[Space On] Mario Galaxy: Fuck you, Gravity - That's one small step for Mario...
What?
Super Mario Galaxy is the next canon fully-platforming Mario game in the series, the previous being Super Mario Sunshine, which was met with... mixed reactions. Our eponymous plumber is launched into space in pursuit of Bowser (more princess-kidnapping shennanigans), and must visit and generally dick around in various differently-themed galaxies in order to... well, collect stars. Expect gorgeous visuals, tricky physics-based puzzles (when we say jump around, we mean jump around), a returning cast and intricate worlds. Difficulty is said to be between Mario 64 and SMS 'void level' difficulty.
“Every hundred years a comet passes over the Mushroom Kingdom and rains down magical stars and stardust, and as Princess Peach and the citizens of the kingdom are celebrating the centennial event, Bowser and his legions attack. As Mario attempts to put a stop to Bowser’s shenanigans, but things go awry: the next thing he knows, he finds himself on a mysterious moon high above the Mushroom Kingdom.”

playing as luigi is pretty damn sweet so far, but i need to get some sleep sometime. he seems alot faster than mario, but has an odd accecleration and deceleration. i don't know if the actual difficulty of the levels has changed at all, though
I am so looking forward to this and the second bonus after getting 120 stars with Mr. L
Wait. What?
ANOTHER bonus?
From gamefaqs (also on IGN):
To unlock the final star and galaxy, collect all 120 stars with Luigi and beat Bowser. Doing so unlocks the Grand Finale Galaxy, which is the Star Festival seen in the beginning of the game. Collecting the 100 purple coins in this galaxy gets you the final star.
Reportedly this last one is straight ridiculous in terms of difficulty.

I'm glad they use this control style for him, I like his loose controls in Lost Levels and SMB2. Hopefully it does change the challenge in the later galaxies.
it's hard to believe that a game could be this amazing. i don't know if I'll ever get tired of it. It's one of those games that I know I'll probably replay to 100% completion at least once a year for the next few years.
For reference, I'm at about 42 or 43 stars.
I do have a few gripes though. Some stars are way too easy to get, but those levels are pretty few and far between and are usually nothing more than introductory levels for galaxies. There's also been
one boss that's underwhelmed me. bowser jr is a pansy all around.
but holy crap. What a great game. I haven't felt this euphoric about a game since...maybe majora's mask or wind waker.
edit: you know what I just realized? Mario looks better at times in-game than he does in the render in the OP.
I'm not playing this game right now because I think I'm like 30 stars through (Just beat 3rd observatory), and I don't want it to end so soon
Is that bad?

...It's not fair; I have to go do stuff today (or I don't get paid type stuff) but Mario is calling. Mario and his fully orchestrated retro-awesome music.
Since everyone is giving mini-reviews, here is mine:
Basically Nintendo have forged an unholy union of crack cocaine and heroin and released it in disc form. There is no other suitable description.
It's a decent game. Not making me jizz from every pore, but I like it.
Either your pores or your testicles are defective. See a doctor.

So the Princess just sent Mario...
a Super Mario Bros. 3 letter, complete with powerups
...and I'm just giggling like a dumbass. The SMB3 nod at the end of Kamella's Airship Attack was also awesome. I was literally, "NO FUCKING WAY!" before the the star appeared.
This game. This game completely justified my Wii purchase, even if it's the only game I ever own for it (although it's not).
Ugh. There's something about this game that can warp space-time. I swear that I've only been playing for five minutes and it's already six o'clock AM. Today's going to suck.
Y'know, one of the most fun things about this is feeling it from Mario's perspective. He's a man on a mission again, gotta save that princess, but this is nothing like he's ever experienced before. He's gotta be loving this just as much as any of us, flipping around and spinning and yelling "WA-HOOO" at the top of his lungs. He's overjoyed.
Man this game is damn fine. Damn fine. It's been a while since I've played a game that has kept haunting me when I'm not able to play it. Damn you work. Damn you wife. Damn you life. You're all getting in the way of my Mario time!
We are .1% away from being able to change the thread title to 'Officially the best game ever'
according to gamerankings.
I got up to 51 stars last night, it went a bit slower without help, but it's awesome how different the game feels solo, compared to co-op. I still can't get over how inventive they are in this game. It's gratifying to think that I'm not progressing through this game to level up, find new items, or even to beat the story. I can't put the controller down simply because I want to see what they do next.
It's exactly like the wonder I felt the first time I played Mario 64. It's making me feel like a kid again, back when games were magical, not just technological feats.
I'm only 51 stars in, but I am prepared to say that Galaxy is my favorite game of all time. There, I said it.

