Been pimping out my PSP. Got all my music, porn and such loaded and ready for portable use :)

I also downloaded Warhawk and Castlevania, I got the Daxter + 1 Gig + Family Guy bundle, and ordered Killzone and MGS off Amazon.

Well that's dumb. My PSP won't load the killzone update, tells me the game can't be loaded. So I load KillZone in the hopes it'll let me load it from the memory stick, nope, still wants to make a wifi connection and get it from the website. Fucking ridiculous.

Any suggestions, am I missing something?

I'm not sure, but did you put the patch in the right file? Check the Readme file attached to the downloaded patch and see.

No, that patch was the new files directly from my memory stick.

You should be able to just dump it under the /PSP/GAME folder and it should run fine.

I'm pretty sure it's ok for all regions though you might want to compare your box code with the folder name.

There was no readme. I placed the entire folder with the chapter5 data file, eboot file, and some file called "KZL.PRX" into root/PSP/GAME on the memory stick, just like with game demos and the firmware update I also manually installed. Which brings up another question I have. I discovered manually loading the firmware update doesn't get rid of the default firmware update option under the game menu on the PSP, that I'm assuming would happen when you update over wifi. Kind of annoying, because if I accidentally select it instead of the current update, I could screw my firmware. I can't seem to get rid of it, as there's no file related to it on the memory stick, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, not sure what to do for either issue.

Edit: Nevermind about the second question, I guess. I tried applying the old firmware update and it detects the newer firmware and disables the installation.

The old firmware is always on there. Depending on which psp you have, it'll have the default for that model.

Killzone and MGS are pretty good. Well, MGS is more like EXTREMELY AWESOME.

Oh, and I think that the PSP demands progressive scan in order to play games on TV because it has a non-interlaced lcd screen, so, in order to output a 480i signal, it would need to do extra processing... And that wouldn't be a good thing.

There is no readme because I uploaded the file in the first place
I hope you placed the actual ULUSxxxxx whatever folder in /PSP/GAME, not the files inside the folder. If that still doesn't work, like I said, check the actual region code. It may require different files for it. If it still doesn't work tell me and I'll upload my savedata, then you can try with that.

Also you will never be allowed to use an earlier firmware update even though the option is there so don't worry. If you want to remove it you need CFW though.

Most probably you forgot to set the correct frame rate for video. Check the options in your transcriber and the real frame rate at which the video stream is supposed to be played at.

I made sure that was correct, it doesn't have any issues with standard avi files, its only when I'm trying to convert hi definition videos that I run into problems.

When you say "hi-def" you mean like full 1080p-sized widescreen movies? Because if so they could have a really retarded frame rate like 24.9999 fps or something like that; or does your audio go totally out of sync right at the start of the movie? Ok I guess this kind of holds true for all videos but I've noticed my DVD videos seem to employ stupid frame rates like those.

Other than CPU lag or a bug in your transcriber I can't think of any other reason that would happen but I'm not a real videophile anyway. I'd suggest that if you had video editing software to realign the audio/video tracks manually and reexport though that is quite the pain in the ass I suppose.

Not that intensive, but the audio is initially fine, then begins to skip or repeat itself for half a beat, then gradually goes out of sync every 10 seconds or so.

Hey look I got a PSP for Christmas!

A few questions as this was not a product I was investigating.
    1) I know there are two models, do I need to worry about that while looking for a carrying case? The packaging is unclear.
    2) Why the hell can't I find Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops anywhere?
    3) I have the white Star Wars one. Is there anyway to make it less stupid looking?
    4) The disc drive on this doesn't seem to close quite right. So far it works just fine, but the side of the lid that is not where you open it sticks out a few millimeters during use. Is that normal?

    1) The newer version of the PSP (what is called Slim, or PSP-2000) is about 2/3rds as thick as the original, so though it will fit in the carrying case, it wont be snug. Thus, it wont be as effective. In Canada, I cannot seem to find any cases that are for the slim model, but have seen a bunch in the states (online).

    2) I've seen it in some stores, but you probably have to really search around to find it. It's what I've noticed about a lot of PSP games, that though there are some good games that I want for the system, most of the time I'm in a store, they wont have it (it's either sold out, or most often, they just do not carry it anymore).

Not sure about 3, though I guess when you find a case, you could cover it. I have seen faceplates for PSP, but I've not tried them so I dunno if they are worth putting on.

    4) Took out my psp and I do not seem to have this issue (I have the silver one from the daxter bundle).

Ah I didn't see this. Um did you trying playing your exported movies in any media player and checking the console for information about the audio track? There might be inherent decoding errors during playback which is causing the slowdown.

Other than that (or a buggy transcriber) I'm not really sure why this would only happen with 1080p movies. Not sure whether content protection would have anything to do with this but I doubt it anyway.

The Syphon Filter games are actually realy well done. I didn't play much of the first one, but the second one really reminded me a lot of Gears of War mixed with Splinter Cell, with those sort of duck-and-cover firefights mixed with the ability to sneak up on people and silently destroy them.

