Anyway, after the glut of games I had to buy this year, I sort of missed out on Bioshock, which rumor has it is fairly decent. So, I went ahead and picked it up. Only a few hours in (just killed my first Big Daddy), and my impressions so far.
- Pretty game, with really good design. The 'underwater art deco' thing is a pretty new look for a game. And so far Rapture is interesting. I assume as I go on I'll learn more of what happened to turn the place from sudeo-utopia to underwater nightmare?
- Voice acting has been fairly good, with some of the folks (the first guy you hunt down, that Doctor) being downright creepy. And as a side, Atlas is gonna end up being evil, isn't he? I'm trying to remember the last time the whole 'Hey, I'm gonna talk to you on the radio all game and be your friend, but wait till you find out who I really am." didn't end up leading to the guy being evil.
- I'm sort of a wuss at scary games, and already Bioshock is starting to get to me. Anytime all the lights go out I get a little freaked, and the monster in the closet stuff is just wrong.
But all in all, very good game so far. I'm gonna take my time, explore, hear all the diary's I can.

But be glad you got it, because its a marvelous game that I should really complete.
2) Lets just say the plot twist in Bioshock is not what you, or anyone else, thought it would be.
3) It gets much much much much scarier. If you are scared or freaked in the first few hours, you will be shitting yourself five times a minute in Fort Frolic.
You really wanna do that with this game. I think (just my opinion here) it's got the best storyline of any game released this year.
That's all I have to add to this thread at this point, just that I'm late to the party as well. So...you're not alone.
Shit, the Evening with Sander Cohen alone was award worthy (Fort Frolic, as others here call it).
Fort Frolic is definitely a area, and I'm a total wuss gamer. I always felt that the initial areas had better scripted events, though, like
And I definitely felt compelled to go back and replay the game after it was all over due to what happens in the last segments. I found the final section a little uneven as compared to the rest of the game's quality but it's still something every 360 owners should ride through at least once.
but actually playing it was a different story. I just couldn't get into it, the FPS part just never felt right to me.
Big daddies are easy once you get the "protect me big daddy" plasmid. Get one to cover you, and attack another (levels are open ended, you can take one to the other, just have to time it right so the one you're going to kill has the sister). It goes from impossible, to very possible since after the two duke it out, the remaining one with the sister will have very little HP. Time to get those armor piercing bullets to work there.
You should really pick up Persona 3 then. The story is so amazing. Well, if you enjoy RPGs at least.
The game did have enough gameplay flaws however that I doubt I'll replay it. The over abundance of resources and Adam somewhat spoils the game's RPG elements, and the gun play is only moderate in quality.
It is a story everyone should experience though, and it deserved all the attention it received.

Did that as well 2 weeks ago. Really reminded me how great the game is. It's one of the most well-told, if not the most well-told, story in a game ever, imo. Rapture is such an amazing place, and the audio diaries are so well done... The story is just in every single thing that you see. Nothing in the game isn't relevant to the story somehow. It's really really unique and well done, and I hope we see more of that indirect storytelling in games. The
My GOTY. The gameplay isn't the best in the world, but the game is just so much more than the sum of its parts.
I would have to agree. Definitely take your time and explore. If you race through the game like a standard FPS you miss out on so much of the experience.
you can easily do that with one file.
Wanna know how? check the spoiler
You don't get that plasmid on the evil path. Killing BDs on hard without Vitachambers and without that plasmid is fucking hard.
I never had that much trouble, except for like the first 3-4 BDs in the game, because of the lack of good weapons/ammo/cash. At about Arcadia though, I didn't have much trouble anymore. Grenades/electrobuck combo works well. Stun him with the elec-buck, grenade, switch back, rinse and repeat.
When I played the demo, I felt the Revivals were total weak sauce. It was the game saying " Oh hahha, you suck! let me fix you up." I do need to buy bioshock. I will eventually.
Yeah, but to be fair, how can you balance a game where you do not know how much life, EVE, ammo, and what weapons the player has. It's not like you can just grind and get these things. Often I have been stuck due to being out of EVE or been really really cautious because I only have Pistol ammo left. If you play wisely you should be okay but sometimes playing it on hard and trying to take down a Big Daddy can really drain ALL of your resources. I've beaten a Big Daddy before and then, wow... 1 health pack left, no Eve, hardly any ammo left...
Also, as an Irish person, Atlas' accent makes me laugh.
"You should go to fairmer's mairket".
Also yeah, the Splicers in the endgame take waaaaay too much damage. Not very satisfying when you have to pump an entire clip of machine gun rounds into them before they die.
You cannot purchase everything, but buy whatever you feel you want to play with and will match your style. If you want to play the game on hard and not use vita chambers, then you will want to get the health and Eve extension upgrades. If you just want to have fun, then grab fun shit like the bees plasmid and other fun stuff like that.
You have enough to experiment with, but not enough to waste, if that makes any sense.
I'm with you on this one. I just didn't have any drive to keep going.
Also, the wrench is your friend. By the end of the game, it is far stronger than any gun, if you use the right spells, er, biotics, er, plasmids.
If they released an expansion that augmented the regular game to include 3 more areas an a tonne more story elements with diaries before the riots/downfall and stuff during I would be all over that.
The only caveat to this is that if you're going for the tonic collector achievement, you do somewhat have to try to buy all the tonics you can, which means you can't go too crazy upgrading health/eve every time... it's actually a lot easier now with the (3, I think?) new 1 adam downloadable tonics, but it'll still be close
but yeah, otherwise just have fun... you won't have enough for everything, but don't feel bad about buying the insect swarm plasmid or anything like that
Ouch. I didn't play the evil path, I'm a stickler for lightside.
Yeah, that's even harder then. I remember the first 4-5 big daddies when I didn't have that plasmid, were goddamn hard to beat, reloaded at least 10 times on each one.
Game of the Year?
I disagree. Vehemently.
I liked Bioshock just fine, but I didn't find it nearly as good as some our. It does a lot of things I felt were done better in other games this year. Very linear and repetitive..
