November 23rd update (thanks Dark Shroud)

The latest System Software Update is now ready for download for the PLAYSTATION 3. Here are the details of what this firmware accomplishes:
• Stability during playing some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.

• Stability of System Software including Internet Browser and Information Board has been improved.

• Stability of the upscaler for PlayStation 2 format software has been improved. (Playability of PlayStation 2 depends on model)

• [Remote Start] feature is changed to avoid unintended power on.

November 13th update: DivX confirmed for PS3
TOKYO & SAN DIEGO, Nov 13, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- DIVX | charts | news | PowerRating -- DivX, Inc. (NASDAQ:DIVX) today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

Products that bear the DivX Certified logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience that includes reliable video playback and excellent visual quality. DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

You've been waiting for it. Firmware 2.00 is finally coming out this week: tomorrow, to be precise. This update, which has been a year in the making, was supposed to herald a new era of functionality for PS3. Many expected in-game XMB, additional video codecs, and more. However, we're saddened to say that none of that made the cut for this update. Here's what you'll be seeing tomorrow:

Remote Start - As hinted by the last PSP firmware update, Remote Play has been enhanced with a brand new feature. Using Remote Start, PSP owners will be able to turn on and access their PS3's content from any wi-fi hotspot. For example, while vacationing, you may find out about an excellent Thursday Store update. You'll be able to turn on your PS3 and start downloading content to your PS3 while you're away. When you're done, you can turn the system off as well.

Information Board - On the upper right-hand corner of the XMB, you'll see a scrolling list of headlines, hand-picked by Sony. Currently, these will all be related to video games and PlayStation. If a specific headline is particularly interesting, PS3 owners will be able to access Information Board from Network and see the content in greater detail. Importing your own RSS feeds is something that's planned for a future firmware upgrade. This feature can be disabled in Settings.
Gallery: PS3 firmware 2.00

Themes - PSP owners recently got access to the ability to create custom themes for their system. PS3 owners will also get this feature. Not only will you be able to customize your wallpaper, you'll be able to change the icons and fonts used in the XMB. An official theme creator will be available for the PC, so users will be able to create their own and share with their friends. Additionally, new themes will be made available on PlayStation.com and the PLAYSTATION Store. The best user-generated themes will also be featured on the official site.

XMB Color Selector - The background of the XMB is no longer out of your control. The color of the XMB waves background can be selected in Settings.

Music & Photo Playlists - You can now open and create your own playlists from within the XMB. For example, you can create a "Party Mix," which features your favorite songs from your PS3. Playlists cannot be imported from Memory Stick, and music and photo playlists cannot be combined. However, future firmware updates will improve this feature.

Additional Sorting Options - Currently, music can be sorted by Artist and Album on the PS3. Additionally, users will be able to sort by Year.

DualShock 3 support - You'll be able to turn on and off DualShock 3 support from the Settings menu on the XMB.

PLAYSTATION Network XMB group - The PLAYSTATION Network will get its own icon on the XMB, and will be featured between Network and Friends. Within the PLAYSTATION Network, you'll be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management. "Other features" will be included in the future, such as Home.

Canon printer support - Additional printers are now supported by the PS3.

That's all the updates found in PS3 firmware 2.00, which will be available tomorrow. When speaking with SCEA representatives, we found out that in-game XMB support is still in the works, and that additional video support is "almost definitely" happening. However, there's still no clear indication as to when these features will be incorporated. A regular schedule of updates is planned for the coming year, but specific details were not provided.

We're certain that many PS3 owners will be disappointed by how underwhelming the 2.00 update is, especially in light of the rumors that spread on the internet. However, this update provides the framework for a much meatier PS3 experience. For example, the PSN XMB icon will be expanded quite significantly over the next few months, as services like Home add much more weight to the online PS3 experience. Media is clearly important to Sony, and the addition of playlists is an important first step in the right direction. They've heard your wants and grievances -- we're confident that future firmware updates will offer even more functionality. 2.00 may not be the Second Coming that everyone expected, but it's certainly a beneficial free upgrade. Now, let's begin counting down to the next firmware update.

I know alot of people have been waiting for this. Still no 1080i support :(

On the bright side though remote play is in which will make PSP owners pretty happy. And Playlists. Thank god I bought my PS3 now ... that's something I've considered to be "standard" for a long time now at least with my beloved 360.

Hot shit that sounds awesome, particularly the ability to control the XMB waves which astounded me that it wasn't available from the get go. I'm sat theres still no video playlist option however. Plus no in-game music selection.

EDIT: STill no word on the Home beta :( Ghey.

Remote start sounds kind of cool, apart from that there's not much that will affect me.

Does the music playlists mean I can listen to music while doing other things or is that still a no?

Well this is Sony we're talking about here. You cant say that word without at least one fistfight breaking out somewhere around here.

BTW. I think that remote control with the PSP is quite awesome. Ill have to try it out sometime.

i'm not sure what makes you think sony's obliged to re-invent their machine with every whole decimal place. it's a pretty good update

i'm really excited for in game xmb and music too, but i also have patience. i can be patient about it because they're putting a lot of work into these updates and i'm confident if it's possible, it will happen eventually. the updates may be lagging behind what the spoilt brats of the internet think they deserve, but if you look at what we're actually getting from sony in terms of added functionality and it's pretty hard to complain

    Fixed?

