Here are a few basic computer ground rules. First: When in doubt, restart! If your copy of Audiosurf is acting the fool (saying you have the demo when you've payed for the full version, for example), restart Steam and try again before you come into the thread with a question that's been asked 40 times. Which leads into the second rule: RTFT -- Read the flipping thread. There's a good chance someone's asked it already, if not then you'll be adding something to the discussion, and everyone will like you more.

From Steam:
Updates to Audiosurf have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Audiosurf

* Added separate volume controls for menu music, game music, and sound effects
* Added new Mono Pro vehicle with jump fins (was in previous update)
* Play Double Vision with X360 controller and Mouse (or X360 controller only)
* Added "resend score" button in the event of a timeout
* Increased score submitting timeout duration to 22 seconds
* "Sharp corners" tweak now applies to ironmode only
* Added photosensitive seizure warning
* Added crypt.dll to the engine folder (bugfix)
* Fixed Butter Ninja exploit
* Fixed stone block exploit
* Increased rendering speed of achievements panel
* Typo corrections
* Expanded Audiosurf Radio browser to 9 song maximum
* Options: "X" replaced with "OK"
* Options: custom color sliders now have a color (r/g/b)
* Fixed various missing text problems with newer ATI drivers
* Fixed "Recently Played Songs" not saving between game sessions

Also, someone has set up a website specifically for Audiosurf videos. audiosurfboard.com. Register, and then you can post videos and vote on other people's videos.

Audiosurf is sold via Valve's Steam, for a price of $9.95USD. It's bundled with the complete Orange Box soundtrack, and will have full support for Achievements. A new demo will be released at the same time.

Demo on Steam.

Alright, for those who haven't played it before:

WebsiteShot1_400.jpg

Audiosurf is a music puzzle game that could be described as part Guitar Hero, part KLAX and maybe part racing game. The game lets you load up (almost) any song on your computer, or from a CD and then play through a course created from that song. When the song goes fast, the track you run on will dip and you'll speed up, when the song is mellow the track will slope gently upward and you'll go slowly. The track will also bump along to the beat, and in some cases (nobody seems exactly sure which) the track will twist and writh, making in very hard to hit or avoid blocks.

Audiosurf_IGF_Screenshot1_600.jpg

And hitting or avoiding blocks is what the game is about. During the song you speed down the track in control of one of the games many "cars," each of which has different abilities and goals. You'll be tasked with either hitting and collecting coloured blocks (the different colours mean different points, red and yellow are worth more and come at the more "intense" moments of a song, softer colours like blue and purple are worth less, but are more common), which will pile up in 3 vertical columns. Once you group 3 or more blocks of the same colour they'll disappear and you'll get points. If you overfill a column then you'll be penalized by losing points, and, in harder difficulties, you'll be forced to wait as a ghost while you respawn, passing up valuable blocks and power-ups all the while.

Audiosurf_IGF_Screenshot2_600.jpg

The other major mode of play is Mono, in which there are only 2 colours of blocks. You must avoid all grey blocks and hit every other. Consecutive hits of coloured blocks gives more points, hitting greys forces you to clear them out and lose points. A lot of people prefer Mono, but I don't really like it.

Other than that, there's a lot going on. Power-ups of various types and special bonuses you can receive after the song is over for ending with a clear board or collecting a certain percentage of red or yellow blocks, etc.

And every song has an internet scoreboard, so you can compete for the best scores on all your favourites.

Here are a few gameplay videos on Youtube: One. Two. Me.

    Well, I got back. As of a few seconds ago mine was still working. I've played 4 or 5 songs so for, so we'll see. I also found a download link.

    Here. Download.

    If anyone else can get back about how it's working it'd be great. I have to go cook dinner now.

    I've been playing the beta one (1.11.08) since it's release and it's really one of the best things to happen to my MP3s since my ipod.

    slow music goes UPHILL
    intense music makes DOWNWARD spirals and slopes
    puzzles mixed with racing mixed with awesome.

    do NOT play breakbeats, or aphex twin. you will hurl.

    muse, mogwai and daft punk are particularly luscious choices.

    Strange...didn't work before the free update (beta! it said), and now it does.

    Only it's changed up some fonts, added more visual effects, greyed out anything but pusher in medium and ninja mono on hard (which is just as well). Also, it seems to have disabled jumping on Ninja Mono, which is odd given that it still says "press spacebar to jump."

    Aside from that, still seems to work, scoreboards and all.

    I've played about 5 songs after the update...curious to see if it keeps playing.

    If memory serves, the others have to be "unlocked" somehow (probably just by playing enough songs). That's how it was the first time I loaded up the game, during the last beta weekend. I assume that everything just got un-unlocked for some reason.

    Yeah, I noticed that too. Fortunately, it's just a typo -- you can still jump, but it's left click now.

    Just run the game. It should update itself. If it doesn't then be sure to post. Maybe it's just that download, and maybe it will only work for people who already have it (unlikely, but you never know).

    It looked like they were going to only let you play the preselected songs on the demo. I'm glad they decided to restrict characters instead. People probably wouldn't get the point of it without their own music.

    It seems to let you play more songs if you are willing to exit and restart the game. It will let you play one song each time. I guess it is a hassle-ware type thing (or a programming mistake).

    Man, i didn't get to try this during the last beta. It's works WAY better than I expected. I love the look, it plays very smoothly. I started out with some Ratatat, moved on to some Bob Dylan (I expected this one to throw it for a loop, but no.) and then went to some Room On Fire era Strokes. That's all I got to play before I had to quit.

    I will pay for this if they release the damn thing. Fuck, I'd pay in advance if it meant I got to mess around with the Beta in the interim.
