Hey, Custom Special, I'm glad you like the Professor!
When you were little, did you ever have those colouring books that sometimes had a small picture in the corner, with a grid on top of it, then a bigger grid for you to enlarge the small picture? Cos that's how I do it! I print off an A4 image of what I'm painting, measure the image, draw or fold a grid over it, then scale the grid up onto the canvas I'm using, then copy the sections of the grid on the image onto the canvas in pencil, making sure all the edges of the grid shapes match up. After that, it's just painting by numbers, as I copy the colours as closely as I can from the original.
Ok...I think I know what you mean.
Basically divide the original into squares, then increase the size so that the same number of squares fill the canvas? I haven't personally used that kind, but I know exactly to what you refer.
Also, I'm probably going to be painting only an 8x10, so most anything I start with is going to be about the same anyway.
Yep, that's exactly what I meant. I'm going to do a step by step on my blog of Just_Bri_Thanks' pencil sketch.
The key to the grid it to keep the scale exactly right - as I've found out too late once - and sometimes I have to get creative if the ratio won't fit onto the size of canvas I can buy. I usually 40x50 cm, but the shop I used to get the canvases from has closed down. I'm now using Windsor & Newton, Just_Bri_Thanks' canvas is 40 by 56 cm (16"x22") which suits the picture much more than the slightly smaller. On Mirror's Edge, I had to extend the buildings on the top and bottom of the canvas, else I was going to lose some of the sides.
Have fun!

Ok, now I've been stricken with inspiration. I know exactly what I'm going to be doing.
Now the trick is finding a square canvas (5x5, 6x6?) on the cheap (10 to be exact). I can find a few online for a few bucks each, or a pack of 10 for $25, but then they all have stupid shipping costs, which add half again to the price. I think I would pay $25 for a 10 pack, but I don't feel like paying a ton of shipping on top of that.
So, now we're off to the local craft store to see what we can dig up. Here's hoping...
Thanks for the help LPM!
edit: Oh yeah! After you pencil, do you paint black over it (like in the Prof painting in progress)? I think that would work perfect for my project. I just don't want any pencil lines or anything showing through the paint (acrylic).
It depends on the style of the painting - that works for Prof Layton and Okami, but wouldn't work for others. When I do outline, I prefer to use waterproof ink, as I can get much finer lines, and have better control with a pen than with a paintbrush. If I'm not inking, I've learnt i have to rub out the pencil lines before i paint, otherwise, with lighter colours, they show through. Also, I use a putty eraser, as they only remove the graphite, they don't take away the surface of the canvas.
Have you thought about using canvas board at all? Its cheaper than stretched framed canvas, and is really good for practicing on.
I'm doing a very small step-by-step how I paint on my blog, using Just_Bri_Thanks' painting as the example, if you want to have a look.
Here's an update on Just_Bri_thanks' painting - he deserves a medal for patience, and for virtual hugs

What I plan on doing is going to be mostly basic shapes and figures, all black and white, so inking would work perfect and then I could just fill in black where I need it.
Do you use just an ultra fine sharpie sort of marker? Or more of a craft pen? I saw you start with a 2H pencil in your new post.
Oh, and no luck at the craft store. 6x6 frames were $7 for one, or $13 for 4, but I need 10 so the math doesn't work good... The search continues.
edit: found a waterproof archival ink pen in our desk upstairs. LPM, you use something like that? It's a Pigma Micron pen.
I use Uniball Eye Micros, and have several - they are waterproof and fadeproof, and excellent for fine lines. I used a blue one for the fables picture. I'd also like some mediums, as they come in a range of colours, and are about £20.

I stood as close to that same spot as I could manage, and took pictures at in-game time of 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and noon.
And then for good measure I stood one of the characters in about the right spot and posed, and then I logged in the other character elsewhere and posed.
I can't get the second character in that town easily. It would take me all day to get it there and then back. However, you have enough reference material now to get it looking about right.
Again, thanks for your patience with this composite.