I'm not disappointed in this as I never even knew it was coming. I can turn my PS3 on with my psp if I ever should suddenly feel the urge, that's awesome enough for me.

Though I really would like to be able to play music while doing other things on it.

I really think they could roll out Home, even in Beta form, there are players using it so it is functional enough to let us have a bit of a mess about while they continue development.

I don't know how practical this is, but it sounds badass. When they say "PS3's content" does that include videos/TV shows? If so, :^:

What did you expect them to do? They were already at firmware 1.94, there wasn't anywhere else they could go (and remember, the 0.01 updates never really introduce many new features). Plus, the delay of Home meant that a lot of features that would've been included with this update, have been delayed until next year.

Anyway, decent update. Really like how they're including playlists for music and photos. The way they had it was absolutely shit (particularly with the photos), way worse than the PSP IMO. And the themes are a nice touch, I've already got around 20 for my PSP.

My PS3 is running in 1080i...maybe I'm missing something, what's the problem?

    Read this

Games will only display in 1080i if the developers code it in. If it's not enabled by the devs then the game downgrades to 480p.

Many older HDTV's (especially pre 2005 HD CRT's) only support 480p and 1080i resolution. Most PS3 games are 720p native. Unlike the 360 the PS3 won't upscale 720p games to 1080i ... instead it downgrades the image to 480p (non HD). So if your TV doesn't support 720p natively you are screwed.

I am one of the unfortunate one's with an older model CRT HDTV. This makes the difference on whether or not I'll buy certain games ... ESPECIALLY if I can get cross platform titles on the 360 which will upscale to 1080i.

Uh, am I missing something? Why is that a 2.0 upgrade? Looks more like a minor patch with a few features added. Why exactly is this 2.0 and not a 1.xx update?

What did you expect them to do? They were already at firmware 1.94, there wasn't anywhere else they could go (and remember, the 0.01 updates never really introduce many new features). Plus, the delay of Home meant that a lot of features that would've been included with this update, have been delayed until next year.

Anyway, decent update. Really like how they're including playlists for music and photos. The way they had it was absolutely shit (particularly with the photos), way worse than the PSP IMO. And the themes are a nice touch, I've already got around 20 for my PSP.

Know of any good sites for themes? All the ones I've seen have been kinda crummy.

Go here and have a look around. Go to the link at the bottom of the left column if you want to browse through them all. There are a lot of stinkers in there but you should still find some really good ones lying around.

I don't know how practical this is, but it sounds badass. When they say "PS3's content" does that include videos/TV shows? If so, :^:

Anything the PS3 can play. Music, movies, and photos. You can even send PSN messages while Remote Playing.

    Still no 1080i support :(

D: seriously this pisses me off...

Ah, ok. My TV supports 480p, 720p, and 1080i so I never noticed the problem. That does suck for people with older HDTVs.

awesome, something to play with when i get home!

i really like the looks of that 8-bit / pixelly theme pictured at the threespeech blog

i think the simplicity of the xmb's interface combined with the flexibility of custom backgrounds means we'll be seeing some really nice looking themes

right-o all youse, here's how to install a few more free themes, including the LCD one that i had my eyes set on:

    - have a thumb drive handy

    - use your pc to browse to this japanese site

    - download the three themes to your desktop by clicking on 'download'

    - move the files to your thumb drive under PS3 > THEME

    - put the thumb drive in your ps3's usb slot

    - go to theme settings > install

    - choose the thumb drive from the list of destinations

    - they'll pop up and you can install them

    - think about how awesome the uncharted demo will be tomorrow

    - maybe have a beer

this technique has worked very well for me tonight

Just been playing around with it for the past hour and I'm impressed (despite how god-damn slow it downloaded). You can now create "artificial" folders by changing the Album name of photos/games/demos/videos. I've now sorted my full games from the demos and PS1 games (which I called PSone because it looked fancier). The web browser is also MUCH faster, like upgrading from a bike to a Ferrari (which is why I'm posting from my PS3).

I'll look into picking up some themes later tonight.

I found that turning off the media sharing deal really helped, no more drops after that. But still you are right they need to address that issue. I don't know if you were seeing the same problems I was having, it would take forever to log in sometimes, connection would drop for no reason. I found that once I was in a multiplayer game, it seemedto hold up ok but if I were at the XMB, conectivity would be spotty at best. Turning off the Media sharing deal in settings fixed it up though.

Damn I want Home, oh yeah, where the hell is Little Big Planet?

Remote start sounds kind of cool, apart from that there's not much that will affect me.

Does the music playlists mean I can listen to music while doing other things or is that still a no?

You can already do this but its not mentioned ANYWHERE in the manual, the only indication is a half second flash of the PS button with the word menu beside it when you start a track. Press the PS button, thatll kick you back to the menu while keeping the music playing. Doing anything with media will stop it though, like editing track info or trying to import new tracks.

This is a pretty shitty 2.0 update i have to say, nothing in there that interests me at all.... a complete redesign of the PS Store would have been nice... that things fucking awful to use, if only for the sole fact that there is not hotkey for back.... having to scroll to the bottom of the screen can be a pain in the ass.

but there is a hotkey for back ... it's the same left trigger (might be left button, I forget) as the one you use in the web browser to go back a page.

Is it really so much to ask to have access to your freaking friends list while in a game?

There is a hotkey back, its for L1. And yeah the PSN store could do with a redesign, I mean I coulkdve done better back in secondary school web design.