Hell, I've only got 12 stars or so, and I'm already amazed at the crazy level of imagination that took place in this masterpiece's creation. I really haven't gushed this much for a game in a long time. I feel like I'm back in high school.
I want to just bring my fucking Wii to work. that's 8 hours in a day that I can't play Galaxy. it's bad enough I need to set aside time to sleep, now I have to work too? damnit I need to play this game.
I haven't really played much console games the last 4 months, especially the Wii so I was worried I'd just drop this after an hour or so.
Not the case at all - if anything this game has revived my old school gamer and hasn't let go. While the level design at times may look simple the overall mechanics of getting from point A to B is highly entertaining. I grew up with Mario so when my lil bro came in asking whats the big deal I gladly let him try the Manta Ray Race and the Galaxy where you have to roll on a huge ball.
After that he loved the humor of it but then he saw me do a few actual levels and was very impressed.
Right now I'm about 18 stars into this game but see no rush, I'm enjoying every corner of this game.

Wow, .1% away on GameRankings!? That's unbelievable. Considering how often we hear that ratings systems have changed, that times have changed... I didn't think anything would ever dethrone Ocarina on those rankings. I really want this to do it. Show the world that the Wii is capable of having the best-rated game of all time.
I'm almost 50 stars in after just two days, so I'm worried about beating it too soon... But then again, I'm only going to replay it, and when I get home, I get to game (and watch) with all of my friends. Had a very long phone conversation last night with a friend of mine; it's so difficult not to gush about this game. I blame the hype and forums like this one, but honestly, it stems from the game's greatness. I'm so blown away by the level design, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the number of side-scrolling sections. I asked the question last night... after this, where do we go? I was promptly told to keep my mouth shut. It'll be a long time before we get another new, wonderful Mario game... So we have to relish this one.
One other thing - I made the comment that a lot of the gaming experiences this year have been self-contained... Bioshock, for example, blew everyone away and was an immediate contender for GotY, but I haven't heard shit about it since everyone finished the game. 1up touched on this in their last 1up Yours podcast, actually, but yeah. Because there are so many games coming out, they're all getting lost in each other. I'm glad that (a) Galaxy is so different and awesome that it'll stand out for a long time to come, and (b) that the Wii isn't being flooded with AAA titles that force us to rush through this one. Maybe the Brawl delay was a good thing. There, I said it.
My brother picked this up after work yesterday. Just waltzed right into Best Buy and grabbed a copy.
He's only a handful of stars in but so far it's so awesome. Curses for our lack of fresh batteries, otherwise I would have joined in with co-op for a longer time.
Many, many awesome levels contained within. Especially in the lava galaxy. That shit is just gorgeous.
The purple coin star in the Dreadnaught galaxy is impossibly hard though, I died like 15 times never getting more than half the stars before giving up.
Also I beat the game (defeated Bowser, saved the princess), and all the people in the hub world are talking like I didn't, and Peach keeps sending me letters. Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

GAH too many spoilers.

Only 3 stars in, but this is all kinds of wonderful so far.

This is true. It startled me as I didn't expect it in a Mario game.
How bout them eels? Ahahahaha.
Knowing how much PAers hate underwater death creatures, those eels made me simultaneously laugh and be horrified.

I am man enough to admit that they really did make me jump coming around that abrupt corner and staring into the huge, bug-eyed face of toothy death.
Talk about a moment. Didn't expect that in a Mario game.
