During my sophmore year of college (near senior year now) i started having to wake up in the early morning to take a piss. Gradually this has become a nightly occurance. I tried asking my doctor and he said to reduce my sodium intake and not drink too much before i go to bed. My diet is not the healthiest at university, but it isnt a strict one of beer and burgers from the cafeteria either.
I recently returned from Europe where i was studying a semester and did not have this problem. I wrote this off as a change in diet but noticed i actually drank more alcohol there and wasnt very careful about eating healthy. So i just got back and literally the night i returned i had to wake up at 4am to go to the bathroom again! I couldn't believe it, it cant be my diet because it started up again immediately as soon as i slept in my own bed in the states.
Does anyone have any theories on what this could be? Climate? I cant imagine its diet with the immediate transition i experienced. My doctor when asked kind of shrugged it off as a minor deal but it really sucks having to wake up in the middle of the night. Thanks in advance for the help

It's probably something subconscious you aren't even noticing. Like maybe there is a train or a noise or something around that time that's waking you up and you just don't realize it.
Actually I have this problem as well. I wake up several times at night -- usually once every two hours or so -- with an intense thirst, which seems quenchable only by chugging large amounts of orange juice, it seems. After that I crash, then two hours later, rinse and repeat.
At first I thought this was stress-related; recently I went through the job-hunting process and I was constantly excited and worried for interviews and whatnot. On top of this I had midterms and finals, so I was fairly stressed out.
But now I have a job, and it's Christmas break, and I'm back home, which is the most stress-free environment ever. Yet I still wake up at night. Furthermore, I'm finding out that I can only sleep for 5-6 hours a night now. After that I wake up and can't go back to sleep. This results in me getting really sleepy in the middle of the day though, which sucks.
Anyway, my bed is comfortable, my room is at optimum temperature, is dark and pretty quiet save for the occasional car outside. I refrain from eating heavy meals before bed, and I don't drink that much either (usually a beer or two once or twice a week, nothing serious). I exercise, take my vitamins, and get plenty of good sex too, so I don't know what the problem is.
The thing is, it cant be a train or something subconcious because this happens to me at home in MI and at school in PA. I dont think its something wrong with my prostate because it went away while in Europe, and just hit immediately when i was back in the US, literally in the space of 24 hours.
My life is incredibly stress free, i have a great social/academic/atheltic life, work out regularly, etc... I'd say im pretty fit mentally and physically, its just the damn getting up in the middle of the night to piss. The nature of waking up is has everything to do with needing to go to the bathroom, like i drank a pot of coffee before i went to bed or something. Ive tried deliberately to experiment with what i do before bed to try and ID whats causing it (i.e. drinking pop or caffeine before and then drinking water then drinking nothing at all for a few hours before i sleep) It doesnt vary on season, but it seems to happen a little less when im in PA.
My theory is leaning somewhere towards climate but i have no evidence. Could i be just psyching myself out on this problem? Ive never had a problem like that before so no idea how to tell if im mentally causing this. thanks for the help so far

That's what I'm thinking at this point. It shouldn't be medical, since it comes and goes. Hell, I'll have spells where I wake up in the middle of the night, but they go away.

This used to happen to me all the time, and still does pretty often, though its much better now. I noticed that when I'm at work I drink a lot, way too much in fact. To the point where I'm still drinking when I'm not thirsty and I'm full... usually I drink water, but it was still just too much quantity.
When I lived in Thailand for a year this didn't happen nearly as much. I noticed I was drinking less at work, and certainly less caffeine (for some reason I equate drinking caffeine to having to pee more often). I rarely drink/drank caffeine after noon, but it still seemed to be an issue for me. Now, if I consciously drink less especially once I get home from work I'm much better at sleeping through the night.
Like ege I often wake up with a super-dry mouth going and seemingly /need/ to drink large amounts of something (for me its sparkling water though) and then I can go back to sleep only to wake up 2 hours later. I recommend a humidifier to make your throat less dry while sleeping (I equate that not happening to me while in thailand to extreme humidity... all the time.

I've never heard of a condition where a person is thirsty during the night because they aren't having enough sex
ege, do you sleep with a fan? My room gets really dry easily since I have a fan going all night. Try using a humidifier?

Do you have a television in your room? Do you watch it before going to bed? That might be a problem.
Also, if you have a tendency to hang out a lot in the room where you sleep, then your body is conditioned NOT to sleep when you are there, making it more difficult to stay asleep. The best thing to do is be in the room only for sleeping; do all your studying and socializing elsewhere. That should train your body to associate "room" with "sleep" after a week or so.
I used to wake up at be able to wake up 5 minutes before my alarm nearly 100% of the time before I moved hemispheres. Now I can't do that anymore - I've been woken by my alarm more in the last 6 months than I have in the previous decade!
Oh and I had a pint of coffee at about 3pm today and its now 12am and I feel like I could be up for hours to come. I didn't do that intentionally but I tried out a new cafe and asked for a large mocha, which turned out to be a triple shotted one pint monster. Next time I'll ask before I order.

Slightly off topic, but be careful with all that acid in the orange juice, it'll wreck havok on your teeth overnight.

read the section on nighttime polyuria. It could be something serious like kidney disease, but I wouldn't worry. It's probably just your prostate.
He said he didn't have the problem the whole time he was in europe though, that kind of stuff doesn't just come and go.

Wait, aren't your parents doctors?
