When did the avatar limit change?

I was troubleshooting why my avatar (of several years) suddenly became a redX, and it turns out the limit is now 48.8kb?
It must have happened some time in the past couple days, although a search doesn't turn up any posts on the subject.

Is this a permanent change?

Your avatar loads fine for me. Blame Comcast?

It may be because he has a period in his url. Some browsers get angry when you try to embed that, but work fine once it's cached.

I get the red x in IE, but not FF and Opera.

Same here, I see it fine in Firefox but it's a red x in IE.

That's odd though. Every URL other than rewritten URLs will have a period in it.

A period seperate from file extensions or domain names, smart aleck.

Switched hosts, changed filename, seems to work ducky now.
Also, I changed it through the "edit profile" link rather than the "edit avatar" link, which bypassed the size limit.
