I need a new bag to carry all of my stuff around at PAX. Any suggestions on what would be a good one? I do not have a laptop but do have smaller portable electronics that I would be carrying.
But in all seriousness, one of these would probably be good, if a little pricey.
Wow, I was thinking that 100oz of water would be way too much to be carrying around at PAX but then it dawned on me that I could fill that thing up with 100oz of beer!

Not at PAX, you can't. You don't want to end up like Ed Fleming. Besides, there's no alcohol on PAX premises. Save it for the afterparties.
last year I bought a Camelback for PAX, not for the water, but for the easy access to bawls. Imagine my disappointment when I found out bawls was overpriced ><. They don't have too much extra storage, but last year some booths were handing out carrying bags anyways. I was pretty happy that I could fit all of my sag into 2 of their bags.
I just picked up a Crumpler bag to hold my laptop, dslr, and miscellaneous gaming gear. So far I love it, its very comfortable and I can barely feel being weighed down while wearing it. If need be I can remove the compartment that holds my dslr and make more room for swag. There are plenty of other bags in there website that target other purposes too like messenger bags, school bags too.
Oh yeah they are really spendy too but for the safety of the equipment and the comfort it was well worth it.

I made the mistake of getting a messenger bag last year, after people recommended one. It hurt my back.
I'll probably get a backpack for this year.
You're doing it wrong. :P
I had a messenger bag last year and it was perfect. It never got in the way and it was great for transporting swag. Granted, I wasn't carrying it around with me all the time. But the half-mile walk to the WSCTC in the mornings would have made my back hurt if it was going to happen.

Went with this one here, http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/bags/890b/. I'm thinking of going back to school as well so I figured a decent bag would be worth the money. My Jansport backpack from high school (10 years ago!?) is pretty worn out.
Also picked this up with the electrical outlet shortage that will no doubt be in effect with 4+ people in a hotel room for PAX, all tryin to charge our various electronics each night. http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/77e6/

Ooo, fancy! I like it, but if only I could try it on and see how it looks on me. :-(
I bring my camel back to PAX with me just because with so much walking around I end up getting thirsty pretty fast and unable to find a drinking fountain. Plus its just the right size to put my things in.
I tried to look up the messenger bag I bought a few years ago, because it's been durable as hell, was pretty cheap, and holds a lot of junk. I couldn't find it online, but while I was searching I ran into this:
I don't know how good of a vendor e-bags is, but it seems like a good "large textbook" (even a bit larger) sized messenger bag, and at 20 bucks it's pretty cheap. No idea on the quality of it, but it just goes to show there's some really cheap messenger bags out there. God knows how long it'll last, but it at least claims to have a 10 year warranty...?
If people can't find something cheap and decent in their own area, I'd recommend taking a look at the Packs section that Mountain Equipment Co-Op has on offer. There's a bunch of options varying from nylon shopping bags to shoulder bag carry-alls, to heavyduty hiking packs. I picked up one of my main backpacks from MEC before heading to PAX'06, the MEC Brio Crag Daypack for $40CDN. It's easily to compact down, and feels relatively light on my pack even when it's stuffed full. Aside from a military ALICE pack, this MEC bag is the most durable I've ever had. My only downside is that isn't quite wide enough for my beast of a laptop, but I've got a separate case for that. A lot of their smaller bags would likely serve quite well for PAX goers.
A number of their bags are kind of expensive, but there's also a lot of good cheap ones too-- and they're really well put together as well. I usually suggest MEC to people looking for something that they're sure to get their money out of.

Anyways, just food for thought.
Just thought I'd add that I've bought bags from EBags in the past, and found them great. I have a few different ones from their site and they were all pretty good quality.
I have a Considerable Embarrassment from Crumpler and it's awesome. Thousands of pockets, loads of space. Best messenger bag style laptop bag I've ever seen.
That company has the strangest names for bags I've ever seen... and the descriptions on their site are even more insane... but it looks like a nice bag!
Would my ALICE pack would be over kill? It's nifty because it has a camel pack bladder attachment.
Overkill? Nah. It'd be awesome, as long as you're okay with carrying it all day long.

they are a little pricey, but they make the most comfortable messenger bag i've ever had..and i've gone through plenty as a courier.....even compared to the timbuk2 (i returned my timbuk2 one week after getting it...it was so uncomfortable on my back.) www.chromebags.com i've got the Citizen
seriously...i love it....it feels like a backpack even though it is a hardcore messenger bag!.......i'll be bringing mine to stuff with fun.

Carrying it around is the easy part because no matter how heavy it is the frame takes most of the weight off. I'm just worried about using it in crowds because it's huuuuuge when it's filled to capacity.
Last year, I bought a Walmart backpack to throw snacks and my stuff in (someone told me there were usually vendor bags to stuff swag into). Five minutes into PAX, the shoulder strap broke at the bottom seam :-( I ended up bending the crap out of my only Sam & Max button to patch it together :-(
This time . . . probably get a decent backpack early on. I could use a good day hiking pack.
Last year at Comic-Con they gave out these huge 3ft x 3ft Smallville bags, which are awesome for carrying around random shit. The bag's almost as big as me. :P
Messenger bag is easier to put stuff in, backpack is easier to carry imo.
To elaborate. Messenger bags have easy access but the weight distribution might put a strain on the shoulder it is strapped over. But that is just dependent on how much weight you plan on carrying around.
Backpacks have horrible access since well its in your back but if you have a really good backpack you will barely know its there. Again depending on how much you plan on carrying.
Right now my new crumpler backpack has; laptop, books, cords, dslr, 3 lenses, ds, and accessories and barely even feel the weight. But its such a pain to get things in and out of there.

I guess the workaround for lack of backpack access would be to wear it on the front instead of the back? Though that looks a bit silly, admittedly.
I wonder if anyone has ever attempted to create a hybrid of the two... one that saddles on the side, but distributes the weight evenly. I guess it'd be like a messenger bag with two straps...? Not sure.

I thought that was the purpose of those strange pod shaped backpack things... they sat like a backpack but they slung like a messenger bag.
Ah, I haven't seen one of those. Do you have a link to one? I'd be interested to see such a thing. Because indeed, the weight distribution is the only thing that really annoys me about messenger bags.

It's very good quality stuff, but yeah....it's pretty expensive.
Their normal messenger bags aren't bad though. $70 for a huge bag that is probably never going to rip open on you and looks pretty sweet.

There's also the infinitely-stylish fanny pack.

The bags he's talking about seem to be here: http://www.crumplerbags.com/Cart/index.php?catId=5 The "Considerable Embarrassment" bag's description is... well... R rated. lol
