book, whereas in western RPGs it's more like I'm making my own.

Japanese action games, on the other hand, I'm on like white on rice. DMC, Final Fight, pretty much anything where a fist meets a face is a lot of fun. I've not really been let down by Japanese beat-'em'ups barring DMC2 and Urban Reign. I love the absurd difficulty and the real sense of accomplishment one gains when the game is beaten.

Alright, I'm not even going to pretend to have read this tread. I'm just going to oversimplify the stereotypes:

    1) Japanese people are into pedophilia, bestiality, cuteness, and any combination thereof. That's pretty straightforward.

    2) American gamers are gay as hell, in a Grecian kind of way. 'We' tend to like our games populated with big, overly muscled, hyper-violent manly men blowing shit up.

Why does being statistically accurate always get flagged for racism? He was also being obviously general.

It's like calling someone who says "Japanese cars run better than American cars" ignorant because they see a statistical curiosity and you refuse to acknowledge it because it would mean that you unfairly judge things.

Although, he was probably just joking. I think he is on to something.

This seems pretty unlikely. San Francisco is the gay capital of the country, and it's pretty much devoid of any black people. Most gays are white men in America from what I can tell, although I'm open to seeing statistics that prove otherwise.

Well, you can't take one city and assume that the situation there holds for the rest of the country or world. I've been to Minneapolis, Chicago, Vegas, Boston, and New York, and things are different in each town. Plus, if it's not your subculture, it can be hard to know the details. For example, I once took a date to a nightclub on "ladies only" night, if you catch my meaning. Being a straight male, I had no idea... I was like Banky in Chasing Amy when I figured it out, though. My date figured it out before me and didn't care, luckily (I'm lucky she didn't find a new date while she was there...).

Anyway, the Frisco gay subculture might have a higher percentage of a given minority than the town as a whole, that's basically what I was saying in my previous post.

Fuck statistics, He's right. Do like he says and walk past a gay bar on a friday night. Chealsea and Greenwich at like 2 AM have black tranny hookers all over the place. (And before somebody says it, no, I dont know this because I solicit them :P)

And to adress the whole Black/Gay issue, black cultrue in general is much more conformist as a whole than white cluture. But as homosexuality is biological, there are just as many gays in the black community. They are just more likley to be closeted. Havent you heard the phrase "on the D.L.?"

D.L. Hughley? But his show was cancelled! Nobody's on it anymore! ;-)

    Just kidding.

But yeah, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. What do we infer from this that's thread related? It's hard to pin down races, cultures, genders, and societies, as exceptions exist to almost every rule. It's like many African cultures, in how homosexuality is often considered to be immasculating, but studies of the spread of HIV there indicate unprotected gay sex is a large part of the reason it originally spread so quickly there (well, that and because condoms are immasculating, too).

To focus back on Japan, they seem to have a somewhat healthier view of homosexuality. I mean, still messed up, but they don't deny it in U.S. Congressional proportions... from what I can tell, gay people are expected to fulfill their obligation to society by getting married and having children the same as everyone else, but that it's not really society's business who they bang on the side. Again the disclaimer: I don't know a lot about Japan, just what I've observed through video games, anime, and wikipedia.

It seems to boil down to the fact that the Japanese that they don't see "androgynous" as threatening, and even if it did seem a bit "gay" to them, they wouldn't be as threatened, because they don't seem to have the cultural stigma associated with hot man-on-man action.

Heck, in Persona 3, I'm fairly certain that Tanaka wanted to bang the protagonist; he was always talking about how pretty he is, but how problematic it would be for him to keep underage boys around the house...
