i dunno...probably galaxy. but I really, really loved zack and wiki. A bunch of friends and I just stayed up way too late trying to figure out the puzzles in that game. It was loads of fun.
Don't get me wrong, this year a plethora of ridiculously good games (Metroid Prime 3, Zelda: PH, The Orange Box, Bioshock, Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma) but none of them came close to giving me to satisfaction of SMG.
If I owned a 360 I suspect it might've been Mass Effect, given that Yahtzee's review ("KotOR with EVEN MORE TEXT") makes it sound like my perfect game.

Neither the whole of truth nor the whole of good is revealed to any single observer, although each observer gains a partial superiority of insight from the peculiar position in which he stands. It is enough to ask of each of us that he should be faithful to his own opportunities and make the most of his own blessings, without presuming to regulate the rest of the vast field.
My GOTY: Call of Duty 4, hands down. Best multiplayer I have ever played in a gamer, ever. Completely destroys the competition [well, ok, no vehicles] in every way, great single player, fairly balanced [lawl m16+martyrdom] and just a blast to play.
Runner up? The Witcher. Holy shit, what a surprise. RPG based off books I've never heard of, made on the NWN1 engine and as the first game of some company. Surprise surprise, despite it's shortcomings it became quite possibly one of the best RPG's I have ever played. Certainly better then every JRPG I have ever played. Mass Effect? Fun, but way to short. Also don't jump on me and say OH BY HAY SIDE QUESTS EXTEND THE GAME A LOT. Shut the hell up-all the sidequests felt very samey other then a few notable ones, and the notable ones plus the main game only make it about 20-25 hour. The witcher lasted me 50+ hours and I did almost no sidequests at all.
Portal on the other hand is totally familiar in play mechanics...
I know, right? I reach for my handheld portal gun before I reach for my glasses, in the morning. :P
Actually, my GotY is also SMG, followed by Portal. However, unless you were a fan of Narbacular Drop, I don't think you can call Portal's game mechanics "familiar."
For me, I'd say CoD4 as well. I just got it the day after Christmas, but I was GLUED to my 360 until yesterday when Live crapped out. I've never been a fan of FPS on consoles, but I was sucked in.
Runners up: Forza 2 for the DLC that comes out every couple months (thanks to whomever insisted that the FXX ought to be available [though PGR4 had it right out of the box]). Also, GHIII for waking me up to the rhythm game phenomenon.
I'm split between Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn or Metroid Prime 3.
Mario Galaxy and Mass Effect are up there too, but I'm not good enough at platformers to consider SMG a fave, and there are some minor quibbles I had with Mass Effect.
Its like someone taped two ninjas together to make one super ninja!
Or, uh, its rather like someone melded Zelda and Harvest Moon to make a very fun game. I've been working my farm, catching new monsters, clearing dungeons, wooing the ladies, cooking up dishes, forging badass weapons, and making my house more kickass sincethis game has been released and I still go back for more even after beating it 3 or 4 times now.
Honestly if you own a DS and do not have this game then for shame.
Yes!
It made me love Harvest Moon. I'm now a total Natsume shill and I will buy Rune Factory Wii and Rune Factory 2.
Metroid Prime 3 takes the cake though. Absolutely stunning in every respect but most of all gameplay.
Portal on the other hand is totally familiar in play mechanics...

When I said play mechanics, I guess I meant the FPS controls and conventions outside the amazing manipulation of physics. It's a poor generalization for such an insignificant point.
Mass Effect. Or, shit, Crysis with this new Natural mod. It runs so much better than it did with the real-very high settings and it looks fantastic and makes me actually want to use night vision.
Halo 3. I don't care how many cakes are lies or how many kindlys you would like me to do, MC rocks your face off.
Runners up are Portal, Rock Band, and Assassin's Creedence Revival.
I think I'd call this the year where basically EVERYONE wins. Persona 3, uncharted, Mass Effect, Galaxy, The Orange Box, Crysis, World in Conflict, god damn. So much awesome. I haven't played those first two, though, but heard good things.
Virtua Fighter 5 (360 version)
Pure fucking crack.
Assassin's Creed
Prince of Persia: TSOT was easily my favorite game of last-gen, and as flawed as it is, I'm glad to see the spiritual successor turned out better than the two PoP sequels.
Mass Effect
I only played through it once, going through a second time now, but it's...not drawing me in as well as KOTOR did. Nevertheless, a great story, especially since I wasn't really expecting it, great combat, good Achievement design.
God of War II
Got me thirsty for a sequel, and I absolutely loved the set design. The game itself was pure addiction, and the length was just right.
The Orange Box
Never played any of the HL2 games before this. Loved Half-Life 2, thought Ep 1 was kinda lacking, Ep 2 made up for it. Portal was okay, but I personally am not seeing why people go apeshit about it. And TF2 just wasn't for me. Nevertheless, a great value when put together.

