The size of the bag to me depends on how many runs back to the hotel you want to make each day. If you don't really plan on going back too often, go with a nice big backpack, otherwise a normal backpack should do nicely.
Get a spot at BYOC and just park a laptop there if you can't bring your desktop.
I've heard a lot of people say that... This is my first time. Is the BYOC area really that secure for swag storage?
Ryan
Technically theres nothing secure about it no.
That being said I left all KINDS of swag at my byoc spot. Swag is pretty plentiful and not really worth the risk to bother stealing it for the most part. Also, only people with BYOC badges are allowed in there so it narrows down the crowd of people around your stuff by a LOT, not to mention the guy who sits next to/across from you is likely to notice that "Hey waaaait.... thats not the guy who sits there digging in that bag".
Also BigRed is at the door. No one is that effing stupid to steal things with him around. The man is a MOUNTIAN.

Brilliant. Thank you.

If I had talent, I wouldn't need all this money.

I'd like to point out that a lot of the 'swag' being given away, is not much more than a promotional cardboard handout in many instances. There's a lot of shirts and other goodness available, but unless you hound every booth in the expo hall all weekend, there's no mountain of swag to be had.
I've got an ALICE pack as well, but I haven't decided if it will be my weekend utility bag & swag carrier yet.
Got a Crumpler Dark Side today, which I'll be bringing.
I hounded every booth last year (although it was more like walking around all day and somehow arriving at the right booth at the right time) and got a ton of shirts. It's not just hounding, it's got a lot to do with luck.
I did just fine with a small backpack with the single strap across the chest. It was just the right size for a water bottle, cell phone, DS, pad of paper/pens, and assorted swag. You really don't want to go too crazy with a huge monstrous bag, or you'll be bonking into people all day and probably carrying more than you need. If you end up buying a crate of Bawls or 10 shirts, just take the hike back to your hotel room instead of hauling it around. Why carry two litres of water when you can just carry a 750 ml bottle and refill it from time to time?

Maybe he can mod it to turn it into an oversized messenger bag (graft on longer straps and maybe some cushioned supports where it meets the shoulder). That'd be pretty neat.

The Ogio Hip Hop I have seems to be fairly comfortable. Technically, the volume capacity listed is greater than the Crumpler Considerable Embarassment as well. Though, the shape and flexibility of that space is kind of one of the key factors if you're shopping around, I suppose. You can even get a Halo 3 version of it from the Bungie Store. I, uh, have the Halo 3 one. I find it to be all right, and it does fit the game-related theme. Of the 3 Ogio bags I've had, none have suffered any damage due to design flaw or misrepresnted capacity.
I own one of these right now, but I've been looking at trying to get something smaller to carry around with me. I mean, the full size is great for trips, and when I was still in school and stuff, but I don't think the amount of stuff I'm going to be carrying around will warrant a regular sized messenger.
Ya know, I was just thinking about how awful my current bag was yesterday. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
The Ogio bags look comfortable and robust but kinda bulky.
Timbuk2 bags look comfortable, semi-compact, lots of pockets/compartments, but --yowza-- the price.
Any more critique and suggestions you guys can provide would be great!
I picked up one of these from the Apple Store. Pricy, yes, but it has easier accessibility than a backpack, it's more comfortable (for me) than a messenger bag, and the laptop pouch is so very, very nice. They say it holds up to the 17+" MacBook Pros, but my regular MacBook is quite well-protected inside.

I found a way to get a Timbuk2 bag at a resonable price.
Check out the REI-OUTLET clearance warehouse and search for Timbuk2.
If you're a member, they have 20% off sales every so often. They say it won't work for the outlet store, but it does. So I got a Timbuk2 bag for $55.
If you have it sent to one of their stores for pickup, shipping is free.
Through some sort of miracle coincidence one of the 2 REIs in PA is right outside the city. Those clearance prices are ridiculously low.
