After some time, you start to create buildings and train your guys so they can fight your enemies. If you're far enough evolved, you can start to fly to other planets and even galaxies with your own little UFO and civilize them.
Just weeks? Shit, if Spore ends up half as good as I expect it to be, it will be like Oblivion then. Something you sink 20 hours into realise your character sucks and go, fuck this I'm not playing this game again.

One of my other friends loves it though, he's got a 100+ hour character. And his character is for the 360.
I'm not surprised. I just find vanilla Oblivion rather blah. Whenever I would make a new character, I would always do the Arena First, then Thieves, then Brotherhood, then- blah, got tired of it.
Right now though, I have loaded up the FCOM overhaul mods and am playing as a robed defensive caster.
It's quite cool how the game actually feels really different in it's mechanics with a decision like that, and the mods really help with some of the AI and mixed up monster spawn tables and stuff. Like for example, when you have a minotaur charging you at Level 1... you actually run from that fight!
What mods make Oblivion better? I actually liked Vanilla okay, but that's because I played a dumb fucking Nord that smashed people in the face.
I got OOO downloaded, it looks like it does a lot. Can I play a caster or sneaky-type well with just that?
OOO being good is a huge matter of taste.
For every good thing it does (like adding new weapons and limiting the levelled equipment for some enemies), it does another retarded thing to balance it out. Like making the traditional first dungeon a freaking deathtrap for new characters, and adding new NPC's and monsters that are quite literally almost unkillable no matter what level you are.
Fortunately, it's modular so you can take some things and leave others out, but if you want the new weapon meches without running the risk of being ambushed by a squad of retardedly powerful uber amazons with equally uber gear, you're out of luck.