Super Mario Galaxy. The game is the very essence of fun and everything is just so creative and whimsical. It's just pure fun from start to finish and has dethroned Super Metroid as my favourite game ever.
I have yet to finish The Witcher, but it didn't suck me in the same way ME did, so unless it suddenly gets really good I'm presuming ME will be my GotY.
Bioshock or Mass Effect. Bioshock had an AMAZING first 80% of the game and had a bigger impact, but Mass Effect was just fun to play through, as I did it twice in a row.
Also, have to mention Orange Box and CoD4. Love playing both online (wel, TF2 from the Box) and Portal was awesome. I find it creepy that I made the exact same Citizen Kane/Monty Python reference when describing Half-Life 2/Portal a couple months ago (although I might have actually said Bioshock/Portal, can't remember now).
Great year for games - I like Mario Galaxy too but to be honest while playing I keep wondering who is online playing CoD4/TF2/etc. It now feels weird to not be "online" with a system for me. With all the problems Live seems to be having, this weekend may be split between Galaxy and Warhawk.
The zombified EDF:2017 thread made me remember how much fun I had with that game this year. Surprised it hasn't been given one of those "Surprisingly great" awards on any website yet.
My favorite singleplayer game of the year would have to be Super Mario Galaxy. It was fun and I had a hard time stopping playing it until I had gotten all the stars. Portal was great, but it was just way too short.
For multiplayer, it's definitely Team Fortress 2, but I'm not really sure whether it's right for me to choose multiplayer game as I have barely played any other new ones. I'd also like to mention that TF2 runs with decent prettyness and playable framerate on my somewhat crap laptop which is a huge plus.
I guess Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and the new Pokémon were good too, but I'm not the kind of person that will keep on playing them after having beaten them.
COD4 for me, Mass Effect isnt out for pc and i dont have a 360
I liked the entire premise of Mass Effect, it just really let me down in alot of places, perhaps its the hype or the slowdown, I can't decide which. But I enjoyed it enough to play it for a bit I suppose.
That said, favourite game of the year would have to be... Call of Duty 4 for its multiplayer, it isn't the Game of the Year for me, but it gave me a shit load of fun.
On that note, is your favourite game necessarily your GOTY?

You could always specify between favorite and best, if you'd like.
Id put Mass effect as my critical GOTY easily, but favourite? Warhawk or Desktop tower defense.
or maybe skate.
see, your 'official' GOTY choice is the game you will recognise in 5 years as great, your 'favourite game im playing right now' game is often a much shallower and sporadic experience. i dont think ill play DTD in 5 years, nor will i play warhawk. or skate for that matter. but i will certainly dig out ME just like i have done with kotor, and baldurs gate and all the classic bioware games. they are in that way timeless and deserve goty over the 'flavour of the month' games.

Can the Orange Box count as a single game? :P

I am a freaking nerd.

Close seconds are Halo 3, Portal, The Darkness, Persona 3 and World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade.

Play on Biohazard map, snipers and stinger miniguns only, with speed freak mutator... It will make your head explode...
SMG is the most fun I've ever had in a game.
The Orange Box is the best value I've ever gotten. I love each game to death, and there's so much.
All runners up.
The real winner: Contra 4. I played my DS like it was a damned home console.
Runners up are Portal, Rock Band, and Assassin's Creedence Revival.
Shamefully, I still haven't played Portal or TF2.
Runners up: Persona 3, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Catan, Puzzle Quest.
Runners-up, in descending order:
Virtua Fighter 5 (360 version)
Pure fucking crack.
Assassin's Creed

Followed by Portal.
Then Mass Effect, COD4, Bioshock and Crackdown.
And Space Giraffe.
Rock Band for 2008.
Mario Galaxy for the Game I Wish I'd Played 2007.
I have yet to finish The Witcher, but it didn't suck me in the same way ME did, so unless it suddenly gets really good I'm presuming ME will be my GotY.

Hear, hear. Probably the only reason I regret selling my Wii.
With honorable mentions going to NHL08 and Portal
