Blades of Steel, i had so many great memories with that game. Our players would fight i would win it then score and my friend would whip the SNES controller at the TV. Great times.

Haven't read the whole thread but...

There was this little (maybe not so little, it came outta nowhere for me) strategy game called JTF. I thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of it. I thought it was so cool, I'd play every stage and celar the map. To me, it is still more fun the World in Conflict in single player.

I think it was pretty much panned as an average game, and I don't know what it was, but it had the right combo of units and a fun story. Best of all, you didn't mass produce tanks or anything ridiculous like that. Each unit was something you TRIED to keep alive through the stage.

Anyway, I see it around 10 bucks or so, and if you like strategy games, give it a shot.

I want to add WiC to this thread. It wasn't exactly pooh-poohed by reviewers, but it really is pretty much nearly all ignored by everyone. What the hell?! It's fantastic I think, and yet nobody talks about it. Hell, DoW's latest EP got more press coverage it seems.

Illusions of Gaia may have not been a poorly reviewed game but I think I'm the only one who's played through all of Terranigma and still like Gaia more.

Soul Blazer was also pretty meh for me. It got better near the end but at that point that game play was getting a bit redundant. Good thing the game doesn't overstay its welcome.

Oh, I totally agree. Gaia is a better game than Terranigma.

The only reason people go so nuts over Terranigma is that we in America have been denied it. It's the Final Fantasy 5 syndrome.

    Whoa, stop there.

Terranigma is largely considered the better game because, technically, and gameplay wise, it is the refinement of what came before it. I think its a great game because it is a great game, not because I was denied it - I'm in PAL land (christ, imagine if that attitude held true - D:). So lets not go claiming it has some false adulation simply because it didn't make it into one region, that's a ridiculous generalisation and a poor way of justifying your opinion of the game.

If Terranigma had made it stateside it would today be regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time. FACT.

    It's just that good.

I can't really think of anything besides FF8. I loved that game so much, though so many people seemed to hate it. The monster level up was kinda stupid, but you can get past it by using card on everything for no exp, and then turn cards into magic to get stronger. Did people not realize this?

This one time i read a review for Deus Ex that gave it 6/10.

    honest to god.

i dont know which magazine but i have a vague sense it was one of those PC Hardware magazines that reviews 2-3 games somewhere in the back each issue.

Oh, it's not that Terranigma's a bad game. Far from it. It's fantastic.
Illusion of Gaia is just better.

I drowned my sorrows in Illusion of Gaia. It was one of the very few games that kept me playing it all day (i.e. more than 5 hours at a stretch).

Didn't like Soul Blazer in the least. Disappointing.

Looking back, the game is absolutely atrocious, but I played that game to death when I got my PSX near-launch. I think I played it even more than Tekken 1. Still remember the horrible opening - "Eight traveling fighters..."

I had one of the remakes on the Saturn. First game I played that had full voice acting.

That reminds me of this Fire Emblem esque game on the SNES called GemFire. None of my friends liked it, but I played the hell out of that game.

Parasite Eve--The previous points show what I felt about the game. I REALLY loved but even more than that I l LOVED.....
PARASITE EVE 2!!!--Parasite Eve 2 is for some reason one of my 10 favorite games ever. I got 100 percent completion on killing all the monsters. I actually sold it along with all my other PS1 games for really good money on ebay a year or two ago. PE2 is the only one I went back and re-bought off someone else later.

Final Fantasy X-2--Yeah I'm one of those 'weirdos' who plays more of the modern Final Fantasy games. I didn't play the originals when I was a kid because I wasn't very good at video games as a younger child. I went back and played the older ones and didn't really like them. This game was fun to me because of how much I liked the characters from 10. Yes I do think they were fleshed out because in the modern games stories can be told so much better because you can do full-fledged cut scenes, scored music, voice acting, facial expressions. Not really possible on the older ones so I just prefer the modern ones. I'd say X-2 is just behind X & VIII as my favorite RPGs.

One Piece: Unlimited Adventure --I'm almost certain its getting bad reviews because its a licensed game but I love me some One Piece.

Man what the hell, the average score of 69% on gamerankings is a damn lie. It's a perfectly good adventure game with some kick ass boss battles. The amount of stuff you have to collect is kind of annoying at times (fucking burning trees) and some stuff could be more intuitive (I spent way too long figuring out how to break the walls in the caves) but it's still a solid game. Fans of the series at least owe it a rental for the boss fights.

I really enjoyed Samurai Western (Metacritic = 58) and Samurai Champloo (Metacritic = 66) on the PS2. I loves me some genre bending themes with solid/unique gameplay.

Also not below 69, but I played Genji (Metacritic = 74) to full completion. 100%. I did everything. I loved that game.

Yes, I love samurai shit, my Onimusha collection could blot out the sun (so I could hack and slash in the shade).

Soulblazer on the SNES. God I love that game, kick ass music and gameplay not to mention an excellent story to boot.

As far as i recall it was well recieved by critics but I don't think it hit the status that actraiser got. Guess you could call it a sleeper hit. Still one of the must haves for any SNES library.

I'm not sure if it even got any review time but the one game me and a friend of mine got really into is Catan. It's probably the mist fun I've ever had trading Wheat for Bricks.

Definitely not something the critics hated. Catan is one of the most successful boardgames I know of, if you don't count the likes of Candyland and Risk.

Why does everyone keep on listing things that are the opposite of what this thread is about?

Because seriously, all I see is people listing games they love that critics also loved. I mean what's the point? :S

Ground Zero: Texas, for Sega CD. I'm pretty sure all the critics panned it.

Look it up. Look at some screens, it looks grainy as shit. But damn if it wasn't one of my favorite shooters of that era. I happen to love a good live-action shooter, like the Mad Dog Mcree games, and I really liked this one. The acting was actually pretty decent for a live-action game, the story was ok, and even though you controlled your crosshairs with the controller, it ended up feeling pretty responsive. I must have rented this game like 5 times. I even hauled the entire system over to my buddy's house a couple times so he could play this with me. Awesome.
