I was looking into a used copy of Splinter Cell DA over at the gamestop website. I know, I'm just cheap. As hell. Anyway, I was trying to remember I had played this one before, because all the SC games just kind of blend together in my mind, so I looked down at the user reviews to try to get a sense of it. The second person to review it said that the story for the 360 version isn't as good as the story mode in the original xbox version.
This can't be right, can it? Did they really change the story line for the different versions? I mean, Call of Duty did it, but those were two completely different games, with different names. I know this is very late to bring this up, but ... I'm just... so confused right now.

The "next-gen" version (360, PC) was an entirely different game from the Xbox/Wii version.

I hear that the "next-gen" verison (360, PC made by Ubisoft Shanghai) isn't as good as the "last-gen" one made by Ubisoft Montreal. Someone may have better insight on this.
The Double Agent I played on oxbox was fantastic, not quite as good as Chaos Theory, but not far off, better from a story perspective (except maybe the ending)
I have heard this is not the case at all for the 360 version.
Edit: It is BC compatible with the 360 though, so you might want to just go for that one.

Right. oXbox DA is told as a series of flashbacks over a phone conversation between Fisher and the guy after him (FBI guy?). It also has a fully developed co-op campaign that runs parallel with the main game (First mission, where Sam is pulled out because of his daughter, the two-man team goes in the finish the task. Second mission is to start the riot in the prison and secure Sam's escape route.)
As for 360 DA... I have it but my copy freezes after I get out of the ice in the first mission.
From what I remember when I played through Double Agent on the 360, it seemed to have a lot of plot holes, and from what I recall, a lot of story details that didn't make sense on the 360 were fleshed out on the original X-box version..
Hell, I recall the Original Xbox version having a full co-op mode where the 360 version only had a Spy vs Mercenaries mode.

For me, the big difference was that the BEST part of Chaos Theory didn't appear in the 360 version: campaign co-op!! I assumed that they would take advantage of the double entendre thing w/ "double agent" and have an amazing co-op campaign. Instead, it was a watered down bot fest. Blech.
The original Xbox version (thank god for Ubisoft Montreal), though, has a great co-op experience. So, all is right with the world.
I have DOUble Agent for both the 360 and the Xbox and they're ENTIRELY different. The Xbox version has a different storyline (slightly) and offers more fluid gameplay than the 360 version. IMO it even looks better thanks to the 360 version having shit horrible screen-tearing.
I would imagine that the more "next-genish" version (yeah yeah it's current gen now but not when you release an Xbox version with it :P) is the "canon" one in line with Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory.
That being said, it is the weakest one so far out of the series. I am really looking forward to Conviction though as it seems kinda Assassin's Creedish with some really neat environment interaction.

I thought the same thing when playing AC.

He means the Story for Splinter Cell: Double Agent (360), isn't as good as the Story of Splinter Cell (xbox) I assume.
edit: or not (see below)

Check out the Wikipedia article. It's strikingly thorough.
