Buying a PSP

So I'm looking at finally making the plunge and buying a PSP. I feel there are enough good titles around to justify the purchase. My only concern however is I'm torn between the PSP and a new ipod. Looking around online however I see that the PSP can function as an MP3 player, and because I'd be buying the Daxter pack with the 1gb memory stick I feel that would fill my need for the ipod.

So how well does the mp3 functionality work? How do you transfer mp3's to the PSP?

Right now I'm looking at snagging Castlevania, Metal Gear PO, Mega Man Powered Up, and the Tales of games on the system. What else should I grab? Anything import worthy?

They function like another hard drive - drag and drop into the music folder and play on your PSP. No stupid software to install.

I'd also grab Puzzle Quest if you haven't played it yet. Fantastic game and should be cheap these days. Oh, and if you enjoy anime-type golf, Hot Shots Open Tee is still a can't-miss classic. I've put doezens and dozens of hours into that game and still haven't unlocked it all.

Like that other guy said, Puzzle quest is a must.

Get Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactis: War of the Lions, or Jeanne d'Arc if you like SRPGs.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is great too, and I also got Metal Gear Acid 2.

I got a PSP recently myself, finally convinced by Castlevania, Disgaea, and FF: Tactics. Castlevania is a ton of fun, and I recommend the other two as well as Jeanne D'arc if you're into SRPGs. The Siphon Filter games, from what I've played, are surpisingly well-done portable shooters if that's your bag.

mp3 functionality is reasonably good, I haven't had any problems with the player, but the interface isn't as convenient as dedicated mp3 players, the PSP itself is a bit big, and I find the size of the stick limiting for holding music. Overall it hasn't convinced me to retire my other players unless I only have room to carry one device with me. Getting files on is easy, they can be copied to the card and read from there with no intervening software, and the PSP can connect with a mini-USB-USB cable.

As an mp3 player the PSP sucks. It lacks a lot of the functionality you'd expect from a mp3 player. Also, whenever I leave the music menu it seems to shut off the music for me. Maybe someone will correct me and I'm completely wrong. But it's not really built to be a mp3 player so I can't complain.

As for games, there's tons of must have games. Here's a few of my favorites:
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness - a port of one of the best SRPGs I've ever played
Final Fantasy: Tactics - same as above
Brave Story - JRPG that i've been playing through and I'm enjoying it very much
    Lumines- Awesome Puzzle game
Valkyre Profile - remake/port of an awesome JRPG

Having these games on a portable makes me wish I had longer train journeys to and from work. If you don't like RPGs though I'm sure someone else will be able to suggest more games, I just have a strong liking for them.

GTA Vice and Liberty City Stories are pretty good efforts to bring the series onto a portable.
Rathet and Clank - Size Matters is great
Tekken 5 - Its Tekken in your pants!
Me and my Katamari - only for short bursts and if you can put up with Japanese craziness
Final Fantasy Crisis Core - Out in Japan, if you can understand Japanese you'll probably want to pick it up.
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 - If you can encourage friends to get a copy too, then this is well worth it.

Keep an Eye out for God of War PSP - word is the Demo was awesome.

You can leave the menu using the Home button and the music will not stop playing. You can do jack shit tho: checking your battery life and stuff still stops the music.

In the later firmware revisions, you can watch photos without the music stopping, but that's about it.

I just got the Daxter pack as well. The Silver color looks really nice and I think they upgraded the scratch protection on the slim screens.

I picked up Metal Gear, GTA: Vice City, and LocoRoco. I also downloaded Destruction Derby and Wild Arms from the new PSP store on for the PC. Destruction Derby is just as good as I remember and I Wild Arms is a pretty decent standard RPG.

All I need in way of an MP3 player is something to last me in the 15-20 minute walk to and from classes, so extra bells and whistles aren't that important. For what I'd use an ipod for the PSP makes much better sense. I remember the launch, saw a buddies and went meh, and wrote it off until now. Oh what a fool I am.

Oh snap I forgot Loco Roco as well. How's Crush? It looked like a great concept.

Yep, I was looking recently, and wondering when the PSP got such an excellent library. I mean, it had some great games before, but now it's just epic.