Of course English and American branding is different...why can't they just make it easy?
We have Vision (instead of eye), which looks to be about the same, with a different name?
I do like those Uni-ball pens, as well. Very smooth with great lines.
If that's all it is, I may even have one already...time to search!

I looked again, and it is hard to see in the still shots, however; the center piece in the courtyard is a fountain. Water pours down off of each of the three uprights into the raised basin, where it sheets over the edges into the lower basin.

So, I've done some more of the background buildings. I'm happier with the right hand side than i am with the left, so i'm going to have a think about what I need to do. I'm aiming to finish the background tomorrow, and then start the fountain and planters next.
This is a bit of a dark photo, I'll take another in the morning, so you can see it more clearly.
On a separate note, someone has sent me a Canadian$$ cheque for $30, hasn't put their forum name in with the cheque, so i don't know who its off - they've said they have sent the payment a bit late. If that's you, could you please PM me? - I delete everyone's IRL name and address as soon as i've posted their picture - silly me!
Thank you!

If I get chance tomorrow, I'll do some more, but I have 10, maybe 11 for dinner, so I might not get time to, it all depends when I wake up - I was painting by 7:30 am this morning, so maybe I'll dothe same tomorrow.

Hi folks, back again at last - I'm still off work ill, mum is back here with us cos she's still ill, but I've got a bit of painting done, so here's FFXI with the background nearly finished - I've still to do the fountains and the outline of the stone flags, but I'm nearly ready to paint the avatars:
A really funny thing happened last week - someone on a Professor Layton site found an image of my last Layton painting, and linked it on Tumblr - hits went crazy, it was quite strange to see it on lots of different blogs - it was a part-done image, as well, not even a finished picture!
Anyway, I've some time tomorrow to paint a bit more - I plan on completely finishing the background, then making a start on the avatars.

Well, I've nearly finished Just_Bri_Thanks, picture, I'll post another image tomorrow.
I got distracted by a request for a couple of postcard sized images for a charity event my friend Josh is running, in Cardiff. Its for a charity called World Bicycle Relief, so I tried to buy some canvas board the right size, couldn't, so bought A5 and cut it in half. Here they are:
I have a slight problem about who to paint for next, as when I've searched for Kevar (who is next on the list)on the forum members list, they don't seem to exist - I can't find any posts, or even their name, so unless someone tells me differently, I'm going to move on to the next person. Well, I would, except for some strange reason, I just have them as Waiting to Hear. I thought that was their forum name, but there's no-one called that here. Clearly, I've stuffed up somehow. I'm going to check through the early pages of the thread, but if I can't find contact details for either of them, Bobcesca, you're next! I don't know what you want me to paint, so get thinking!

If you're still accepting people for the queue, I'd like to be added, please. I've been posting on this forum for a ridiculously long time so short of sudden death I'll probably still be around in 2010.
This thread is amazing, by the by.
But he hasn't been active on the boards since December 2008. Given his statement above...
The next sign-up post I see in the thread was from BobCesca in post 379; no sign of whoever might have been between them, at least in the thread.
Edit: Other oddities I noticed from before you froze the list (post 504): Malkor signed up just before I did, but he wasn't added to the list.
I forgot to say - Custom Special was very sneaky - he was my Santa in the G&T Secret Santa, and he painted me a beautiful World of Goo!
So, here's the FF XI almost done - couldn't get the faces right, so I've overpainted them and will try again. I've had to use my phone for these pictures, so they're not as clear as they could be.
Grrr, can't get imageshack to work, so its back to plixi via twitter!
I'm not on AIM, and don't really want to sign up to it, so if anyone else uses it, could they please try to track down Kevar for me? His user name is Terminally Kevar. Thank you.
I'm going to move on to Bobcesca next, as Just_Bri_Thanks painting is almost finished.
