i think it may be a context thing

in the sense that Miyazaki's stuff is atypical of shit you see in anime

    That's pretty damn awesome.

I've never seen that before. I like it.

I also think that Hayao Miyazaki's work is not really anime, and he doesn't think of it as that either.

Yeah, or you can just call it anime if you don't want to sound like a douche bag.

Yeah... his work is kind of unique. His portfolio is loaded with amazing films unlike anything else out there.

Not all of Ghibli's quality work is done by him, though. Such as this little treasure.

I honestly don't understand why you would say Miyazaki's stuff isn't anime. Ghibli isn't the only source of Japanese animated productions that don't feature schoolgirls or giant robots or collectible monsters. It's like saying that you don't consider a movie made in India to be Bollywood because you think it is way better than most Indian films. Anime is animation from Japan, and just because you don't like most of what you have seen of it doesn't mean you can excise Miyazaki's work from it as an excuse to continue being prejudiced against the rest of the stuff Japan puts out.

Man Castle of Cagliostro is pretty awesome.

My Neighbor Totoro is the ultimate feel-good movie, though.