Also, Monster Hunter Freedom/Monster Hunter Freedom 2. I'd just say "Get 2", but they won't let me import my guy from the original. ):<

EDIT: I also really wish that I had the new one you can plug into your TV.

Component, I don't know if I'm setting it up right or I got the right TV for it. The cable itself is a Powerwave Component Adapter - Two red, one green, one white and one blue plugs.

The side of my TV has a Red, Yellow and White connection and two rows of the same at the back. I've set it up in the Slim's Menu, but it just does not like it.

Make sure you plug the red cables in the proper slots. Red and White that should be next to each other are audio, the rest go in the 3 video slots.

Once you plug it in, go into the options, and there are video out settings. Set the size of your TV (4:3 or 16:9 if Widescreen). Then set it to interlaced or progressive.

If you set it to progressive, and nothing shows up. Try interlaced. If that works, then your TV does not support progressive scan and you can't play games, but you can watch videos and such.

It's easy really. If at any point you don't have a screen on either the PSP or TV, which will happen if you set it to progressive and the TV doesn't support it, just disconnect the PSP, turn it off and back on.

Oh, and if you enjoy anime-type golf, Hot Shots Open Tee is still a can't-miss classic. I've put doezens and dozens of hours into that game and still haven't unlocked it all.

You may just want to wait a few months and pick up the sequel (which was just released in Japan).

First off, go to the PSP Store, check out the stuff and download some demos. If you want more demos, you'll be able to find them here.

Anyway, my quality PSP game list:
    Crush (Puzzle)
    Daxter (Platformer)
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (SRPG) - Port of the PS2 version with added content.
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions (SRPG) - Port of the PS1 version with added content and a little slowdown.
    Jeanne d'Arc (SRPG)
    LocoRoco (Platformer)
    Killzone: Liberation (Action)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (Action)
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (Platformer)
    Silent Hill: Origins (Survival Horror)
    SOCOM: Tactical Strike (Action/Strategy)
    Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (Action)
    Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (Action)
Tales of Eternia (RPG) - Port of Tales of Destiny II for the PS1, only released in Europe, so you'd have to import it.

    And the upcoming games:
    Echochrome (Puzzle)
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (Action RPG)
    Final Fantasy Dissidia (Fighting)
God of War: Chains of Olympus (Action)
Hot Shots Golf Portable 2 (Sports)
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (Action RPG)
Patapon (No clue what genre it is, I'm just going to go with Strategy)
    Secret Agent Clank (Platformer)
Star Ocean: First Departure (Action RPG)
Star Ocean 2: Second Evolution (Action RPG)

Also, there's no Castlevania on any of my lists because it's due for release over here early next year.

Awesome. I think everyone forgot about it after it was released, which is a shame because it's a damn fun game. It blends the puzzle and platformer elements together well, and the difficulty rises at just the right rate.

My only real problem is that when it’s all said and finished there isn’t any real replay value. A level creator like the one in Mega Man Powered Up would have been awesome, but I digress.

I haven't actually finished it but from the 50%+ that I played, I really enjoyed it.

As for Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (which I'm guessing is the other Tales game you're talking about), I'm not sure about it. It sounds like a fanservice game for Tales fans and since Eternia is the only one I've really played, I'm not sure I'd be into it. I've no clue why they didn't localise Tales of Destiny 2 (not to be confused with the original US name for Tales of Eternia, Tales of Destiny II) instead, since the PS2 version was never released outside of Japan.

Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles is so good. So good. I'm actually surprised at how few stinkers I've run into, but one that I can't really recommend is Dungeon and Dragons Tactics. I'm sure some people will disagree, but the game is really just too slow paced to be good as a portable game. It would have been much better as a fleshed-out console or computer title.

It really is a fantastic game. I wouldn't say the learning curve is all that brutal, it is just that the game is hard as shit. It just keeps kicking you in the nuts and you keep asking for more because it is just silly fun. So far I have Metal Gear, Disgeae, Monster Hunter 2 and Killzone. Everyone was worth the asking price but Killzone has recieved the most love from me. I have the Powerstone Collection shipping to me right now at $20 I just don't see how you can go wrong with it.