So why do the reviews of this Battlefront game I got for free say the game is pretty good, but the actuality is that it is an ugly and unplayable mess? The single player is just ugly, but I just tried "Infrastructure" (WTF?!) mode and a whole bunch of random stuff seemed to start happening.

I'm not sure about the reviews, but I bought the original Battlefront game the other day, and it is one of the most terrible games I've played in recent memory. The graphics are horrendous, the gameplay itself is very poorly done, and there wasn't even infrastructure mode. If you want a good shooter on the PSP, stay away from the Star Wars games.

Portable Ops: I've seen it in stock a few times over here: http://www.gamequestdirect.com/083717260318.html and that's not a bad price. Dunno about shipping, though. I found my copy at a random Toys R Us for $10.

The Metal Gear Acid games might be worth looking into if you like Metal Gear, SRPGs or Card games. I don't like SRPGs or Card games, but I'm balls deep in Acid 1 and I'm having a great time.

Don't ever trust any review of any PSP game. Ever.

    Except mine, of course.

No but honestly looking at Metacritic's top 10 PSP titles only one of them happens to be good and maybe another is ok, one more is great and the rest are all horribly mediocre.

Yeah, I saw Battlefront in Gametrailers 'Best PSP Games of 2007' video and I was clueless. The graphics look like absolute shit and the gameplay didn't look that much better. Why Silent Hill: Origins, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow or Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles weren't given a place, I have no idea.

Btw, 'Infrastructure' is online multiplayer, while 'Ad-hoc' is wireless multiplayer. I don't know why they didn't give them decent names but I guess it's because the PSP came out too early to integrate into Sony's PSN.

I love how in the commercial for that pack, the gameplay is so choppy, the explosions look like something from a Polish Cartoon, and the draw distance was about two feet away from the character.

I know its probably too late, but owning both the original and PSP "Lite"(sic) I would say try to get an original PSP. The new model feels far too flimsy and cheap in my opinion, and while it could just be me, I don't get the same sort of tactile feedback from pushing the new models 'trigger' buttons like I did for the original. Am I the only one who thinks Older Model > Newer Model?

I bought the white PSP Slim too, solely for the white color (which I liked better than the gray, didn't want to wait for the black and thought my PSP Phat was too smudgy anyway). I believe that you can buy a different battery cover if you don't like the Darth Vader on the back, but it doesn't bother me nearly as much as I thought it would, and you don't see it while playing anyway.

As far as slim cases, you might want to look at import sites like Play-Asia or YesAsia if you want a Slim-specific case, or otherwise go for soft padded cases that let you strap the system in. When I bought my Slim, the employee there actually gave me a freebie Star Wars Battlefront soft case which I think was intended for the Phat but works great for my Slim.

And I didn't even give Star Wars Battlefront II a try. I considered it a "$20 off a game you actually want" coupon at GameStop, though I don't know what the trade-in value is now.

You're not the only one but I can't fathom why the handful of people think this way. The system is noticably lighter, which I find much more comfortable, plus the new D-pad is miles better than the shoddy old version. It's ultimately a judgment call, but I also think people who prefer the DS Phat to the Lite are bonkers too. :P

Obviously not as much of a visual difference, but I think actually interacting with the unit is pretty different. It's all relative, though; the weight of the old PSP was my biggest complaint with the system, followed by how crappy D-pad diagonals were, so when the white Slim came out I sold off my old one and picked up a new one for about $50 difference, which wasn't bad by any means. The TV-Out is a pleasant bonus, though I have yet to actually try it (want to solely for DJ Max Portable 2, though).

64 MB of ram compared to 32 MB in the original and the extended Battery Life (the 1200 mAh battery has the same battery life in the slim as the 1800 mAh that the original has) are very nice new features that the Slim has.

Though, the biggest reason I wanted the Slim over the original is TV out. Though this might not be big for most people, for me it was huge. See, I do not really enjoy handhelds for the most part. Yes, it's nice being able to play it at lunch at work or on the plane or something similar; but when I get home, I'd rather not look at the small screen for I wont be comfortable (compare to say playing on my monitors). But, the idea that I can just plug my PSP into my monitors, or when I'm visiting family to their tv, for me, pro-longs the life of the PSP.

Now, it's like a portable console that's very convenient. With great additional features such as music and movies.

I've played movies and games off of my psp on TVs and it's been really nice. I have been very impressed by both the picture and the sound quality from the movies that I put on my system. It was also really nice playing 2 player hot seat games like Worms as well for both players do not need to stare at the small screen. (granted I say small screen only relatively to the TV or monitors I've been using. It really is a beautiful screen)

I don't quite understand it either. While I can see some merit to the UMD case feeling a bit cheap/flimsy I can't understand that complaint when you apply it to the system as a whole. Yes it's made of plastic but it is lighter, it's even lighter than my DS lite. I mean, what do people do with their systems that it being plastic makes it feel cheap? Do people have PSP hurling contests? Do they bend it to see how far it'll bend? Worried their dog will try to hump it???

