Hi guys, I've been looking for a good RPG lately without luck and then I thought... why not check the PA forums.
So, idealy I want to try a SCI-FI RPG. I tried both KOTORs and they were fun but way too easy. And KOTOR 2 was so buggy I never got to finish it.
I'm done with MMOs for now so Eve-Online is out of the question (Besides, there is nothing to do). If there are no good sci-fi games right now I can settle for a Baldur's gate quality game.
troll/market research? it seems kind of sketchy (also really bad) first post. . .
It's something I would ask. You know, because I'd like an rpg......and a good one.

I dunno, it just seems like it's some cheap way to increase the amount of google hits on the term "mass effect"
the reason it is questionable is that this is his first post and he registered today, and if you haven't heard of Mass Effect by now and are a fan of sci-fi RPGs you must be living in a cave making paints out of animal blood for entertainment.
also, if the OP is serious I'll apologize now and offer Mass Effect and Fallout 2 as my suggestions.
Since you didn't mention any restrictions, Mass Effect is the obvious choice .
This right here.
There really aren't many SF RPGs out there though. Aside from what's been mentioned in the thread I guess there's Deus Ex and sequel, Fallout and sequel, and Anachronox (which I haven't played so I don't know how good it is).
Freelancer is a sort of RPG-lite in a sense. You gain levels, collect loot, upgrade your ship, do sidequests (bounty hunting missions and the like) and it has what amount to potions in its shield batteries/nanobots. On the other hand though you have no say in character creation and the actual storyline is completely linear, so depending on what you look for in RPGs it may or may not meet the criteria. Either way, it's a lot of fun, and I'm a big fan of the first three-quarters or so of the storyline (it kind of jumps the shark at the end though).
If you don't mind trying something not sci-fi, get Oblivion. It's probably the best RPG out at the moment. I don't know about Mass Effect yet because I haven't played it. But it looks so awesome. I can't wait to try it.
Any good RPGs for the DS? I see a handful every time I go to the store, but the titles are heavy on fantasy speak and made up words so I can never remember them long enough to seek out reviews when I get home.

if you haven't played it already Front Mission DS is great.
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
1 GB of some ram.
ATI Radeon X1650 PRO 512mb
What about NVN? Anything good over here?
If you mean NWN, then NWN2 is ok, nothing great and really long. Mask of the Betrayer the NWN2 expansion is the best RPG since Torment. However, the price of entry is pretty high as you really ought to at least know the how to play NWN2, and ideally have finished it. I hear the witcher is really good but I haven't actually played it (although I did buy it )

I've only ever heard terrible reviews of that title. I borrowed the game from a friend and started reading through the strategy guide... that made me not want to play it.
Anyway.
If you've got a 360, Mass Effect seems to be the way to go.
Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, and I've heard that the original Bioware Neverwinter Nights got really good in the expansions, though the main campaign was kinda dumb.
If you've got a PS2, I'd suggest Digital Devl Saga 1 & 2. Kick ass sci-fi/supernatural stuff.
I bought Star Ocean: Till the end of Time... And I got about 12 hours into it, but it felt like a chore to play it. I wanted to like it... I really did... But for some reason it just hurt me emotionally to keep playing it.
Get The Witcher. I have a AthlonXP 3200+ (32bit), 1 Gig of DDR400, and a 6600GT. It runs fine with all the graphics settings all the way down and still looks great. the only issues which is coming in the next patch rumored to be around Dec. 7th is goign to shorten the load times.
I played through on Normal difficulty and it was a blast. I'm playing through again on hard once the patch comes out.

I would definitely welcome any patch that sorts out the extraneous loading times in Witcher, as it is otherwise a fantastic game. I played half way through it, but the irritation was too much for me, especially as i love to explore everywhere and go into every home. But definitely something for all RPG fans to try.
I am also ashamed to admit that as an avid pc gamer i have never played a Fallout game, something i hope to rectify next week.
For all those who want decent RPGs for the DS, Zelda and the Phantom Hourglass is your best bet. Also, Maple Story DS is also coming out in the near future for you MMORPG people .
If you want a RPG with some FPS play hybrid, I recommend taking a look at Vampire:The Masquerade -- Bloodlines. You can get it on Steam for pretty good price (~$20) and it should run fine on your machine. There's two big threads (both a thread about the game and a "Let's Play" although I suggest not reading the Let's Play one if you're gonna get the game) about the game here and that's how I got into it. A very good RPG!
Planescape: Torment. GET IT NOW!
It can get kinda pricey to find a copy, I got lucky and found mine at a yard-sale a few years ago for 5 bucks. Easily would have paid 50 for it, it is seriously the best written game I have ever played and one of the few games I have played to have a compelling narrative.
Play it, and thank me later.
Eschalon Book 1 - Old school RPG that's just fannnnnnnnnntastic! I purchased it among the huge titles that came out recently and I've put just as many hours into this as SMG, ME, and RB.
im not one for hyperbole or fanboy support of a game, but mass effect will be staying in my sig for at least another week.
Haha I love you Scarab.
I just realised my insatiable love for Mass effect isnt exactly playing down the 'Scarab is an EA employee' thing that went on not long ago. some people were genuinely thinking i was an ea viral marketer.
Shit.
Seriously, I dont work for that magnificent company.

If you looking for old school RPG goodness, look for the old Phantasy Star games on the Genesis. Those were Sci-Fi-ish and amazing.

Go play Phantasy Star Universe.
Wow, a little paranoid?
And for every one else, I lolled.
Anyway, I'm not into games much anymore. I's still playing warcraft 3 and right now I only check out HL2 and SC2.
Deus Ex was awesome, the sequel, not as much.
I heard the name Mass Effect, thats it. Freelancer I checked it out but as you said, too linear.
Right now I was looking at "The Witcher". Is it any good?
Oh and BTW my computer sucks so I can't play Oblivion but it looked awesome.
Honestly, I was thinking the same thing.
If your computer can't run Oblivion, it won't be able to run The Witcher.
Maybe look into something a little less taxing. Spiderweb Software's games seem to be pretty popular, and Eschalon: Book 1 is also fun.
I can't be too careful when the man's always tryin' to steal mah brainwaves for profit!
if you haven't played it already Front Mission DS is great.
I remember hearing a lot of good things before and then nothing after.
But... I have no Xbox...
You mentioned your PC is crap, so Hellgate: London is probably out of the question.

with a machine like that check out Anachronox

I love the way you essentially say that, you know, if nothing better is out, I guess I could settle for the best RPG ever made.
If I have to.
I played through on Normal difficulty and it was a blast. I'm playing through again on hard once the patch comes out.
Get your ass down to best buy then.
it is completely worth buying the console for.

It can be. I hated it after about 4 hours. It's a great conversation system on top of really boring gameplay.
Haha I love you Scarab.
Explain yourself.
