It's from a few years ago now.

Hehe :) I just realized that most dark, full beards look similarly disreputable, not so much the blonde ones. I wonder why that is.

Also, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but how do you guys feel comfortable with posting pictures of yourselves in a forum that is viewed by probably a thousand people a day? Aren't you worried that it's going to be jacked and used for nefarious/embarrassing purposes?

That beard, though, was intentionally grown to look somewhat disreputable. I had actually trimmed it a couple days beforehand. And I just woke up from a nap before that picture was taken, so my hair's all crazy. Fun times!

I'm really not too worried about anything like that being done with my photos. It might be funny, even!

any besides the greatest hits album that is, although i guess that'll do

Hollywood is trying to do a remake of "The Lives of Others," a film that came out last year in Germany.

The German version is superbly acted and well-paced. I refuse to believe that Hollywood can make a better film. It will probably have car chases and shootouts. D:

There should be a moratorium on Hollywood remaking foreign films.

    Yeah, that's gonna suck.

Are they going to leave it set in East Germany as well, with just the actors speaking English this time?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If they just make the same movie with people speaking English, that's moronic. If they actually reset it somewhere, like USSR or under COINTELPRO or some weird shit like that, you might end up with something interesting.

I thought that movie won the Oscar for best Foreign film? It got plenty of exposure, why they need to remake it is beyond me.

I do have a problem where if I watch a foreign movie late at night, all the reading causes me to go to sleep really fast. I really have to be awake and alert to make it through one, and in the case of a film like Pan's Labyrinth, it is disappointing that the text has to distract you from the rich visuals.

Oh, I mostly didn't bother with the subtitles for Pan's Labyrinth, the story was pretty clear and it was just too beautiful to only look at the lower half of the screen. ^^

I dont' know if its just cause i'm a reader or what but i hear the argument that subtitles distract from the visuals alot and I never have this problem. In fact, I watch most movies that are in english with subtitles anyway. This could be because my hearing is less than optimal and i'll often times be going "what did they say?" at a movie and having to rewind it (or missing the nxt part cause i was trying to figure out the first part). So yeah, i watch everything i can with subtitles and most/all of my friends hate it/veto it.

It's less of an issue on the TV at home, but when you're in the movie theater watching a subtitled film, you really have to restrict your viewing to the lower portion of the screen.

Because of Hollywood, Americans are used to not having to deal with subtitles, whereas most people in non-English-speaking countries--or near a lot of non-English-speaking countries--are used to dealing with them.

Semi-related, but did you happen to go see The Magic Flute opera when it was on a bit ago? I know the story but I was expecting there to be the usual big screen with translations on it for the audience. Instead they did all the speaking in English and then the singing in German...it was fucking weird.

Like....if you can sing in German, why can't you do the spoken lines in German?

People over here are stupid though. I remember my friend being totally disheartened that Pan's Labyrinth was sub titled.

If that movie hadn't been in Spanish, I wouldn't have watched it. Honestly, there's something lyrical about the language in relation to the imagery that works. Profoundly. I think that's a general truth. I've always found that the experience of a film is best enjoyed in its original language, with good subtitles. You just can't replicate the same kind of tone that the original actors infuse the characters with.

And I think a lot of it has to do with what kind of reader you are. The faster you read, the better you can move between dialog and visuals and not break the overall effect. I haven't noted a difference in the experience based on screen size.