That being said I think Chewywaffles has a point. It's not such an improvement that you have to upgrade if you have a PSP phat.

Slim has no available 1.50 kernel --> older homebrew apps which haven't been updated won't work.

    No thank you.

TV-Output is touted as such a humoungous feature but seriously a PSP TV Output at 480x272...yea that isn't exactly super-awesome or something. Plus it's not impossible for the 1000 to get video output anyway.

Er, let me rephrase, being a brand-new PSP Slim owner - any non-homebrew... oh nevermind. YouTube isn't all that important to me anyway.

    Other questions:

    1. Best program to convert videos from MPEG2 to PSP? Someone answered this for me already, but it got eaten when they deleted the XMas forum.

    2. Is there a way to get the God of War demo (again, with no hax)?

    1. Mediacoder

    2. It's a little big to host at around 232 MB though. Maybe someone else is feeling bored. Either that or just Google for it. And demos do not require anything special to run

You can't view youtube vids proper w/o PSPTube, which is kind of the point why it was coded up in the first place.

The big reason I got a slim was for the apparent d-pad and button improvement, and increased memory. But I've never used a phat, so can't compare the buttons, and as far as I've heard, load-times have changed little or have, in some cases, become longer. And after using the slim for a while, I think I might have appreciated the extra thickness of the phat; the slim is terribly uncomfortable for my hands, but that's partly because the analog stick placement is shit.

One plus is I don't have to bring the stupid brick and plug-in cable when I travel, as I usually bring my laptop, so I can just charge my psp with the USB cable.

As far as case strength, it seems fine, but I think the UMD door/cover could be sturdier.

Man every time one of the PSP threads come up there's a full list of games that are inevitably posted in it

Then when they disappear from view the question comes back and then this list must be re-made

    SO:

Presenting the awesome list of awesome for now and forever as far as 2007 is concerned:

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (JPN)
    Monster Hunter Freedom 2
    Silent Hill: 0rigins
    Patapon (JPN)
    Jeanne D' Arc
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
    SOCOM: Tactical Strike
    Wipeout Pulse

For the proud new owners or people who hate the PSP but secretly hold onto it waiting for someone like me to actually come up with titles that you might like (other than those already mentioned:

    Killzone: Liberation
    Tekken 5 DR
    Burnout Dominator
    LocoRoco
Lumines (meh I'm not so sure but it's kind of fun; I can see the mixed opinions on this though)
Metal Slug Anthology (only because of the 6th iteration essentially)
    Wipeout Pure

I'm not going to comment on games still in development because frankly that's kind of cruel, to punish yourself waiting for titles to come out.

The ceramic white PSP of old actually has the same d-pad structure as the Slim. I have never ever felt that the d-pad problem with the black original PSPs was that significant though (yes I played SF Tekken and a hell lot more stuff on it) so make of that what you will.

Load times are more dependant on the CPU speed you're running your PSP at. This could be why the Phat (stop calling it that!) may seem to outperform the Slim; most Slim PSPs are not configured to run at maximum clock speed unlike the people who have been using CFW on their old PSPs. However in games that require a lot of caching (such as Crisis Core) the Slim may see certain improvements in gameplay, though so far having compared my PSP to that of a video on Youtube I saw no significant difference. Meaning no difference.

The PSP is admittedly not the most ergonomic piece of hardware in the world, but it's ok for me. Of course you're talking to someone who finds the old PSP actually too slim (my acrylic cover casing actually bulks it up a bit and makes it infinitely more comfortable for me) so when I got to handle a slim for the first time I was actually kind of certain I wouldn't enjoy it. It was ok, but I think I prefer my acrylic casing.

You can already charge your PSP through USB via CFW and an extension.

So I tracked down Vice City Stories today and Metal Gear Ac!d 2. Is there any good reason to pursue Ac!d if I have Ac1d 2?

I still have no lead on the original Portable Ops, nor on Disgaea. I also can't think of a single other game I want that is out or is coming out. Is the PSP in its waning year?

MGA1 is decent but not as good as Acid 2. That said, if you like Acid 2 then you'll probably like Acid 1.

As for other games that are out, have you checked out all the demos available at PSP Fanboy and on the PS Store?

If you want recommendations, then I can recommend Killzone: Liberation, both the Syphon Filter's (Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow), SOCOM: Tactical Strike, Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Final Fantasy Tactics, Jeanne d'Arc and Silent Hill: Origins.

No upcoming games you say? Off the top of my head, here's a few I'm looking forward to:
Echochrome (though it'll also be available on the PS3 Store)
    Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
    Final Fantasy Dissidia
God of War: Chains of Olympus
    Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
    Patapon
    Star Ocean: First Departure
    Star Ocean: Second Evolution

After ordering Disgaea from Amazon, I have since seen it stockpiled in nearly every store I go into. Even if the store doesn't usually sell video games at all, they'll have piles of Disgaea. Ok, maybe not every store, but a surprising amount.
