Favorite 'Graphic Novel' Webcomics

Its really interesting to see how artists function without a publishing house looking over their shoulder.

I really like the artwork of Attack of the Amazing Flying Spud even if the story's kind of silly. Do any of you guys have some favorites? I've been feeling like making my reading a little more diverse.

P-A, Megatokyo, and PBF. I've never read any other webcomics that have actually been printed. And it's really hard to call P-A and PBF graphic novels, so I guess really only Megatokyo.

Go read it, as it is glorious, and story-driven which I guess qualifies it as a "Graphic Novel" webcomic.

Dr. McNinja is also great, but man, Scary Go Round is so good. And the dude's been writing/drawing it for years, with updates five days a week. I should get around to purchasing the collections. At first when he switched from his old computer-aided art style to the new hand-drawn one, I was iffy about it, but jesus christ he got fantastic at it, and it didn't take him very long to do so.

Exploitation Now is fairly deranged, but it's a good mix of rampant insanity and good story/characters. The artist went on to do something more serious called Errant Story, but I haven't read much of it.

I really should pick up the graphic novel version he published.

Agreed on Girl Genius, though I'm in the same position as Mask is for Dr McNinja - the bookmark is sitting there, but I never get around to catching up.

I've followed Megatokyo for a long time, but the current chapter is pretty much losing me to be honest, it's quite a slog.

I think Megatokyo's starting to jump the proverbial shark, and I've stayed with it this long.

It seems to really be pushing it as believable scenarios goes.

Dr. McNinja, as others have said. The art started out kind of rough but has become a real treat to look at over the past few arcs.

Return to Sender is completely hilarious and well drawn, but no longer updates.

Platinum Grit, from what I've read of it, is very good.

And War for Arcadia, the comic project created by a bunch of PA artists has an ongoing story and continuity. It's basically just an excuse to have big, crazy fights, but there's still character development and stuff.

I'd recommend any of the following currently ongoing fights for anyone interested: Team Spectre-X and Luis vs Tantz and Ray, Osiros vs Sin, and Xandriel vs Cyborg Necromancer.

Achewood isn't a graphic novel is it? It's more of a daily that happens to have serial elements. I would say that Sinfest is more of a "graphic novel" than Achewood is.

And aye, Megatokoyo has gone over to the dull side ages ago.

I used to read a couple of them, but I lost the names and now I can't fucking find them. One had a war between red stormtroopers and blue stormtroopers, and right before I stopped reading they started fighting yellow stormtroopers. There was another one about a war like WWI, but then the author decided to tell the backstory and all of the characters ended up being teenagers or some shit.

Come to think of it, besides Dr. McNinja and Questionable Content, none of my regular webcomics have overarching stories. Besides Ctrl-Alt-Del, that is.

Just kidding, CAD isn't real.

Cool, that's the first one. I've been looking for it for about a year now. It doesn't look like the story has moved along much, though. It's too bad the author takes such a cavalier attitude towards putting out new pages, he could really be popular if he could stay on task.

I know what you mean, I just discovered rice boy last week. Finishing the archives is like hitting a brick wall and 3 to 4 updates a month is going to be hard. But wonderful!

Digger is also bona fide awesome, but this time the brick wall is a subscription.

Octopus Pie made the art/comic blog rounds recently. It's pretty new, but great.

1/0 was a lot of fun to read.

I just spent a week pouring through "Roomies/It's Walky/Shortpacked!", which I'm sure most people are aware of but I never got around to reading. "It's Walky" fits fairly well into the category of 'graphic novel' webcomics, and it's quite good other than the fact it sometimes piles on plot-twists until the whole thing becomes inexplicable.

It also has one of the weirdest evolutions of anything I've ever seen, starting as a college comedy and gradually turning into a sci-fi drama.

Pretty much everything else I read has been mentioned already, but Dr. McNinja deserves another shout-out. Great stuff.

...I've never heard of most of those (except Megatokyo, but who the hell hasn't?).

Though I will second/third/whatever Roomies/It's walky!/Shortpacked, Girl Genius and Scary Go Round, especially Girl Genius because everything Phil Foglio touches is gold, especially his more ahem "esoteric" early work, if you catch my drift.

Anyway, stuff not on the list that should be:

• The collected works of Faith Hicks for a start; Demonology 101, Ice and (though not technically a "graphic novel" and more of an illustrated novella) Trilogy. She also has a published zombie book called Zombies Calling, but I won't link that because it's not on-line.
• Inverloch, mostly for its fantastic art, but also for engaging characters, even if one of them is a sort of bipedal goat thing.
• Earthsong. The original art is a bit meh, but the whole thing is being redone for print and is much improved. Unfortunately that makes the site a bit of a mess, but the premise is at least original even if told via the cliché of "from the POV of the amnesiac."

The Cow

Has Sinfest been mentioned? I'm pretty sure it's out there in published form somewhere. It gets annoyingly repetitive after the first two years, but the first year righteously belongs in any canon of webcomics.

And the thing is, Megatokyo wasn't ever really...meant to be a romance drama? It really only became that when Largo left. Which as Servo said exactly when it became worthless.

Eh. I guess I see most of these comics as not having any real character development so much as moving through common archetypes, so I don't see why I can't recco Sinfest, but you're probably right.

I just started reading Rice Boy, and it's completely captivating.

I guess Questionable Content falls under this, then? Standard hipster scene comedy. The robot is kind of fun, and I like the angry emotionally disturbed girl. Good for not going to class to.

I recently discovered rice boy, a really engrossing surreal webcomic. It gets more fantastic with every page and tells a very interesting story, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a penchant for the surreal.

If anything, it's got better, since Randy has since learned to, y'know, draw....

The characters have moved on with their lives and Randy's sort of adopted another character from a different webcomic after her original home wound up but the overall feel is still as iconoclastic as ever, though there stillisn't enough Choo-Choo Bear....
